. Need to know.

Setting the record straight Air Canada employees don't receive an annual free trip pass.
We can't establish how, when, or where this story began, and we want to put an end to its perpetual motion. Active and retired Air Canada employees don't receive an annual trip pass with service charges waived as part of their pass allotment. (Employee Communications)

In the recently issued information, mailed to all retirees regarding improvements to the
speech and web site for listing travel, it was suggested that, when using the Speech
Recognition method when referring to the booking reference, one uses the military
alphabet. The alphabet is listed in Chapter 4 page 9 of 'Your Travel Guide'
Industry Travel emailed us the information which we repeat it here for your convenience -

Air Canada and IBM form strategic partnership.
July 20th marks the beginning of a seven-year, $1.4 billion CA strategic agreement between Air Canada and IBM. This new partnership will allow us to e-enable the airline, enhance customer service, and develop future solutions based on a world-leading information technology (IT) infrastructure. As a result of this agreement, Air Canada expects to save approximately $200 million in IT costs over the term of the agreement. This relationship encompasses far more than computer systems management. It's about innovation, pursuing new business opportunities, increasing shareholder value, and improving the overall travel experience of our customers. In addition, IBM will invest in various venture capital and technology projects at Air Canada.  (Employee Communications)

. We have another story from Tom Martin, following the one in NetLetter nr 605 -

The only other time I thought I'd had it was when Del Bourgeois and the late Al Turner and I were on our way back from Lima, where we had been negotiating with Aero Peru to provide tech. support for the two L1011s they were leasing - the ones originally built for the California operator with the lounge in the belly.  We were on our way back to MIA on an Aero Peru DC8 40 series - ex Air Jamaica - that Aero Peru were still operating and for which we were providing tech services.  On take off from Mexico City the Captain had to abort and I remembered our Flt. Ops people weren't thrilled with the AP crew skills.  The Captain turned around and restarted his take off while we said a few prayers, but we made it.  Lots of memories.

. Found on the internet.

.  Experts: Wright Plane Near Miracle
Aviation experts building a flying
replica of the world's first airplane have found the Wright
stuff - in the hands of modern pilots, anyway - is a little
wrong. Orville and Wilbur Wright made four brief flights on
Dec. 17, 1903, marking the first time a manned plane sustained
powered flight. That same day, a gust of wind mangled their
handmade aircraft and it never flew again. "I'd say it was
almost a miracle they were able to fly it," said Jack Cherne
an aeronautical engineer who is chairman of the Wright Flyer
Project, sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Using that data
they created a computer flight simulator that shows the plane
to be so unstable, it is nearly impossible to fly.

ELECTRIC AIRPLANE TO DEBUT AT OSHKOSH...
The Worcester Gazette recently interviewed Jim Dunn, president of
Advanced Technology Products Corp.  Dunn is leading a collaboration
between Advanced Technology Products and a Florida company to create the
world's first electric-powered airplane.  An early prototype, to be
powered by batteries and fuel cells, will be debuted at the EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh 2001 Fly-In.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO SOLVING THE EARHART MYSTERY:
According to Space.Com,
recent satellite images seem to reveal the wreckage of an airplane in an
area often suspected as a possible crash location of Amelia Earhart.
The images were taken over Nikumaroro, formerly Gardner Island.  All of
this is great news for an expedition scheduled to leave Los Angeles on
August 24.  The group's earlier expeditions to the island have revealed
some artifacts believed by some to be evidence of the doomed flight.

Subject: Early Co Newsletters

Our archivist, Caterina Trotto, needs assistance in locating copies of
early TCA  newsletters. She has those from 1943 onward. She requires copies
in the 1940-1942 period. I recall that in this period it was first called
Transcan News and then became Between Ourselves. Miss Trotto's E-mail
address is <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>. The late Don McLeod became editor in the
autumn of 1942 but his wife cannot locate anything. If you wish to retain
them, copies could be made. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

....and one from Adele Wallace -
Can I ask if anyone can recommend an organized tour (Italy, Europe,) that I
could take a first time traveler on in October. I have the Trafalgar booklet
and they offer us 10 percent off. Anyone know of any other tour company that
I should be looking at? reply to

. Smilie.
Lawson Tremellon sends us this -
The weather in the east is so mixed up some days we get all four seasons in
the same day.
July 11th was hot and muggy, then it got chilly and ended with large hail
which left icy crystals all over the lawn. The temperature dropped from 27
to 14 in less than 5 minutes. We were driving at the time in my sons jeep
and he has one of those outside temperature devices.
Cheers Lawson Tremellen
