Good morning Robert,
Attached is a copy of the letter sent to your office Monday specifically
asking if "children of the retiree and their spouses could travel
unaccompanied on partner passes ?"
The letter then identifies them as well experienced pass travellers
familiar with behavior and dress code requirements. As they have "grown
up" in this travel environment, I suggest that they be excluded from
requiring the employee or spouse ie: mom or dad, having to accompany
them.
Would your office consider that this is a valid exception ?

Subject: Re: Partner Passes.
Good afternoon Gus
Thank you for your comments.
One of the primary reasons partner program changes are being
implemented is to help reduce the operation problems that result when
large number of nonrevenue customers that are being stranded.
Our reduced capacity and increased load factors results in hundreds of
C5's are being stranded or left behind across the system everyday. We
have examples of C5's waiting for up to 7 days to get out of HNL. Last
month there were over 300 C5's waiting to travel eastbound from
Vancouver.
We issued over 500,000 partner trips this year.
40% - 50% of the nonrevenues on flights today are unaccompanied C5's.
Increased security and the need for positive baggage match creates a
tremendous burden on airports as they try to load non revenue baggage
for those that are being cleared at the last minute.
On time performance and flight delays are being encountered everyday as we
process the loading of nonrevenues - many of which are C5 unaccompanied guests.

At least one major US Airline is contemplating the complete cancellation of
its
partner program including accompanied partners. Most other carriers require
that
employees and retirees accompany their guests at all times. Unaccompanied
partner travel is the exception.
Non dependent children are eligible to purchase Family Affair tickets. I
realize
this is more costly but it also allows them to travel on a confirmed basis.
Our goal with this recent policy change is aimed at creating a partner program
that is sustainable over time. We realize we will never create a policy that
meets everyone's needs and expectations.
I appreciate your comments and hope this note helps explain why these changes
are being implemented.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
There’s a new website coming to town on Monday,
www.achorizons.ca. As the name suggests, we have created an
online version of Horizons, accessible from any location where
you can connect to the Internet your home, Internet cafés,
hotels, etc. But it’s more than just Horizons. The Daily,
President’s Message and FLASH are there as well. Content is
more timely than the paper version, and is continuously updated.
It has a library of images for downloading, and you can
subscribe to have various employee publications sent right to
your e-mail. We will have online discussion forums allowing
you to voice your opinion and submit story ideas to Horizons.
The site links to Aeronet our internal Intranet site for employees
connecting to achorizons from their office computer.

Saw this in the Technical Services (formerly knonw as Technical
Operations) Weekly Hot Sheet (dated November 15) -

Santa’s Helpers Call For Donations
A small group of Tech Services retirees who rebuild and clean donated
goods year-round for charities across Canada need your help. They’ve
been applying their trade skills to the cause for more than seven years
and have given new life to thousands of toys and small appliances.
With Christmas around the corner, they are asking employees to donate
goods of any condition via two large, blue drop-off bins outside the
east and west entrances of the Vancouver Ops Centre.
The group also welcomes any Air Canada retirees who’d like to take part
in the program. To get involved, contact George Lewis at (604) 943-1092.

. From our Chief Pilot - Vesta, on the flight deck!
STRANDED AMERICANS WILL RETURN TO NFLD: CELLUCCI
Washington's representative in Canada gushed with gratitude on Tuesday
for the way Newfoundlanders treated U.S. citizens on Sept. 11 and in the
following days.

*** Sonic gun could stun hijackers
The Times -- A STUN gun that fires “sonic bullets” could
soon be used to protect passenger aircraft against hijack.
The device produces a burst of sound that is strong enough
to leave its target stunned and disorientated without
generating enough energy to damage the fuselage or
windows of an aircraft. It produces a pulse of sound at
over 140 decibels for a couple of seconds — well beyond
the 120 decibel threshold at which sound becomes painful
and would work at a range of 100 yards, according to
American Technologies.

Subject: VIRUS PROBLEM
From one of our readers via RAPCAN.
After receiving messages from some of my E-mail friends who advised that
my computer had a virus, I took the computer to the Multi-Media Computer
store down the street to have it repaired.
RESULT:
The young oriental gentleman found and removed 48 infections of "magistr"
and one infection of "pretty park". He reinstalled the required protocols
for networking.
My files are still intact.
Some time ago I had installed a Norton Anti-Virus system but I was
negligent in not keeping it up-dated on a regular basis. The technician
gave me a lecture about this and mentioned the importance of up-dating. He
said that as we speak, there will be someone out there creating another
Virus. He suggested that I install NORTON 2002 rather than try to update my
old version and and he convinced me to keep up-dating it frequently -- SOLD.

AMELIA EARHART EXPEDITION GOES HIGH-TECH: Finding Amelia Earhart's lost
airplane has become a technologically advanced haystack search. Media
entrepreneur Mike Kammerer announced that his In Search of Amelia
Earhart LLC, will be sending a state-of-the-art underwater autonomous
vehicle (ARGUS) into the equatorial Pacific Ocean to find the famed
aviator's Lockheed Electra 10E. The missing airplane has long been
suspected of residing near tiny Howland Island in the Pacific and
the expedition has marked a search area in nearby waters.

. Star Alliance news -
Industry news:
Thai Airways Joins In On Cutbacks. According to Airwise News, Thai Airways
will close seven offices in the US and Canada, effective immediately. The
offices affected are in Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Washington
DC, New York and Toronto. The Los Angeles office will remain open. As of
Nov. 21, the airline will cut one of its seven weekly flights from Bangkok
to Los Angeles - its only flight to the US. Other cost cutting measures
include reducing public relations and office expenses, a review of overtime
and a delay in any investments that will not generate immediate income.
These decisions stem from poor exchange rates and rising costs, especially
since Sept. 11 and the decline in air travel.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
Air Canada's new sports charter division called AC Jetz is starting to
take-off
with numerous bookings for the Raptors basketball team, the Maple Leafs and
Edmonton Oilers hockey as well as adhoc work for some U.S. teams. Two Boeing
737s have already been converted into 48 business class seats (2 X 2) with two
more 737s in the works. With this new charter activity these aircraft have
already been seen in some airports for the first time ( or will be in the next
couple of months ). Places like Chicago-MDW (29/30Nov), Pontiac MI (PTK) on 14
January, Ellington Field/Houston (EFD) on March 4th, Memphis (MEM) on January
7th, and Cleveland-Lakefront airport (BKL) on February 11th to name a few. Last
week the Raptors used the old Mather AFB at Sacramento (MHR) rather than the
municipal airport for their one-day visit. The aircraft then took them to
Oakland (OAK), then on to Los Angeles (LAX) and then to Phoenix (PHX).
