. Terry Denny sends this followup story -
The reference to the disappearance of Indy the dog at Dorval Airport in
Netletter #709 brought to mind a rather more amusing account of a
missing animal some years back at the TCA Cargo Terminal in Vancouver.
Betty Gabb-Jones, now deceased, who was one of the principal players in
this drama worked for many years in the TCA/AC Public Relations
Department and related this tale to several of the PR staff following
many cocktails one evening. Betty, born in India and raised and educated
in England, had emigrated to the west coast of Canada in the late 1950's
to seek employment. Trans Canada Air Lines hired her and she commenced
working as a clerk/typist in the airline's cargo terminal at Vancouver
Airport. (At this point, it should be noted that Betty, with limited
time in Canada, had little or no real knowledge or understanding of the
flora or fauna of our great land.) At the commencement of her lunch
break one hot and sultry Vancouver day, Betty walked from the
administrative office onto the cargo terminal floor planning to stand
outside the hangar doors to get a breath of fresh air. She happened to
pass a fairly large cage and to her dismay espied a very large German
Shepherd dog (her description) lying disconsolately therein. The large
greyish-brown animal seemed to be suffering from the heat so being the
kind soul she was and with a love of animals she searched for a piece of
rope to place about its neck to allow her to safely transport it outside
to take the air and to ease its bladder. Not knowing the rules and regs
governing this sort of action (if, in fact there were any rules and regs
at the time) she opened the latch on the cage and coaxed the animal to
leave its temporary abode thence tying the rope around its neck to form
a rudimentary leash. With her new friend in tow she proceeded to lead
him outside to attend to excremental matters all of this performed
beyond the vision and knowledge of any other employee of the terminal.
After about half an hour and a successful discharge of his duties, she
returned with her charge to the hangar door opening to find the place in
turmoil. One rather distraught individual in full flight from the
premises screamed at her to beware as a large timber wolf had got loose
from his cage and was thought to be likely to threaten the staff. At
this point, Betty came to the realization that her skills at canine
identification might be somewhat in need of remedial action. Now most
people, many put to bed with tales of a little girl in a red cape
visiting "grandmother" which likely became the root cause of nightmares
in the very young, would be excused at this moment for feeling faint of
heart and suddenly making a run for the high ground sans large furry
beast. But, Betty, with stiff upper lip and in true pukka fashion
learned from her earlier days on the frontier of what would later become
Pakistan, bit the bullet and took full responsibility for returning the
animal to its cage. She marched into the terminal and with her approach
the waters parted so to speak as those brave enough to still stay in the
terminal (now armed with brooms, mops and other implements of defense)
moved aside quickly to allow her passage. With little fuss, she untied
the rope from around the wolf's neck and returned him to his cage to the
utter amazement of her colleagues. Judging by the uproar she had caused
she recognized immediately that her actions might not be viewed as
overly charitable by management and that her career in TCA might be
short-lived at best. However, following a short meeting with her
supervisor and a promise not to free any other animals she kept her job
and carried on for 35 more years until her retirement in the early
1990's. She always maintained that the wolf had acted extremely politely
and as a "perfect gentleman" unlike it is thought many of her two-legged
male colleagues. But that's another story.

. Terry's travel tips.
Doug Davidson sends this info -
Since folks are often asking about hotels I offer this. Priceline is great.
Last week, we stayed at Doubletree Club at JFK for US $52 and Grand Hyatt
next to Grand Central Station in Manhattan for US $90.
The trick is to check www.biddingfortravel.com first and see what prices
other people have been able to get.
You need a U.S. credit card with Priceline unfortunately. My son is in
Minneapolis and is very helpful! Best regards. Doug Davidson.

RR in YYZ has this info -
ALAMO RENT-A-CAR USA. I have uncovered a little known bargain offered by
Alamo Rent A Car. I have taken advantage of this rate in Florida, California &
Hawaii. In addition to the Travel Industry Rate, Alamo offers a "prepaid" rate
all in (tax/gas/insurance/free mileage) in Canadian dollars. You have to ask
for
the prepaid Canadian dollar rate. I believe cancellation can be made up until
48 hours prior to arrival. Recent example - Mid Sized Car in Florida for 7
days.
$229.00 USD plus, plus -- Prepaid rate $147.00 CDN all inclusive. Huge
savings and billed on a credit card in Canadian dollars. Safe driving!!
RR - YYZ

If you are travelling through Houston either on AC or connecting through
Continental's hub, the Hilton Garden Hotel about 10 minutues from the airport
gives a great rate to airline employees, is a lovely hotel and has a free
shuttle
service.
Also, if you end up overnighting in Newark, again as Continental's
Hub, the Holiday Inn at the airport is Continental's crew hotel, has a free
shuttle, and a great airline employee rate.

Just checking out car rental rates for florida. If you go with Avis, you can
get
a better discount with your Costco Wholesale Card than with the Air Canada
Corp. rate!

. Smilie.
Ted Tierney sends this one -

Two "foreign" pilots stagger out from a tavern not knowing what day it is,
never mind the time.
One looks up at the sky and says "Tell me, ish that the moon or the sun?"
Second guy peers up and says   "but which one ... which one?"
