From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
.some of the changes to the winter schedule include switching from F-28s to
CRJs on the Toronto-Minneapolis route effective November 4th,
three A319s per business day between YYZ and Washington-IAD,
and re-introduction of service to Washington-DCA airport on 18 Nov with two
CRJs
and three A319s per day.
The Toronto to Indianapolis route has already switched over to using two CRJs
per day from F-28s.
The Toronto-Mexico City route has been upgraded to a daily Boeing 767 from an
A319 for the winter period.
An article by Peter Fitzpatrick in the National Post today talks about Air
Canada launching another "new" airline, possibly called Jetz to serve sports
teams. In lieu of Skyservice's Sporthawk venture going bankrupt, Air Canada has
already re-configured one of its Boeing 737s (C-GCPV FIN517) down to 48 J-class
seats. This airplane ferried from Vancouver to YYZ on the morning of 29 October
to operate on behalf of the Toronto Raptors a charter to Orlando that
afternoon. It will take the team from Orlando to Miami after tonight's game is
over, then bring them from Miami to YYZ on November 1st. This aircraft is
expected to be used by other sport teams as well as the NBA. Air Canada is
expected to dedicate particular flight attendants and pilots to operate this
aircraft and possibly additional 737s if negotiations with their respective
Unions are successful.

. Our Chief Pilot - Vesta, caught this clip -
this is a clip from Mansbridge's National News
Tues., Oct. 30, 2001 - 6 p.m. ET
"We know who you are Mr Mansbridge but we still need to see your photo
ID"
Yes, things have changed at the airport.
Catching my flight to Ottawa I gave myself lots of time
...I arrived more than an hour before flight time. But twice in the
following forty-five minutes I was asked by Air Canada agents, who
clearly knew who I was, to prove to them I really was who my ticket said
I was. And you know, it didn't bother me one bit.
And it didn't seem to bother anyone else put through the same
questioning either.
Just one of the many ways a new sense and a new era of security has
changed our lives....whether in air travel, highrise living, immigration
policy, or the ability to deal with a bioterrorist threat.........

This one too!
Christian Science Monitor -- The next time you fly, take a
peek at your luggage after it tumbles down the chute at the
baggage claim. You may find a fresh paw print or two. That's
because teams of dogs are standing watch at many airports
helping to keep you safe. Take Lenny, for instance. He's a
black Labrador retriever on duty at Boston's Logan
International Airport. Lenny is one of 174 bomb-sniffing
dogs nationwide. The Federal Aviation Administration's bomb
dogs are on duty at 39 airports. The dogs sniff unattended
suitcases and suspicious packages, nose vehicles left at the
curb, search terminals after bomb threats, check passenger
areas and parking garages, and scour aircraft.

. Found on the internet.
Ailing Airlines Close Clubs, Ticket Offices
Washington Post -- As part of their ongoing cost-cutting
efforts, several of the major airlines are now closing the
doors of city ticket offices and several airport lounges
across the country. US Airways is closing 40 city ticket
offices, leaving only 16 -- including all four Washington
area locations -- open. The airline is also closing five
of its airport lounges -- two at Pittsburgh International
Airport and one each in Cleveland, Newark and Charlotte.
American Airlines will close 100 of its 107 city ticket
offices and 50 Admiral's Clubs. United Airlines will
close 32 of its 87 city ticket offices. United also
closed its Red Carpet airport clubs at JFK, ATL, SFO
ORD and others. Delta is closing 10 of its Crown Room
Clubs and 35 of its ticket offices.

. Air Canada news from YYZNEWS issued by brian Dunn Nov 2nd.
Air Canada officially launched its new jet charter business called "AC
Jetz" to
meet the special travel needs of sports teams and corporate clients. The
airline has already converted two Boeing 737s into a 48-J class seating
arrangement, 2X2 seating. Two additional Boeing 737s may be converted shortly
once specific team contracts have been signed. This will keep some pilots and
flight attendants busy that might otherwise have been laid off. The first 737
charter was operated on behalf of the Toronto Raptors NBA team this week flying
them to Orlando, then Miami, before returning to Toronto yesterday.

. Star Alliance news -
UAL Posts Worst Loss in Its History
United Airlines said it lost $1.16 billion in
the third quarter - the worst quarterly loss in its 75-year
history.  The UAL loss
includes $865 million in special charges related to the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which included two United planes
and caused a steep dropoff in U.S. air travel. United, the
nation's second-largest carrier, already was deeply troubled
before the attacks, suffering from the industry's highest labor
and operating costs and an economy-caused falloff in business
travel, on which it depends heavily.

. Terry's travel tips.
The FIDS (Flight Information Display Screen) at Toronto Pearson now show
flights under the destination arranged alphabetical - much easier to
understand, most travellers know where they are going not necessarily the
flight number.

The headrest on the A340 Airbus ( at least)  are such that they can be
adjusted to stop your head rolling into some strangers shoulder when you nod
off - saves taking those blow up pillows.

. Smilie.
From: "edward tierney" <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
Sunny day at the Dorval ramp.Viscount at gate awaiting despatch back to the
hangar. As a Category 1 mechanic jouncing heavily up the steps am met by the
passenger door being pushed open with a man in - - - uniform rushing out past
me head turned away with a hand to his face.
Gosh, didn't know my BO was that bad.
Jouncing up further the door bursts open again and a female in - - - uniform
rushes out past me head turned with hand to face. Right---That's IT. The tub
for you tonight ye boyo! Lucky for me there was no one else in the plane at the
time. Anon

There was the routine advice to Viscount passengers to take note of the
overwing emergency exits via the large oval windows. The windows having to be
pulled inboard but only at the appropriate moment.
These windows were normally retained in place, each by 4 retractable pivots
tipped by chromium plated bolt heads which were preset to maintain each window
securely sealed in place. The aircraft once pressurised held the windows sealed
securely regardless of these retaining pivots.
However during service one might notice the slightest incoming
draught.....until engine start up. In turn this meant that occasionally one
would notice fine particles of snow penetrating into the cabin.
On one occasion having to board with the logbook and pushing through passengers
seated and otherwise saw this lady brushing snow from her hair. Spotting my red
cap and coveralls the lady enquired "Why the snow?" Reply, "prepressurisation
precipitation" as I hurried out.
anon.
