. Need to know.
Margaret  Smith-Slingerland sends us this information -
Subject: Payment of airport fee at Moncton
The following is for information purposes:
I am just back from a short trip to Moncton. I have read in the
NetLetter that the airport fee will be deducted from our cheque. In
Moncton it is required that the $10.00 fee be paid up front there.
Margaret Smith-Slingerland

Standby baggage checked to connection points only. Employees should be advised
that due to heightened airport security, baggage for all standby passengers
will
be checked to connection points only. As a result, it is recommended that you
allow yourself some extra time between flights to claim your baggage and
re-check to your next destination.

From Employee Communications -
Express Check-in kiosks are back! As the Thanksgiving holiday weekend
approaches, Air Canada is pleased to announce that the Express Check-in kiosks
are back in operation following a security upgrade. All active and retired
employees and pass-eligible travellers must use the kiosks to check in, where
available.

People with diabetes need doctor's letter when flying. As a result of
increased
security at Canadian airports, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Air
Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) are advising people with diabetes to
obtain a letter from their doctor prior to air travel. ATAC advises passengers
with diabetes carrying insulin, syringes or other diabetes-related material to
present a doctor's letter describing the medication and medical devices in
their
possession. Passengers will be required to present this letter as well as their

medication at security screening points at Canadian airports.

From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
Currently, Air Canada is working frantically to produce a new "revised" winter
flying schedule. It is expected to be distributed internally this coming week,
and in the public domain sometime after. Many routes will see reduced
frequencies and some will be cut altogether. Toronto-Cincinnati is expected to
be one route, as well as Toronto-Munich and Toronto-Copenhagen. Last flight to
Munich will be October 20th. Last flight to Copenhagen will be October 26th.
The once-daily Vancouver-Washington-IAD A319 will be dropped after October 12th
and the Vancouver-Miami A319 will be dis-continued after October 19th.

. Gord Dalziel sends us this note -
Welcome Back Terry ! ! !
Vesta, I believe you do an excellent job of Keeping the
Newsletters going, through the periods of time, when your
Co-Pilot takes off on you. Keep up the Good Work.
Both June and I enjoy reading your Netletters.
Folks, I have an other request of the Two of You.
It concern's Brian Dunn. Brian, and I go back a number of
years at YYZ Apt. As you may know, he has had a Life Time
Interest in Aviation and Recording / Logging Aircrafts from
around the whole world. It is through this he has developed
and maintains a large network of friends and colleagues in
the industry.
I do believe he does a Very Good Job of Keeping us up to date
on the Ever - Changing Industry along with what's happening at
Toronto Airport.
Recently, Brian tells me that he now has 980 on his mailing list
for his YYZ NEWS notes. I know that is because of his love
and devotion to the Airline Industry.
I would ask, that IF you both feel it possible, could you
write a " Thanks for your Effort, with YYZ NEWS Brian "
in one of your up coming NetLetters.
Between the your Netletters and Brian's YYZ NEWS Letter's,
I believe us Retiree's are well informed. When you add to this the
Effort's our Pionairs are doing, we have to be the
" Best Informed Airline Retiree's Group in the World ".
Efforts, like these MUST be Recognized, by us Retiree's.
Please use any or all of the Above, but Please take a portion of
your Newsletter, to give yourselves a " Pat on the Back ",
from us Retiree's, Particular in these very trying times in
our Industry.................
Gord Dalziel ---- Ex A. C.--YYZ Airport.
(We, at the NetLetter, are more than happy to acknowledge the information
available through
the YYZNEWS which Brian issues frequently and for allowing us to pass along
some of the
information to our readers. Those of you who would like to get on the mailing
list for their own copy of the YYZNEWS, Brian would be more than happy to
accommodate you at

Subject: Summary - 24 Sep  luncheon at the Canada Aviation Museum

It started out a beautiful sun-filled September day as approximately 185
Pionairs from the Quebec- and Eastern Ontario districts descended upon the
Canada Aviation Museum here in Ottawa.
This was our 2nd joint luncheon, and a day we had planned to be a 'day with a
difference'.
The museum, which is closed to the general public on Monday's, opened its doors
to our group at 10 a.m.. Following check-in, guests were encouraged to join
guided tours which were provided courtesy of the museum's volunteer staff. And
there was lots to look at, including 120 aircraft plus numerous special
exhibits.
A buffet lunch was served at 12:00, right in the middle of the exhibition hall
where guests were seated next to planes like the Lockheed 10A Electra (TCA's
first airliner), the DC-3, a Boeing 247D and even a beautifully restored Avro
Lancaster, some of which flew for TCA during WW2 bringing VIP's and mail across
the Atlantic. The excellent hot & cold buffet was prepared by Mr Keith's
Banquet and Catering.
As usual, numerous door prizes were awarded, and a special raffle was held with
prizes of $25, $50 & $100, in addition to which was a special prize of a lunch
for two at the Marriott Hotel's Merlot restaurant here in downtown Ottawa.

List of winners and their prizes.

Door Prizes.

Golf shirts. Cy McDonald & Bob Robbins
Golf hats.   Jack Russell & Jack McGuire
TCA cap (compliments of Ilene Pedwell, YOW). Claire Speed
Books (donated and presented by author Ross Smyth).
Claire Levasseur & Gilles Vaillancourt
Computer Pad & luggage tag. Sofia Vandersteen & Jenny Smyth
Books. (donated by Lloyd Wedge). Walter Layzell & Donald                 McKay.
"Dreams Take Flight" shirts. Alf Ross, Jacque Dallaire, Art Scott.

Raffle Prizes.

