Image Blank 200px Del Horn has sent us this photo of the O'Sullivan's Lethbridge Native Sons, the Alberta - BC Champions - 1946-7 who
chartered a TCA DC-3 for their Pacific Coast Tour in January 1948. The picture was given to me by my "walking" partner George Cottle.  George is a long time (all his life) resident of Nanaimo, he played hockey for many years and played with some of the Hockey players in the picture.  Only one made it to the NHL (for a very brief period) and that was E. Dorohoy   Several played for the Nanaimo Clippers. (McLean, Holmes & Murphy).

Image Blank 200px Norm Foster sends this newspaper photo and this comment -

Although we concluded what the press called the "cognac agreement" it resulted in wildcat walkouts by the IAM, forcing Claude Taylor to shut down Air Canada.for three days.

TCA/Air Canada LogoBelow we have musings from the "Between Ourselves" and "Horizons" magazine, Air Canada publications from years gone by, as well as various in-house publications.

The NetLetter has been fortunate enough to have our readers donate vintage Trans-Canada Air Lines and Air Canada publications from as far back as 1941 to share with you. These have been scanned and are being prepared for presenting in a special area of the ACFamily Network for archival and genealogy research.

Image Blank 200px Louise Garneau sent us this information -

On July 5th 2012 Bill Marr celebrated his 95th birthday. He spent 43 years as a pilot, 40 of them with T.C.A./A.C  and retired in 1977. Bill Marr was born in England on July 4, 1917, but his official birth date is July 5, as his father insisted that he didn't want his son born on the 4th of July, U.S. Independence Day.

Image Blank 200px In NetLetter nr 1195, we had information regarding the original TCA insignia and the iconic Speedbird emblem, which Imperial Airways of the U.K. adopted in 1924 and was later transferred to B.O.A.C. This is some of the emails from Jim Bruce on the subject -

The speed bird logo on the TCA logo was there for a very short time as B.O.A.C. made TCA take it off. But I guess that's common knowledge. It's interesting that on the fuel truck, it appears on the wheel cover.  Never noticed that before.

Image Blank 200px The Connie is #406 (CF-TGF c/n 4563) and the North Star #213:(CF-TFM c/n 137) I'm not sure what airport that is.

Image Blank 200px The other 3 are taken at Calgary. The Lockheed is #44, I think it's a 14 but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Image Blank 200px The NetLetter checked and this aircraft was Lockheed L18-08a CF-TCV, the aircraft was the subject of this poster.

Image Blank 200px Ralph and Stuart Hay were cousins of my Mother, and were among the first TCA employees. They had previously started a flying club (April 1937). Among their aircraft was a J-2 Cub bought in Hamilton and flown to Calgary by Stuart.

One Clifford Locke rented the Cub and had a passenger Edith Webster. Tragically, Locke stalled the aircraft and it nosed in killing both occupants. The Cub couldn't be repaired and wasn't insured, so they had to give up the business. I guess it was shortly after this that the brothers joined TCA. (From Bruce Gowan's book "Wings Over Calgary", p.131-132.)

Our family used to have Christmas dinner with Stuart and Ethel Hay and their family.

Cheers, Jim

Reader's Feedback
Every week we ask our readers for their stories or feedback on what they have read here in previous issues. Below is the feedback we have received recently.

Jack Stephens refers to his story in NetLetter nr 1213, and sends this comment  -

Another fine NetLetter...
Interesting story of the moving of the Viscount at Winnipeg. A well planned move to be sure!

I wonder how many people will catch my error in the "Kicked Off"
story I wrote. The DC-3 sits with tail down, and so I scrambled
down not up. Let me be the first to take notice.

Michael Leduc got his grey cells working and sends us this memory -
In looking back at TCA/Air Canada, I realized that this upcoming Canada (then Dominion) Day weekend was when, 50 years ago, Trans-Canada Air Lines moved their Headquarters to Place Ville Marie.  Before the move our offices were located in a number of sites in downtown Montreal.  Such places included the International Aviation Building, Terminal Centre Building, Station "B" Post Office (where I was at the time), Dominion Square Building, and the mail room in Central Station.

