. News from the districts.
VANCOUVER ISLAND & GULF ISLANDS NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 2004
The weather might make us feel like summer is over but I am sure the sun will
be out soon and all our dreariness will disappear again.
We have had a busy summer with different events in the District taking place.
In late June there was a Mid Island luncheon in Nanaimo. A BBQ was held in
Qualicum Beach in late July and a picnic in Victoria in mid August. We also had
a very successful golf tournament in August at the Arrowsmith Golf Course. Now
it is time to start our Fall events.
The following are planned for the next couple of months before we get into the
Christmas socials:
September 30th - Comox Valley Monthly Luncheon
Salmon Point Restaurant contact Eric van der Holt  250-897-0322
September
Victoria Area Koffee Klatches

Time: 9:30AM
The Victoria Area Koffee Klatch has changed to: Breakwater Cafe, 9851 Seaport
Place (At the foot of Beacon Avenue), Sidney, B. C.

LATER THAN OCTOBER 1ST. We have a limit of
approximately 60 people.

October 13th - Nanaimo Area Koffee Klatch
ABC Country Restaurant
809 Trans Canada Highway
Nanaimo
10:00 AM
All Pionairs welcome. Contact Terry Baker  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The Luncheon in Duncan will be the first time in quite awhile that we will
gather together
as one group. Therefore it would be nice to see a strong turnout. It is
regretful that a larger place could not be found at a Central location and also
not knowing how many would turn out for such an affair, but we will experiment
this time and adjust accordingly for the next one.
Elisabeth and I will be attending the Semi-Annual Directors Meeting in Niagara
Falls on October 14th. If there is anything that you would like brought up at
this meeting please drop me a note or E-Mail. I will try to have your problem
brought before the session for discussion. This Meeting will be the start of
the preparation for the Annual General Meeting to be held in Niagara Falls on
May 17, 18 and 19, 2005. This will be a wonderful place for our AGM and also a
great vacation site for you to spend before and/or after the Sessions. Think
about it.
Continue to have a nice Summer and a pleasant Fall, we look forward to seeing
you at our get-togethers
Harold Thomas, District Director

Star Alliance News:
Lufthansa looking to replace the Boeing 737. Lufthansa announced that it plans
to choose a replacement for its fleet of Boeing 737 short-haul aircraft in the
next two years. The carrier has not yet decided to what extent or how quickly
it will replace the aircraft. The carrier currently has 33 Boeing 737-300s and
25 Boeing 737-500s. The cost of replacing the entire 737 fleet could reach
approximately $3 billion US, based on list prices. The airline plans to talk
with both Boeing and rival Airbus.

. Remember when.
Laker Airways Skytrain by Freddie Laker, arguably the world's first low
cost airline. Started in September 26th, 1977 when a DC10-30 reg G-AZZC
'Eastern Belle' left Gatwick UK for New York US. Fare was gbp59.00 from Gatwick
and us$135 from New York. One flight a day in each direction.

The DC-3 was known as the DAKOTA or DAK, the initials standing for Douglas
Aircraft KOmpany Transport Aircraft.

. Found on the internet.
More than 62 years after it crashed in a swamp, a Spitfire is back on
display. The cockpit of the plane, a Battle of Britain participant, was
shown off at Hooton Park airfield, in Britain, on the weekend. It took
four years to recover and restore the cockpit of the plane, which was
originally based at the same airfield during the Second World War…

. Terry's travel tips.
While visiting either London Heathrow or Gatwick airport and feel peckish, try
a meal at the Wetherspoon airport pubs -  on production of a staff ID you could
get 20% off all food and drink.

. Smilies.
Vesta supplied us with these -

What is the similarity between air traffic controllers and pilots?
If a pilot screws up, the pilot dies;
If ATC screws up, ....the pilot dies.
--------------------------------------------------------
Never trade luck for skill.
--------------------------------------------------
The three most common expressions (or famous last words) in aviation are:
"Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Shit!"
------------------------------------------------------------
Weather forecasts are horoscopes with numbers.
-------------------------------------------------------
Progress in airline flying:
now a flight attendant can get a pilot pregnant.
-------------------------------------------------------
Airspeed, altitude and brains.
Two are always needed to successfully complete the flight.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A smooth landing is mostly luck; two in a row is all luck;
three in a row is prevarication.
-------------------------------------------------------
I remember when sex was safe and flying was dangerous.
----------------------------------------------------------
Mankind has a perfect record in aviation; we never left one up there!
------------------------------------------------------------
Flashlights are tubular metal containers kept in a flight
bag for the purpose of storing dead batteries
--------------------------------------------------------
Flying the airplane is more important than radioing your
plight to a person on the ground incapable of understanding
or doing anything about it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
When a flight is proceeding incredibly well, something was
forgotten. Just remember, if you crash because of weather, your
funeral will be held on a sunny day.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Advice given to RAF pilots during W.W.II:
When a prang (crash) seems inevitable, endeavour to strike the softest,
cheapest object in the vicinity as slow and gently as possible.
-------------------------------------------------------
The Piper Cub (substitute Colt, Wilsie) is the safest
airplane in the world; ...it can just barely kill you.
(Attributed to Max Stanley, Northrop test pilot)
---------------------------------------------------------
A pilot who doesn't have any fear probably
isn't flying his plane to its maximum.
(Jon McBride, astronaut)
----------------------------------------------------------
If you're faced with a forced landing,
fly the thing as far into the crash as possible.
(Bob Hoover - renowned aerobatic and test pilot)
