. We received the following question from an ex CAIL employee  -
Quote -
Recently I received my regular pension cheque, for the first time ever, it
came from Air Canada Winnipeg. usually it came from Royal Trust Pension
Services Toronto..Can you tell me why ?? What happens to my pension if Air
Canada Goes the way of PWA and Canadian Airlines..also the next day ,I got a
statement saying they are depositing our Aug payment on the first of Aug
instead of the 28th..does this mean we are getting our cheques at the
beginning of the month from now on, I am sure many retirees are interested in
the answer..many thanks
Unquote

The response from Air Canada is -

Air Canada has now taken over the responbility of paying the CAIL
retirement payroll.
An advice will be coming to all retirees shortly to explain all of the
changes. We have changed the payroll to be on the first of the month
of pay ie August pension will be paid on August 1st.
If you have any questions you can contact Margaret Orne in the
Winnipeg Pension office at (204) 941-2553.

. Remember when?
On November 1st, 1955, a Trans-Canada Air Lines North Star left YUL at
09:30 and
landed in Quebec City at 10:10 on the first leg of an historical journey. 20
minues
later it departed for Saguenay arriving at 11:15. It finally landed at Sept
Isles at 13:45
marking the beginning of service to that city. J.G.(Sam) Samoisette was the
Station Manager at that time.

. From Don McKay -

From: "Don McKay"
Subject: What is in a name?

Two years ago my wife and I, trailer in tow, left our Ottawa valley home for
Alaska and the
Yukon and many points of interest in between. On leaving Dawson city for Tok in
Alaska
via what is known as "the top of the world highway ", we stopped at the small
town of
Chicken, strange name we thought, with everything in the North there is a
story. Apparently
in the heady days of the goldrush several oldtimers got together to form a new
town, the
general concensus was that the town should be called "Ptarmigan ", nobody could
spell
it hence the name "Chicken ".
I thought you should know.

. John Gallagher sends this -
Fatal Voyage is Kathy Reich fourth book and was released this week. It's
about an airline accident. I'm receiving many phone calls about my name as
her aviation expert. I worked with Kathy for a couple years. The list should
also state the few hundred Air Canada employees of flight dispatch,
training, maintenance, security, cargo, hazmat, sales and many pilots. I
thank all of you.  John Gallagher  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. We recently received the following  comment with regard to the Speech
Recognition system not recognizing the replies -
Quote
We were in Honolulu trying to get on a flight in April so we wanted to
make sure we were listed. We called the Speech Recognition number and followed
all the instructions but every time we answered it could not understand either
of us. We were at a loss to understand why it could not comprehend the word
"two" when asking how many people would be travelling. I mean, how many ways
can you say "two"?
Eventually we gave up and 'phoned Reservations and were helped by a very
co-operative agent.

Unquote.

We put this comment to Industry Travel and the following is their response -

"I have spoken about this with the IT group and the only reason
they can say the  "two" would not have been understood was that SR is
very
sensitive and often will not understand if there is background noise.
Normally ECC reports all the problems directly to  IT and as far as I
know the process is working."

(Remember, if having a problem, it could be due to background noises (or
clearing your throat
before responding - that will do it - eds))

. Smilie.
Art Kupchanko sends this one -
I Won't Take No For An Answer

A travel agent looked up from his desk to see an older lady and
an older gentleman peering in the shop window at the posters
showing the glamorous destinations around the world.

The agent, have had an exceedingly profitable year, seeing the
dejected couple looking in the window was inspired to a rare feeling
of generosity.

He called them into his shop and said, "I bet that on your pension
you could never hope to have a holiday, so I am sending you off to
a fabulous resort at my expense, and I won't take no for an answer!"

He took them inside and asked his secretary to write two flight
tickets and to book a room in a five star hotel. They, as expected,
gladly accepted, and were on their way.

About a month later the little lady came in to his shop.

"And how did you like your holiday?" the travel agent asked eagerly.

"The flight was exciting and the room was lovely," she said. "I've
come to thank you. But, one thing puzzled me."

"What would that be?" asked the travel agent.

"Who was that old guy I had to share the room with?"