I was in Station Services at the time and situated on the top, 40th., floor of PVM having a commanding view of Mount Royal and, on a clear day, looking miles down the St. Lawrence River.  Many employees' friends asked and were brought up to see the view atop of what was at the time the largest office building in the Commonwealth. Tempus fugit! All of this is from memory - no photos or articles! Cheers Michael Leduc

In the NetLetter nr 1211 under TCA/AC People Gallery, we had a photo of Grace Humphreys and this prompted a memory which Karen Skinner shares -
Hi, In the latest netletter, I enjoyed seeing the beautiful pic of Grace Humphreys. She had quite an astounding career since 1942. I remember her but did not know her well. I  had coffee with her a few times in our daily routine coffee group.  I worked in the airport 1968-1993. She aged gracefully over the years of employment & always took pride in the Air Canada uniform that she wore. Do you know when she retired? She was a lovely person & it brought back memories of that time. I am unaware whether or not she is still living. Thx for sharing.

Regards, Karen Skinner

Image Blank 200pxFirst day cover for the Concorde aircraft first flight of the prototype at Toulouse March 1st 1969.

Image Blank 200px Here is the layout for YUL, date unknown.

Image Blank 200pxOn May 1st 1927, Imperial Airways, the predecessor to British Airways, introduced the "Silver Wing", in-flight meal service on its London to Paris route. utilizing the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy equipment, thus becoming the first on a commercial aircraft. A male steward dressed in a smart white tunic on the two and a half hour flight. served just 18 passengers.

The service represented the height of luxury at the time - 85 years ago.

Image Blank 200pxIn 1928, Lufthansa aka Luft Hansa, began taking delivery of the Junkers G31. The cabins were divided into three sections by semi bulkheads, normally to accommodate 15 passengers and the windows could be cranked open! .(Probably saved on sick bags - eds)

Smileys - Compiled by Terry Baker
Smileys
As we surf the internet and back issues of airline magazines we regularly find airline related jokes and cartoons. Below is our latest discovery.

Sign on the wall of the office responsible for arranging the flights for the British royal family states "NOBODY IS PERFECT - EXCEPT THE CAPTAIN"

Over the past years, we have had cartoons extracted from various "Between Ourselves" created by Dave Mathias.
Dave's first was a caricature of an associate Webb Heenan, which appeared in the issue dated April 1943.

Image Blank 200px This Dave Mathias cartoon appeared in "Between Ourselves" issued August 1962.

Image Blank 200px Robert Arnold found this in his collection and thought he would send it along. It is from the Winnipeg Free Press dated May 1975. If he remembers correctly, the Canadian  government of the day was in the process of replacing the CL-28 Argus with the Lockheed Orion as our new coastal anti-sub hunter. Of course cost was an issue. Robert  thinks the cartoon says it all as a possible suggestion for a replacement. Interesting replacement though. (Robert W. Arnold Collection).
Hope everyone enjoys the humour.Regards.Robert.

During an exchange of emails regarding this cartoon we have these comments - Jack Stephens adds this comment upon seeing this cartoon.- I suspect the Free Press was influenced by the long fight to keep the Winnipeg Overhaul Base open.  Winnipeg lost the battle and also lost hundreds of TCA/Air Canada employees to Montreal. In May 1975, there were many Viscounts parked at the airport awaiting their fate. Perhaps many in Winnipeg, seriously asked the question: "Why can't the Viscount be modified to replace the Argus?" I wonder how many saw the humour in this cartoon?

Jim Bruce tells us that the cartoon is by Jan Kamienski, whom I remember well as the Wpg Tribune's editorial cartoonist from 1958-1980. I did a part-time stint as sports cartoonist at the Tribune in the mid-1950's for Sports Editor Jack Meek and his assistant, Jack Matheson.
