FRANCE selected Chaulnes (125 km north of Paris) as site for third
Paris-area airport for 2020. It also approved FF5b to develop 10 regional
airports in area by 2010, and plans to tighten noise limits/night
operations at CDG.

VIRGIN BLUE retained Goldman Sachs to advise on sale of minority (possibly
majority) stake to help finance expansion from 12 to 30 737s. It is also
considering placing joint bid with LANG, Australia to acquire ANSETT.

UK approved construction of 370,000 sq m Terminal 5 (T5) at Heathrow to
handle 30m pax per year starting in 2007, and placed limit of 480,000
annual flights at airport (460,000 in 2000). LHR will then have 90m pax
capacity vs 64.3m in 2000.

We thought you might be interested in this -- an excerpt from Pan Am sales
literature in 1964:
Ariana Routes Open Afghanistan to Tourism
... A nation where few travelers have trod, this Moslem monarchy, deep in
the heart of Central Asia, offers many rewards to those who can face life
without ice water, dial telephones and inner spring mattresses.
Although the sightseer is a novelty in Afghanistan today, the time is not
far off when the country will take its place on the tourist trail. A
technical revolution is underway to lift the land out of the Dark Ages into
the 20th Century. Tribal customs and feudal laws are being cast aside, new
schools are going up, roads are being paved, hotels and airports are being
built with aid from both East and West.
American Cafeteria in Kabul.
A modern highway, driven through the historic Khyber Pass, winds up from
the Pakistan border to the capital city of Kabul. Remote outposts, once the
domain of nomadic tribes, are now linked with the capital by Ariana Afghan
Airlines, assisted by Pan Am under a technical assistance program.
Passengers from abroad find that Teheran, served by Pan Am Jet Clippers, is
a convenient connection point for Ariana flights direct to Kabul.
The Afghan capital, tucked high in the Hindu Kush Mountains, is a colorful
city of tiled mosques, a royal palace and Persian gardens in the suburbs.
Trading is brisk in the old bazaar with bargains galore in hand-tied
carpets, Karakul skins and hats, old coins, guns and postage stamps. Most
merchants speak English or German, since few outsiders speak the native
tongues, Pushto and Farsee, related in a complex way to ancient Persian.
The people of Kabul reflect the heritage of the past invaders from the
blue-eyed Greeks of Alexander the Great to the slant-eyed Mongols of
Genghis Khan. The men wear pastel turbans with bright streamers of frothy
silk hanging down the back. Although some women in Kabul are now going in
for western dress, most Moslem ladies are veiled from head to toe in
tent-like garments with embroidered peep-holes at eye-level.
There are at present just two hotels in the capital - The Kabul and The
Ariana, both offering comfortable accommodations at reasonable rates. The
one good eating place for outsiders is known simply as the Cafeteria,
operated , by natives who studied in the United States. The Afghan cuisine
runs to rice, chicken and lamb kebabs. The fruit is delicious, especially
the melons which come in some 40 varieties.
Visitors in Kabul can rent cars to explore the scenic and historic wonders
of the land, notable the giant Buddhas at Bamyan and the blue lakes at
Band-i-Amir in the Himalayas. The drive north to Bamyan leads into lush
valley some 8,000 feet above sea level, once a favorite stopover for camel
caravans following the fabled Silk Route threading east from the
Mediterranean to India.
An hour and a half by road from Bamyan and a total of 154 miles north of
Kabul is Band-i-Amir, the scenic gem of the land with its lakes cradled
among the peaks of the Himalayas.

The unkindest cut.
On a recent Air Canada flight to Germany I was told to dispense with the
disposable razor and blades packed in my day bag.
As instructed, I dutifully placed the lethal objects into a garbage can in
front of the check-in attendant.
It was with great surprise that, upon reaching my business-class seat, I
was presented with a full travel kit, including disposal razor and blade. It
never occurred to me that terrorists don't fly business class.
