Hello everyone,
As a result of Bill Rowe withdrawing his name from the nomination
list due to his ineligibility, a fact learned by Air Canada Pension
Management and your Executive Board after nomination ballots had been
distributed to eligible voters, your Executive Board carried out a
search for a suitable candidate. Fortunately we have found an highly
qualified. energetic, and dedicated Pionair whom we strongly endorse.
His name is Saville Hambleton, former President, Air Canada Pionairs.
Many already know of the work he has done on behalf of the Pioairs
and his willingness to take on this nomination is appreciated by the
National Executive. Please spread the news above to as many as possible
eligible voters and those who have not submitted their nomination
ballots.

Stew Freeman sent us this query -
Some flight check in staff insist that we fill in the zone box on u-write
tickets. I thought that the office did that at the completion of the trip. When
we start out, we do not always know how far we will travel in regard to zones.
Employee Travel & Recognition advises -
The requirement to fill in the zone box goes back to a previous policy
regarding trip pass tickets. Prior to October 2000 the employee/retiree
was required to fill in the intended itinerary on the first coupon of
the trip pass ticket. This was used for billing purposes.
The current billing process builds the complete trip based on data keyed
by the data centre from each coupon submitted. The pricing is done in
Payrolls based on actual travel.
It doesn't hurt to fill in the zone box, but it's not necessary.

Jess Rougeau advises -
Interlining Plus just informed me that they would compete with another
travel company on their cost of the tour - so it is now $1650.00 Cdn per
person (and not $1699.00 per person.) There is still a $20.00 per room
booking charge.
Don't forget the deadline is April 25th. Interlining Plus has made a
deposit to Trafalgar to hold the tour for us. Evidently Trafalgar is
very busy and alot of tours are sold out but this one is held for us.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting some old friends in the U.K.,
Leon Swanepoel and his wife. He is a retired airline pilot in the UK and they
let us have the use of a flat that rents for GBP30.00 per day. This includes a
bedroom and a sitting room with kitchenette and three piece bathroom, no
shower. There is another bedroom available if two couples are travelling
together. Extra bedroom another GBP30.00 per day, both couples share the
sitting room, etc. Among the amenities included are, a rollaway bed if
needed, a partially stocked bar, which had in our case a bottle of whisky,
bottle of wine, some beer, milk, bread, tea biscuits and other useful things
that don't need to be bought if you are right off the plane.
The flat is located in Kingston upon Thames and has good train service
to London's Waterloo station, about 15 minutes. from the station at Surbiton,
closest to Leon's. Leon says that often he can meet your flight from Canada
and drive you to the house and back to the airport. He is very hospitable and
humorous as is his wife Barbara. They are looking for rentals that last for
at least a week.

Air Canada Jazz announced that it will introduce the newly acquired 50-seat
CRJs on the Toronto-Baltimore route effective May 6th with one roundtrip per
day initially. As more are acquired this spring additional frequencies will be
offered replacing the DHC-8s currently being used. On May 5th, the two daily
trips between Toronto and Indiannapolis will see the Jazz CRJs replace the Air
Canada CRJs currently being used. On June 16th Jazz CRJs will replace the F-28s
on both Toronto-Frederiction and the Toronto-Saint John NB routes with three
round trips per day each. Other routes will be announced later.

BLAME CANADA: SNOWBIRDS' FUTURE PONDERED...
The International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) has launched an online
lobbying effort to convince the Canadian government to buy new jets for
the Snowbirds demo team. The Snowbirds are the only air demo team in
the Western Hemisphere with a nine-jet routine, but currently fly the
Canadair Tutor, a 42-year-old tandem trainer that was phased out two
years ago. The government has committed to operating the Snowbirds,
with the Tutors, until 2006 -- after that, team mechanics may run out of
bailing wire.

. Remember when.
The inaugural flight of the de Havilland DH106 'Comet' took off from
London's Heathrow Airport on May 2nd 1952, just 50 years ago. The 36 seat
B.O.A.C. Comet G-ALYP flew to Johannesburg in 21 hours via Rome, Beirut,
Khartoum, Entebbe and Livingstone.
Early on, however, the first series Comet jets were beset by a series of
catastrophic losses due to structural failure which was not fully understood at
the time. Comet G-ALYP, which operated the first scheduled jet service, was
among the early casualties, having crashed near the island of Elba off the
coast of Italy on 10 January 1954.
Frame 6022, G-APAS, ex-Air France F-BGNZ, exists as the only surviving and
in-tact example of a deHavilland Ghost-powered Comet 1 series aircraft.
Converted to Mk 1XB in March, 1957, the aircraft was reregistered XM823
andsubsequently as G-APAS; its final flight was made on 8 April 1968 and the
aircraft was thereafter retired. Currently residing at the Aerospace Museum at
Cosford, near Shifnal in Shropshire, England,
"Alpha Sierra" appears to have been remarkably well preserved albeit in open
air storage for more than thirty years!
