Dear Friends and Fellow Retirees,
In an effort to reach the greatest number of Canada based retirees as possible
(some of whom make their home outside Canada now), we ask those of you on-line
to disseminate the following information to your friends and colleagues who
don’t have a computer.
How to get the latest news on Pensions if you don’t own a computer:
Pionairs is doing its best to keep you informed about your pension. You’ll
receive a letter in your June paycheque envelope from the Pension and Benefits
Committee letting you know what’s being done to defend and preserve our
pensions and benefits and how you can help. Waiting for a letter through the
mail is not necessarily the fastest way to be kept informed, however. There are
two ways that are much faster for you to get the most recent information.
The first is to get an e-mail address and provide it to the Pionairs so they
can send you messages. (Don’t stop reading: You don’t need to own a computer to
receive the e-mails). Even though you don’t own a computer you can still
have an
e-mail address and check your mail whenever you want. Suppliers such as Hotmail
provide e-mail addresses free of charge. Here’s what you do:
To get your own e-mail address:
1.Ask a friend with a computer to go to the hotmail website. To do this you
type in www.hotmail.com
2.When the HOTMAIL page appears click on NEW ACCOUNT STARTUP
3.Fill in the form that will be displayed. You will be asked to choose a name
for your address. It could be your own name. For example,
will also be asked to choose a password. It should be a word you will easily
remember since you’ll need it each time you check your mail.
4.Don’t forget to give your e-mail address to the Pionairs so they can send you
mail. Go to the Pionairs website www.pionairs.ca Click on "To Join the Pionairs
Email List – Pionairs News" and fill in the form. If you are not already a
Pionair you can join for a small fee of $10 and information that is being
emailed to all Pionairs will now be e-mailed to you too.
Now you’re in business. Once you have your e-mail address you don’t always have
to borrow your friend’s computer. You can go to a library or other public place
such as a coffee shop with computer service (called cyber-cafés which usually
charge a small fee) to pick up your mail and read it. You simply sit down in
front of the computer and type in, for example, www.hotmail.com and then
type in
the password you chose.
If you don’t want to get an e-mail address:
There’s another way of getting the information that Pionairs publishes. Go to
your friend’s or to a public place with computers and type in www.pionairs.ca
This will take you to the Pionairs home page (that’s just the first page of the
Pionairs website). Here you’ll find a title called "Pionairs e-mailList
Newsletter". Under that title click on "Back Issues of the Pionairs News" then
click on the "threads".
Once you do this a few times it will become second nature. You’ve risen to
greater challenges in the past. This one is not as hard as it seems. Your kids
and grandkids will be so impressed!

Air Canada's overall capacity is being reduced by 17 per cent year over
year for June, July and, on a preliminary basis, August. Asian and
transborder routes are primarily affected with a 60 per cent and 25 per cent
capacity reduction respectively.
Service will be temporarily suspended until Labour Day between the following
cities:
Toronto-Kansas City,
Toronto-New Orleans
Toronto-St. Louis.
Service will be suspended until the summer schedule of 2004 on the following
routes:
Calgary-Chicago;
Montreal-Atlanta;
Montreal-San Francisco;
Toronto-San Diego;
Toronto-Tokyo/ Narita;
Vancouver-Washington/Dulles
Vancouver-Nagoya.
Service to Dayton and Grand Rapids will be suspended indefinitely.
As a result of the reduction in flying, approximately 40 aircraft will be
grounded. The fleet reductions include wide-body and narrow-body aircraft at
the Mainline carrier and some turbo-prop aircraft at Air Canada Jazz.

A walk down memory lane…
In the past months, we have been asking for your thoughts as the end of
operations at Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport draw near.
Over the years, hundreds of thousands of people from distant shores have
arrived at Terminal 1, ready to apply to become Canadian citizens or landed
immigrants. Terminal 1 has been called “Canada’s Ellis Island” by many,
referring to the now famous and celebrated US entry point for over 22 million
new immigrants during the period of 1892 to 1924. Through the years, many
immigrants have come to Canada to start new lives, and oftentimes this journey
started in Terminal 1.
Now with this historical landmark set to be torn down upon the opening of the
new terminal, the GTAA is taking efforts to preserve the heritage and stories
of Terminal 1. When the GTAA began asking people about their stories, we
discovered that there are many to tell.
Already, readers have sent us personal anecdotes and poignant moments. But we
want to hear from more of you. Do you have a moment that stands out in your
mind that you would like to share with others? Your stories will be published
in future issues of the GTAA Update, and some will appear in a commemorative
book, now underway.
If you are interested in contributing to this important search or if you know
someone who would be, please contact us. Preserving the history of Terminal 1
is an important step as we continue making Toronto Pearson International
Airport the premier gateway to Canada and to North America. Help us illustrate
this important passageway in Canada’s history.

and help promote our event!!... It may help us all come September to get

Airways seems to do. While many passenger
airlines struggle to stay aloft during the
worst economic downdrafts the industry has
ever encountered, World seems to be defying
gravity. "Hard times in the airline industry

Better Than a Hush-Kit: Wags wonder whether Canadian charter operator Air
Transat plans to capitalize on 'Miracle Flight 236'. That was the Airbus A330
with 304 on board that ran out of fuel midway between Toronto and Lisbon and
glided 20 minutes to a dead-stick landing in the Azores. Some had speculated
that the airline might try advertising: 'Fly the Quietest Airplanes in the
Skies', or 'We're Green! Our Engines Don't Pollute Your Air!' Although some
hailed the pilots as heroes, management blamed them for exacerbating the
problem (apparently caused by an incorrectly replaced fuel line) and ordered
all pilots to take "Remedial Fuel-Management Training."
