Harmonized personal travel priorities - no news yet -
When we (Air Canada) communicated information about the harmonized
travel policy in September 2000, we had hoped that seniority integration
issues would be resolved by the time a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
was granted. We had also hoped that boarding priorities could be harmonized
without an impact on seniority decisions.
The reality is that arbitration hearings are expected to continue for several
months. In order to avoid giving the appearance of a bias in these sensitive
deliberations, NO changes will be made to the current personal travel
boarding priorities until such time as a majority of these seniority issues have been confirmed.
Air Canada's regional airlines announced that effective May 7,
there will be daily non-stop F-28 jet service between
Indianapolis and Toronto.
The (US) international air transportation tax (ATT) applies
for any international travel to/from the usa or involving a|
stopover in the USA at $12.80usd for each arrival/departure
respectively (some exceptions apply)
Ticketing
To comply with ATT requirements, Air Canada must collect
the tax on all standby service charge trip pass tickets and
reduced rate tickets under the following conditions:
(a) travel to the USA originating in Canada or any other
international point outside the USA
(b) travel from the USA to any international point outside
the USA
(c) travel to/from an international destination via the USA
ie. YYZ-AC-IAH and IAH-CO-MEX
Refund
Space available contingent passengers travelling via the
USA to/from international destinations on a connection basis
are now eligible for a deferred refund of the (US) ATT
provided the following conditions are met:
- travel originated in Canada or an international point
outside the USA
- ticket(s) were issued outside the USA
- travel commenced on or after September 1, 1999
to request refund of the us air transportation tax, a letter
must be submitted as per the applicable address below along
with the following documents and information:
- employee number/name/address
- photocopy of all tickets
- all boarding passes showing in-transit/connection travel
- pay/pension cheque period of the original tax deduction

Air Canada Celebrates 50 Years Of Flying Between Montreal And Paris.
Two beavers marked the official inauguration of Air Canada's passenger air
service between Montréal and Paris as the airline, then known as
Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), touched down in Paris on April 1, 1951
to much fanfare and celebration.
The first flight was also the first Canadian air link with continental
Europe and it set the stage for an unprecedented boom in tourism, trade and
travel across the Atlantic.
Back in April 1951, weekly passenger service from Montréal to Paris' Orly
International Airport was operated with 40-seat DC-4M "North Star" propeller
aircraft. Flight time was 14 hours with stops in Reykjavik for fuel and London
Heathrow. Today, a non-stop flight from Montréal to Paris Charles de Gaulle
takes six hours and 45 minutes on one of Air Canada's state-of-the-art 292-
passenger A330 aircraft featuring the airline's acclaimed Executive First and
Hospitality service.

June 15 until September 30, 2001:

Air Canada and Korean Air flights to Seoul started using the newly opened
airport called Incheon (ICN) today. The old airport called Kimpo (SEL) will be
kept in operation for domestic flights primarily. The new airport was built offshore
to avoid noise and curfew problems and has made allowances for future
expansion of runways and terminal facilities.
Air Canada is re-entering the Cuba market this summer. Turns out that in
addition to the Toronto-Varadero route starting on May 5th, it will be starting service
from Toronto to Ciego de Avilla on May 6th once per week on Sundays.
A Montreal-Varadero route will also be operated on Sundays starting May 6th as well.
This will make three flights per week during the summer months and the first time
Air Canada has ever operated into the airport at Ciego de Avilla.

A Red Light, a Peephole and a Whisper
As a Midwest Express jetliner approached the Omaha airport last week,
a warning light in the cockpit indicated a possible landing gear problem.
Following standard procedure, the crew aborted, informed passengers of the
situation, and a pilot walked back to check through a floor peephole whether
the landing gear was locked down or had a real problem. After struggling to
pull up a new carpet, the pilot spent several minutes staring into the hole
sat up, then stared again. A large passenger with huge hands leaned over and
whispered, "Would you like an A&P [airframe and power plant] mechanic with
30 years experience on the DC-9 to take care of this?" to the pilot. "Yes, sir,"
the pilot replied. The mechanic said it didn't take more than two seconds to
see that the gear was down and locked. The pilot returned to the cockpit and
announced the news that an experienced mechanic was on board and
everything was all right. As he thanked the mechanic again upon deplaning,
the mechanic handed the pilot his card. The pilot looked at it:
"John Goglia, member, National Transportation Safety Board" and former
mechanic with USAir.
