Son Peter has applied and been accepted by AUC (Amer. Univ. of Cairo) to
complete his studies in Linguistics. Registration is late Aug. Classes start
Sept. 2nd. Can get him to LHR/CDG/FRA/RME but need info on best fares from
these AC connection points to/from CAI. May need return ticket to satisfy Visa
rqrments and is checking this out.
To date, he has rcvd mixed info on whether or not a rtn tkt is mandatory.
Would appreciate input from fellow emps/retirees that may have been down this
road.

. In NetLetter nr 778, George Brien told us a story about Porquis Junction,
and we have some follow up stories for you -
Bill Willows shares this one with us -
I worked in YQJ back in 51/52/53. I was what was then called Regional Spare for
the Central Region. Providing vacation relief, coverage when someone fell sick
or went on a training course etc. Most assignments were for eight weeks more or
less. In Porquis, between flights, picked blueberries in the summer, chopped
Xmas tress for flight crews in the winter. YQJ airport consisted of a gravel
strip until late November, then it became a snow packed airport. In Spring it
was closed for a couple of weeks while the snow melted and snow blowers were
brought in remove some eight or so feet of that white stuff. We lived in
Timmins and commuted daily some forty miles on some pretty rough winter roads.
I worked every station in the Central Region as either Radio Operator and/or
Operations Agent depending on station size. Was based in YYZ but never worked
there - which was great, as I was on expenses for the entire assignment. As I
recall, our meal allowance was $3.50 per day plus hotel room. My first trip
north to Kap was Dec. 26th, 1951 in a pre war Ford Convertible in sub zero
weather - it was unbelievably cold and I had had just spent three years in
Goose Bay. Never was it that cold in Goose Bay.
It was in March '54 while on a YQJ assignment that I switched from Operations
to Sales (Traffic Dept. those days) and opened the TCA Ticket Office in the
Empire Hotel, Timmins. I remained there until re-org in '70 ending up in PVM
until June '72 when I was transferred to CLE as Passenger & Cargo Sales
Manager. Later I was appointed D.M. CLE when Murray Stainton retired and
remained there until we closed that station in '85 where upon I took the
package. I moved to Burlington, Ontario in Nov. '98.
I still visit friends in YTS. I occasionally see Quig Quigley now living in
Guelph (an hour north of here). He too worked in YQJ - he's on the internet but
not certain of his email address.
Whenever anyone asks what contribution I made to TCA/AC I reply "I opened
Timmins CTO in '54 and closed CLE in '85."

I was interested to read about Porquis Junction and the photo which I
remembered as I flew there about 1953 when I worked at TCA Reservations YYZ. I
flew on a DC3 I believe to North Bay, Porquis and then Kap where I stayed
overnight. I remember Porquis well because as we were flying around there the
captain told us to look out and we could see a large moose wandering around. In
order to give us a better view he descended and then circled around the moose
who was beginning to panic. After, we landed at Porquis, in the middle of
nowhere. Can you imagine that happening now?

Re: Below is the revised 'Welcome Aboard' speech for you to
deliver before takeoff.
We'd like to welcome you aboard Minor Air Lines flight (xxx), with
service to (fill-in). Of course, we're supposed to go to (fill-in), but if
those dimwits at FAA Flow Control screw-up again who knows if
we'll ever get there.
"While we're still in the boarding process, may I urge those of
you who plan on looking for something buried at the bottom of
that huge bag you've crammed into the overhead compartment to
please stand up and do so now. That way you can inconvenience
the maximum number of fellow-passengers and slow the boarding
process. That will then give me an excuse to throw a hissy fit and
insist that everyone please take a seat as quickly as possible or we'll
miss our 'on-time departure'.
"If, by some miracle, we do push back on time, don't get your
hopes up. Chances are we'll spend half-an-hour taxiing for takeoff,
and even if we do arrive on schedule we'll probably have to wait for
a gate.
"Shortly you may notice the appetizing smell of warm fresh-
baked chocolate chip cookies. Don't let the delicious aroma
distract you. Those cookies are only for passengers in first and business
class.
Your high-cholesterol, high-sodium, stale pre-packaged snack
thingies will be distributed later.
In a few moments one of my colleagues will pass through the
aisle loudly slamming shut the overhead doors while I follow
glancing at your crotch to check that you've fastened your seatbelt.
If you happen to catch my eye I'll fake a smile, pretending that I'm glad
to have you aboard-even though you're dressed as if you've been out
washing a car and look like you can't afford a bus ticket.
Then, after meal service is over, my colleagues and I will gather in the
rear galley and talk about you.
As we taxi along we'll start playing that
ridiculous safety video. Yes, we know that many
of you are too 'cool' to pay attention. But you'd
better, because if this thing has an accident
you're all on your own. May we note that there
is also a safety brochure in the seatback pocket
in front of you? In the event of a water landing
you are instructed to open it and locate the
lyrics to "Row, row your boat".
0nce we've reached our cruising altitude
we'll be coming through the cabin with those
serving carts, which will then make it impossible
for any of you to reach the lavatories.
Meanwhile we invite you to sit back and pray
that you'll make your connecting flights.
We thank you for flying with us, and want
you to know that everyone at Minor Air Lines
really enjoys taking you for a ride."
