Heading To Europe During The Summer? Plan Ahead And Bring Alternate Tickets.
We anticipate heavy flight loads to Europe during the peak summer periods of
July and August. Standby travel during this time may be extremely difficult.
Last minute ticket requests are not acceptable and put an additional strain on
our Airport colleagues who will be busy attending to our revenue customers.
Customer Service Agents are not expected to process these requests. Therefore,
consider using Family Affair tickets as another travel option. The Company will
not issue you a refund if you purchase a full-fare ticket, so be prepared
before you leave home. Bring back up tickets for other carriers and ensure that
you have the extra money or a credit card to cover any additional expenses.

. From the Quebec Pionairs newsletter 'Sentinel' -
Highlights of the AGM Halifax
Membership: membership currently stands at 9300 and growing, with Pionairs
living in 30 different countries. On a sad note 138 members and 78 spouses have
passed away.
Bylaws: Technical and legal changes were made to the bylaws to include retirees
from Canadian and its constituent airlines; to make spouses and legal partners
full Pionair members; to remove from the board of directors the pension rep.
and to add up to four appointed Directors on the executive board. This increase
is necessary because of the vast increase in membership and subsequent
administrative requirements. The purpose of the Association was also broadened
to represent all retirees to Air Canada in all matters having impact on their
welfare, rather than being mainly social.
In June 2003, dues will increase from $7.50 to $10.00 per year for retirees and
$5.00 per year for widows or widowers, because of the larger membership and
increasing costs of automation and administration.
A nominating committee was struck consisting of the last three past presidents,
as per the bylaws to select the next executive for Sept. 2003. The proposed
slate of officers for the National Executive will be presented at the AGM in
Ottawa next April.
RAP Program: The Retiree Assistance Program much like the EAP (Employee
Assistance Program) is well under way. It is designed as a totally confidential
referral program to help any retiree in distress, whether or not they are
Pionairs. We in the Quebec District are lucky to have three ladies who
volunteered their help. They are Pam Rosholt, Yvonne Mofford and Margo
L’Esperance. They recently attended a seminar in Toronto to be trained in
helping and guiding those who come forward and ask for assistance. Their
telephone numbers are listed on pg. 14.
Pension Report: While all investment funds lost value over the last year, Air
Canada pension fund decreased only slightly and in fact was one of the better
performers. The fund is protected and is designed to ensure that all pensions
will be paid. Air Canada cannot access it and no Air Canada equities are
permitted in the fund.
Automation: One of the few major programs authorized this year by the
company is
the investment of $1.75 million to automate pension and employee/retiree
benefits, including travel. Automating these functions represents major savings
to Air Canada. In addition to major savings, the objective is to make it easy
for employees/retirees to access information and serve themselves, 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. If you have Internet access you will be able to access
files, obtain pension information, update personal data, download and file
forms, monitor pass allocations and usage, select either credit card payment or
pay deduction (pension check). There will also be a new price structure for
pass travel, with lower service charges on shorter flights and some higher fees
on multi-segment flights. Those of you who don’t have Internet access will
still be able to contact call centers and other facilities by phone.
2003 AGM: The 2003 AGM with be held in Ottawa the end of April.

On one trip, in the 'good old days' of the Douglad DC4 operating by SAS, a
passenger boarded with a tin of sour herring, which literally exploded as the
unpressurized plane reached cruising altitude. So the purser grabbed the smelly
tin, ran to the cockpit and handed it to the captain, who opened his side
window and tossed out the offending tin, which promptly smacked into the
horizontal stabalizer forcing a precautionary emergency landing.
Observing passengers boarding a Finnair DC-9 through its ventral stairs, one
passenger was heard to remark "Look at all those people disappearing into
Finnair".
