I live in Caledon Village which is north-west of Toronto. My entire
career
of 34 yrs 8 months was with T.C.A. and Air Canada at Malton / Pearson
International.
My last position was as a Maintenance Technical Instructor.
I started in 1958 as a Learner Mechanic, wrote my licence in 1967 and
became
an instructor in 1979, retiring the end of 1992.
I then went to teach at Centennial College for 8 years.
I've been fully retired for the last 2 1/2 years and at age 62 my
interests
with golf, flying model airplanes and fly fishing I couldn't be happier
and
wonder how I ever had time to work.
Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to reading your Netletters
again.

The last flight out of Porquis Junction
Most of our readers are likely too "young" to
even know what or where Porquis Junction is.
I admit when I was a Opns/Station/Agent down
east in the mid 50's, I vaguely knew that TCA
flew into that Airport, however, I never sold a
ticket or make reservations for anyone going
there and never heard a passenger say " I just
came back from a great weekend up at "Porquis".
I really wondered if it existed altho Peter Pigott,
in his History of TCA notes that it was an emergency
landing strip in the chain of ground stations across
Canada and as such , was staffed by a Radio Operator
back in the 40's.
An accidental hit on the following web site of the "Pinetree line"
and there in black and white was a picture of the TCA
Terminal with the sign TCA and Porquois Jct.
on it, taken in 1953 which confirms that it really did exist.!!

The terminal looks fairly small and was probably similar to many
serving the small "social routes" that TCA served in those days.
Note the loading bridge i.e. steps at Gate l , ready to be pushed up
to the DC3. The TCA staff likely consisted of a Manager
or Agent in charge and an Operations agent and maybe a ramp guy.
I havent been able to locate anyone who actually worked there
but perhaps some of the people that worked up at Kap
or North Bay may remember.
The 50 year anniversary booklet about CF TCC's
"Sentimental Journey" in 1986 notes that a group of people would
be watching for the L10A's flight over Porquis Jct. but
Capt Jean Gilbert had to use a road map to find the airport
to do several flyovers.
A search of airports in Canada today show no
record of this airport.
What happened? Was is decommissioned and turned into a
farmers field?
A clue turned up when I looked at a "Enroute Low Altitude"
Transport Canada chart and noticed an ADF beacon at
Iroquois Falls. An Email to the Chamber of Commerce
and the following reply
at last filled in some of the blanks

I was asked to get you information on the Porquis Airport.
It is now known as the Iroquois Falls Municipal Airport.
I Spoke with Ed Pedskanly who has been the sort of manager
for years and he informed me that Trans-Canada Air Lines started
flying in 1938 and he believes that is when they started flying into
Porquis.
After the war they started flights from Toronto to Porquis
and then on up to Kapuskasing.
Trans-Canada Air Lines moved to Timmins on June 30, 1955.
Yes, the airport is still open today.
I am a councillor with the Town of Iroquois Falls and
have just recently been appointed as Airport Committee
chairperson for the town.
