Although we concluded what the press called the "cognac agreement" it resulted in wildcat walkouts by the IAM, forcing Claude Taylor to shut down Air Canada.for three days.

Louise Garneau sent us this information - 

On July 5th 2012 Bill Marr celebrated his 95th birthday. He spent 43 years as a pilot, 40 of them with T.C.A./A.C  and retired in 1977. Bill Marr was born in England on July 4, 1917, but his official birth date is July 5, as his father insisted that he didn't want his son born on the 4th of July, U.S. Independence Day.

In NetLetter nr 1195, we had information regarding the original TCA insignia and the iconic Speedbird emblem, which Imperial Airways of the U.K. adopted in 1924 and was later transferred to B.O.A.C. This is some of the emails from Jim Bruce on the subject -

The speed bird logo on the TCA logo was there for a very short time as B.O.A.C. made TCA take it off. But I guess that's common knowledge. It's interesting that on the fuel truck, it appears on the wheel cover.  Never noticed that before. 

 Ralph and Stuart Hay were cousins of my Mother, and were among the first TCA employees. They had previously started a flying club (April 1937). Among their aircraft was a J-2 Cub bought in Hamilton and flown to Calgary by Stuart.

One Clifford Locke rented the Cub and had a passenger Edith Webster. Tragically, Locke stalled the aircraft and it nosed in killing both occupants. The Cub couldn't be repaired and wasn't insured, so they had to give up the business. I guess it was shortly after this that the brothers joined TCA. (From Bruce Gowan's book "Wings Over Calgary", p.131-132.)

Our family used to have Christmas dinner with Stuart and Ethel Hay and their family.

Lisbon anniversaries honored

Though no longer an on-line destination, Canadian's. Lisbon sales office is still very much alive and producing off-line revenues.

At a recent service pin presentation were, from left. Joao Graia, sales agent, 20 years, Alfredo DaCosta, sales agent, 30 years, Marcela Faro, 30 years (retired) with Isabel Gross, secretary, and Rene Syrenne, general manager, Benelux and Iberian Peninsula.

Canadian Airlines' Quebec City sales staff held a "sales blitz" recently, dressing up and visiting travel agents throughout the city to promote Canadian's Increased services to Quebec City.

Participating In the sales blitz were, from left, Gilles Rozon,  Pierre Bourget, Giullo Padulo, Lionel Jonthe, Pierre Marzioumian, Andre Durocher,  Linda Aucoin, Roger Cuillerler, Josee Fournier, Jean-Paul Varnatls, Linda Lee, Gordon Addleman, Stephanie Bishop,  Paul Pelletier, and Deborah Bourque.

Copenhagen staffers celebrate a successful representation for Canadian Airlines International at Copenhagen's recent Refs '87 Tourism and Trade Travel Fair.

Sometimes we receive articles and information that just doesn't fit in our other areas. This is where it goes!

On May 1st 1927, Imperial Airways, the predecessor to British Airways, introduced the "Silver Wing", in-flight meal service on its London to Paris route. utilizing the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy equipment, thus becoming the first on a commercial aircraft. A male steward dressed in a smart white tunic on the two and a half hour flight. served just 18 passengers.

The service represented the height of luxury at the time - 85 years ago.

In 1928, Lufthansa aka Luft Hansa, began taking delivery of the Junkers G31. The cabins were divided into three sections by semi bulkheads, normally to accommodate 15 passengers and the windows could be cranked open! .(Probably saved on sick bags - eds)

Please also remember that some stations including Madrid and Zurich do not have Employee Ticketing facilities. Other airlines will be experiencing similar volumes, so don't be caught waiting for days - be prepared! Also when traveling, please remember all employees are expected to check-in on the web or at the kiosks where available

 This Dave Mathias cartoon appeared in "Between Ourselves" issued August 1962.

 Robert Arnold found this in his collection and thought he would send it along. It is from the Winnipeg Free Press dated May 1975. If he remembers correctly, the Canadian  government of the day was in the process of replacing the CL-28 Argus with the Lockheed Orion as our new coastal anti-sub hunter. Of course cost was an issue. Robert  thinks the cartoon says it all as a possible suggestion for a replacement. Interesting replacement though. (Robert W. Arnold Collection).

During an exchange of emails regarding this cartoon we have these comments - Jack Stephens adds this comment upon seeing this cartoon.- I suspect the Free Press was influenced by the long fight to keep the Winnipeg Overhaul Base open.  Winnipeg lost the battle and also lost hundreds of TCA/Air Canada employees to Montreal. In May 1975, there were many Viscounts parked at the airport awaiting their fate. Perhaps many in Winnipeg, seriously asked the question: "Why can't the Viscount be modified to replace the Argus?" I wonder how many saw the humour in this cartoon?

Jim Bruce tells us that the cartoon is by Jan Kamienski, whom I remember well as the Wpg Tribune's editorial cartoonist from 1958-1980. I did a part-time stint as sports cartoonist at the Tribune in the mid-1950's for Sports Editor Jack Meek and his assistant, Jack Matheson.
