About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Dear NetLetter,

Welcome to the 957th issue of "NetLetter". The NetLetter is the longest running newsletter (since 1995) that is dedicated to Air Canada retirees.

We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2743 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends. The "NetLetter" is written by Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker from Vancouver Island (see sidebar) and also with articles and comments from "you" our readers. Formatting of text, photos, etc. for this HTML version is done by Alan Rust and it is published courtesy of the ACFamily Network at www.acfamily.net

  • Urgent Help!
We are producing a handout for AC Call Centres called "Getting to Know You"...it will be the first in a 4 part series highlighting Call Centres around the Globe.
Our first edition focus's on the North & South Pacific.
What I'm looking for is the following:

    • What is our oldest route in the North & South Pacific?
    • When did we start flying there?
    • How long did it take? any stops enroute?
    • What type of aircraft was used?
    • When did we start flying to SYD
    • Again same questions, how long did it take, etc. - When did we (or our predecessors) start flying into Mainland China and which city did we start with?
    • When did we (or our predecessors) start flying into HKG?
    • When did we (or our predecessors) start flying into Japan and which city did we start with?
    • When did AC (or our predecessors) stop flying into AKL?

If there's any other tid-bit's of info on the NOP/SOP routes that you think might be suitable I would welcome the details.

Many thanks for all your advice,
    Dorothy Macdonald

Regarding the article in NetLetter nr 956 -
Stuart Russell sends us this information -
Thanks for the netletter - re the airport names I believe Mike Zubko International Airport in Inuvik NWT CYEV was one of the first " named airports " in Canada, even though it is a long way from the rest of the country.
Mike Zubko had his own airline at the time when the town of Inuvik was created out of the bush and was a father figure in the region because he flew everyone in and out.
As you can see from the photo, some days are quite snowy there!!
    Thanks,
    Stu "Stuart Russell"

Dont forget Jack Dunwoody who later moved to YAM and it was a fun station I worked there as relief Station Agent II for a week and both flights North and South arrived and departed within a hour. This was when I worked in YVO 1965 till 1967 and that station was something else working out of a wooden shack were the windows rattled as a VOODOO took off and you could not hear yourself talking at the counter and I have still some good memories of those days (without CRT sets) and manual load and balance.

Returning to Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y., on New Year's Day, I heard the following exchange between the tower controller and the pilot of a Piper Arrow:
Arrow: "Republic tower, Arrow Three Four Five, eight miles north, inbound with India."
Tower: "Arrow Three Four Five, report right downwind Runway 32."
Arrow: "Any chance we can get a straight in?"
Tower: "You said you were north didn't you?" Arrow: "Yes, seven miles north."
Tower: "Arrow Three Four Five, the only way I can give you a straight in for Runway 32 is if you turn north and continue for about 24,000 miles." Arrow: (momentary silence) "Uh, okay, sorry, Happy New Year..."
