Air Canada’s fleet begins its transformation. Just over a week ago, the
Toronto Paint Shop finished applying the new paint scheme to Air Canada
A340, FIN 906. The new livery has the Air Canada Maple Leaf complemented by
a light green graphic dot pattern dubbed the “Frosted Leaf.” The paint job
takes anywhere from seven to 11 days, depending on the aircraft type. To
date, three aircraft don the new colours: FINs 652, 639 (B767s) and 906.
Next in line for ‘make-overs’ are FINs 902 and 905.

Help!
I'm an AC retiree who is now on oxygen 24/7 and I'm concerned about losing
most of my travel privileges (including C1/J10's) because in order to have
AC provide oxygen, I must travel on a confirmed basis.
I realize that AC charges $100/each way for provision of same but wonder
how other retirees handle the situation from home, through check-in,
security, the gate, to the flight and at destination, from the flight,
through the terminal, via taxi to a hotel. Friends or relatives could
possibly be imposed upon at home but in most cases are not available at
destination. I would appreciate suggestions or hints from anyone with

. Did you hear about the very successful YXY CP/AC reunion in September
2003?
The first ever YXYCP Reunion was held at the Bayside Inn, Parksville, BC,
from September 26th to 28th, 2003. The weather was cooperative and the
weekend was hot and sunny. There were 70 attendees from Whitehorse,
Toronto, Calgary, Kelowna, Vernon, Vancouver, Coquitlam, Langley, Surrey,
Richmond, Saltspring Island, Lantzville, Duncan, Powell River and Victoria
made up of former and current passenger agents, management, maintenance
staff, owners of the Taku Hotel and pilots and flight attendants who flew
the Whitehorse route.
The fun weekend began with a wine and cheese registration party on Friday
night, with pilot George Serviss, doing a fly-by in his home built
aircraft. On Saturday, guests participated in golf at Qualicum and two
three-hour Zodiac tour adventures out into Georgia Strait and around the
islands. George and Henry Ilg did two more fly-bys in close formation later
that afternoon with Henry’s passengers, Jake Alexander and Dave McIntyre
grinning from ear to ear. Henry Ilg's wife, Ruth, riding with Serviss, had
an even bigger thrill as George performed several acrobatic maneuvers.
Saturday evening started off with a cocktail party in the banquet room
decorated with flags and banners generously donated by the City of
Whitehorse. In keeping with the theme, the place mats at each table were
copies of the Canadian Airlines DC 3 poster put out by CP Air in the 1980s.
On display around the room were pictures, albums, newspaper articles,
posters, and CP Air Pilot uniforms. There was also an 8mm film of
Whitehorse in the early days, provided by Dennis Baxendale, and Power Point
slide shows by Phil Kelsey and Rich Carret, displaying photographs of
Whitehorse and staff in the 1970’s.
As each person arrived, they were given a gift bag containing several Yukon
pins, a CD about Whitehorse and a very orange, collectable CP Air bottle
opener. After the cocktail party came dinner, then dancing. The buffet put
on by the hotel was delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner.
After dinner there were several prizes given out, then a speech written by
Rex Terpening was read. Rex, who we were honoured to have at the reunion,
was a pioneer in airline maintenance and has been in the aviation industry
since the 1930s. A long time Yukoner, his speech was a highlight of the
evening. He and his wife Trudie received an emotional standing ovation.
After that, Marlie Kelsey, Don McWilliam and Tony Buckley spoke about their
different memories of Whitehorse. When the speeches were over there was
photo-taking, dancing and visiting until 01:00.
The next day, many people met in the morning and had breakfast together
before they reluctantly went their separate ways. Most noticeable
throughout the reunion were the many smiles and genuine pleasure that
everyone had in being together. Some people had not seen each other in more
than 20 years. There’s definitely going to be another, probably in two
years time(?) ... and rumour has it that George “Boogie” Brown is going to
organize it. For all those who couldn't make it this time, we missed you
and hope that you can join us at the next one.

Canadian Affair is to launch new direct Gatwick - Quebec City service
with a weekly flight from May 2005. This will be the first direct,
non-stop, low-cost flight on this route. Equipment will be a B767-200
chartered from Thomas Cook Airlines.

30 years later, Ottawa unveils plan for Pickering airport
TORONTO - The Greater Toronto Airports Authority released a draft plan
Tuesday to build a $2 billion airport on land expropriated by Ottawa more
than 30 years ago, for just that purpose.
The airport will be built in stages over a 30-year period and may
eventually handle 11 million passengers a year.
Protesters against the building of an airport in their community.
The airport authority said the facility would be located north of the town
of Pickering, just east of Toronto, and would generate $5 billion a year.
Money for the airport would be raised privately through bonds and the
securities market, said Steve Shaw, vice-president of the airport authority.
He said the new regional airport would take pressure off Toronto's Pearson
International Airport, which generates annual traffic of about 50 million
passengers per year.
"Pearson will always be the major international facility, but clearly there
is a need for regional facilities," Shaw said. "General aviation needs to
be accommodated. Pearson cannot handle that."
Among the general aviation traffic handled by the new airport would be
recreational and company aircraft, including helicopters, and flying schools.
Ottawa has been gathering land
The federal government started expropriating land for a second
international airport for Toronto more than three decades ago.
It abandoned a Pickering airport project in 1972 after public opposition
and a withdrawal of provincial government support.
Some people who live in the area oppose the new plan. Stephen Frederick,
president of Voters Organized to Cancel Airport Lands, said the area does
not need another airport.
"The [passenger] forecasts are exaggerated to try and substantiate an
airport," Frederick told the Globe and Mail. "It's ludicrous and it is just
going to lead to a complete waste of resources."
Montreal's Mirabel Airport closed last month after opening to great fanfare
in 1975. Supporters predicted that Mirabel would become a gateway to the
world, luring 60 million passengers annually by 2010. At its peak, it drew
no more than three million people a year.
The federal government will have the final say on the airport after a
public review and an environmental assessment. That's expected to take at
least two years.
Shaw estimated that design work could begin by 2007, and that the airport
could be open for business by 2012.
