high demand on these routes, additional flights from Montreal-Frankfurt (AC882,
AC883) and Calgary-Frankfurt (AC852, AC853), have been loaded in RES for the
August-September schedule

From the Vancouver Island and Gulf Island newsletter -
As many of you are aware “Jazz” no longer operates in or out of Comox and
Campbell River, being replaced by Pacific Coast Airlines. Contingent and
Employee Travel will be allowed using a “Z” fare. Cost is $13.00 U.S. each way
plus a $12.00 Cdn. Security Tax each way. In addition there is a Comox Airport
Improvement Fee of $5.35 Cdn. I’m not sure if Campbell River have an A.I.F.
Should your trip take you beyond Vancouver, a further $12.00 Cdn. each way
security charge will be assessed. These additional security charges ($24.00)
can be claimed from Air Canada by submitting photo copies of ALL travel
documents. Self ticketing Retirees, send claim to: Payrolls YWG 859, P.O. Box
768 Winnipeg. Non-self ticketing send request to “Refunds” YWG 859, Box 6475
Winnipeg. Pacific Coastal will continue to operate in/out of the South Terminal
in Vancouver and cannot provide baggage transfer. You will need to collect your
bags and take them with you on the shuttle bus to the Main Terminal and check
them in prior to boarding mainline flights. You can, of course, use Nanaimo or
Victoria as your departure/arrival station.

October 3 - Fall Lunch in Nanaimo at the Longwood Brew Pub, located in the
Longwood Mall off the Old Island Hwy. & Turner Road. Meet & greet at 11:30 AM;
12:30 lunch; cost P.P. $18.00. This restaurant can only take a maximum of 80
persons, book early by sending your cheque payable to A/C Pionairs, to our
Treasurer, Marjorie Thorpe in Comox. In addition tours of the Micro Brewery can
be arranged after lunch (no charge), for those interested.
December - Dates and Locations to be advised.
(1) Christmas lunch in the Victoria area (primarily for those South of Duncan)
(2) Christmas lunch in Qualicum Beach (for those North of Duncan)
It may seem a bit strange to have two Christmas lunches, but in order to
accommodate those in the various locales and the possibility of poor weather,
it was felt this would allow more Pionairs to participate. Attendance at both
lunches is encouraged for those interested.
Our goal in future is to issue a Newsletter three times per year. Mailing costs
are so high it was thought letters every four months approx. would suffice. Our
next letter is planned for mid November. We would encourage those with e-mail
addresses to advise us in order that we can make contact, other than Canada
Post.
A suggestion was made at a recent lunch that the Vancouver Island & Gulf
Islands Pionairs support the “Dreams take Flight” program, seems like an
excellent suggestion. We can probably take the revenue from any 50/50 draws and
earmark it for this program. This can be discussed at the October 3rd luncheon,
or send your opinions to

at the various functions.
Report on the Niagara Peninsula Coffee Group (the new kids on the block).
Since our inception in February we have enjoyed excellent support from the
retirees in the Niagara Peninsula. We have a hardworking committee including
Secy/Treasurer Isabel Fox and Social Convenor Margaret Smith-Slingerland who
have worked hard to ensure the success of our fledgling group.
Our main social event so far is the Grand River Cruise scheduled for September
23. At $31.00 for a 3.1/2hr cruise with dinner and entertainment we feel it is
too good to pass up. Although it is selling fast we still have room for a few
more, but we must have names and payments before the cut-off date of Sept. 2nd.
At our meeting today (Aug.6th) we enjoyed a lively discussion on a wide-ranging
variety of topics from the increased cost of emergency travel insurance to the
manner in which airport security charges are being applied.
We also managed to fit in some funny stories with contributions from Bob
Hainstock, Gord Dalziel and yours truly.
The dinner for two prize at Frados Restaurant was won by first time attendee
Art and Mary Jasinski and raffle prizes were won by June Dalziel and Margaret
Morgan.
We extend a special invitation to visitors. Please come and join us the first
Tuesday of the month at Frados Restaurant by the Welland Canal at Homer Bridge
where you can watch the ships go through the canal while enjoying lunch. We can
provide complete directions by E-mail or by telephone.
Come and make a day of it in the beautiful Niagara area. Visit some wineries
after the meeting and take home some of our bountiful harvest of fresh fruit.

DC-3 c/n 11906 CF-TES
Skytrain built as 42-92139 and delivered to the US Army Air Force on 10th
Septem-
ber, 1943, but diverted as Lend-Lease aircraft to the Royal Air Force as Dakota
Mk. I I I FL547 , going to 511 Squadron in the United Kingdom after its
Atlantic ferry flight on 23rd January, 1944. The squadron was based at RAF
Lyneham in Wiltshire. On 20th August, 1945, FL547 joined 105 Operational
Training Unit at RAF Bramcote, Warwickshire, this unit becoming 1381 Transport
Conversion Unit on 14 November, 1945. On 30th April, 1946, the aircraft was
flown to 22 Maintenance Unit located at Silloth in Cumberland. On 17 July,
1946, it was sold to Canadair Limited in Montreal and was converted for
passenger airline use with Trans Canada Air Lines, to whom it was delivered on
17th January , 1947, and registered CF-TES, Fleet No.91, later 391. It served
the airline well until 13th April, 1963, when it was sold to Transair Limited.
In June 1967 it went to Lambair Ltd. of The Pas, Manitoba, and was withdrawn
from use in 1970. Now at
Western Canada Aviation Museum, PO Box 99, Station C, Winnipeg, Manitoba RJM
JS6, Canada No date is available for its transfer to the Western Canada
Aviation Museum.

From the report sent in by Moncton -
Coming in close company with the New Year were many changes for our Department.
With three types of equipment, DC-3's, Lodestars and 14-08's, we find our work
pretty well cut out for us. This is quite a different situation to the old days
when all our aircraft were 14-08's. However our work is much more in- teresting
now and it should never make "Jack a dull boy".
On December 6, we saw our first DC-3. There was much to-do about this occasion
and we found out that compartment one is up front and compartment five is not
the blue-room. We are now waiting with baited breath to get out first view of
the North Star - when that happens our cups will overflow.

NEW 747 TAKES FLIGHT: Boeing July 31st saw the first flight of its
newest biggie -- the 747-ER can carry 15,000 more pounds of people or
cargo and can fly about 410 nautical miles farther than existing 747-
400s. After three hours of uneventful flying, the aircraft safely
landed at Boeing Field in Seattle. This new model of the 747 -- the
first since 1993 -- does not differ in size from its predecessors and
offers its advantages through various structural changes, an additional
fuel tank ... and a strengthened fuselage and landing gear. The 747-ER
is said to offer larger carry-on compartments and more spacious
interiors, similar to Boeing's 767 and 777 models. The new jet's
launch customer will be Qantas Airways, which has placed an order for
nine aircraft in a modified freighter version.