$25 Cash.    G. Hykle
$50 Cash     Jean Cavanagh
$100 Cash   Doreen Pearce
Luncheon for two at the Ottawa Mariott Hotel. Glee Shapiro.

Guest speaker was Mr. Christopher Terry, Chairperson of the Aviation Museum
Group. Mr Terry's address focused on the upcoming expansion of the museum, now
made possible through a $20 million allocation by the Federal Government. This
money will enable the construction of phase II of the museum's three-phase
completion project, and in particular, will make it possible to put a roof over
the seven airplanes which have been sitting outside on the tarmac, - some for
more than 30 years! Amongst them are an ex-TCA Viscount, fin # 627 (donated by
Air Canada) and the only remaining North Star in the world. All airplanes will
require extensive restoration, plans for which are now underway. In the case of
the ex-RCAF North Star (another historically important aircraft to Air Canada)
a special interest group from the RCAF are looking into ways of supporting that
restoration project. Also addressed by Mr Terry is the upcoming 100th
anniversary of manned flight, which will take place in 2003. Special events are
being planned at the Canada Aviation Museum in recognition of this milestone.
Also mentioned by Mr Terry, is the importance that volunteer work has for more
and more organizations (this is the year of the Volunteer), and the CAM, for
one, could not possibly entertain its ambitious plans, were it not for its
volunteers!
More guided tours were conducted after lunch, with the last one finishing only
at 15:45. Interest in the museum exhibits was visibly high, and there is
already talk that future get-togethers may take place there.

Photographs were taken throughout the event, compliments of Montreal's Ed
Leckett, and can soon be seen on the Pionairs website.
Go to  www.pionairs.ca , districts/Eastern Ontario.

It was rewarding to see so many contacts re-established between friends and
former colleagues during this event. The day was a success thanks to the hard
work of the joint organizing committee, and a 'special mention' goes to Ilene
Pedwell (who couldn't come due to sickness), Bruce Wanamaker & Mae Wilson who
handled the registrations and the money, plus my counterpart from the Quebec
District, Keith Kelly who took care of the draws.

The event finished at 4 pm, and, as if on cue, strong rain commenced!
Many a smiling face could be seen, though, as the Pionairs made their way
through the exits. heading for home.

It was wonderful having you here, and we hope to see you again, soon.

. Remember when?
Capt. Rosella Bjornson B737 Canadian Airlines was the first female to fly
jets for a major airline in north America in 1973. Rosella later became
Canada's first female captain of a major airline.
First Officer Glenys Robinson - DC9 was, in 1995, the youngest female pilot
ever hired by Air Canada, joining in 1980 at age 21 years.

On May 10th 1941, a Lockheed Lodestar L1808inaugurated the Toronto to New
York (LaGuadia) route. On board was C.D.Howe, Minister of Transport and
H.J.Symington, President of Trans-Canada Air Lines.

. Ted Tierney sends another saga from Belfast -
c1956, dead of winter...Circumstance, a general snow blanket over North
America. Mass aircraft divertions to alternate airports, Dorval being
one.....Location No 3 hangar....."Tierney, over to transat, Air France toot
sweet". Situation, horizontal gusting sleet pellts...stinging, very. Aircraft
double parked. Pedestrians striding a few steps, heads turned away from the
wind, turning occasionally in fear of oncoming vehicles from behind. Air France
newly arrived in outer lane. On leaving the A.F. office complete with check
sheet noticed one of our guys in dire trouble. As an Operator of a sewage
tanker he was vainly trying to attach the (U.S. made) sewage duct flange to the
corresponding airplane flange and guess what ? No dice! He was standing on a
top corner of his tank and began looking furtively N S E and W in the semi dark
and for good reason. With the airplane flange wide open to high heaven he took
a leap off the tank, pulling "the chain" all in one go. But all was not plain
sailing, for although (he may have had previous experience?) he just failed to
clear the tank bodily.,,,, OOOOuch! With all you know what on the tarmac. Gosh
I laughed ...and laughed...an lau......."Crikey, what was that?" for as turned
into the wind and my mouth open * WHAT THE HECK was THAT* that hit me in the
teeth? So I spat......and spat..........and spat. Later, home in bed the whole
bed was vibrating like a jackhammer I can tell you. With French/ German/
Italian/Greek admixtures, who can blame me from sticking to MacDonalds
nowadays. Hope you had fun reading this as I do in the telling, all true bill.
If Ted's  collegue would like to own up, Ted would be happy to hear from him.
Thanks for your interest...Ted.

.   Vesta sends this from the flight deck
On a good note, the following press release was issued by British Airways
on September 27th;
"Dear People of Halifax,
How do you thank an entire city?
Those were the words from one of our flight crew on returning from
Halifax after the tragic events in New York on the 11th of September.
We represent our colleagues at British Airways, particularly all the
flight and cabin crew as well as our passengers, who were so warmly and
generously looked after by the people of Halifax.
We have both heard many stories of your generosity and hospitality
which you extended so unreservedly to your unexpected visitors and on behalf
of British Airways we would like to extend our sincere thanks.
Signed by Lloyd Cromwell Griffiths --Director of Flight Operations
and by Joy Hordern---General Manager, Cabin Services"

Tips for the photgrapher -
Before leaving for your vacation take a full roll pf photographs to
ensure you know how to
use your camera and that it is working. A good time to review your
manual.
If using a digital camera ensure you have enough memory cards or that
there will be a lab
that can download the images and email it to your computer or burn
a CD.
When taking pictures:
- before you press the shutter check that the horizon is straight.
- check the edges of the frame and remove any unwanted elements
- move closer to your subject.
- get people out of the centre of the frame.
