About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Dear NetLetter,

Welcome to the 956th issue of "NetLetter".

We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2742 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends. The "NetLetter" is written by Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker from Vancouver Island (see sidebar) and also with articles and comments from "you" our readers. It is published courtesy of the ACFamily Network at www.acfamily.net

  • UFO TAKES A LOOK AT O'HARE, RETREATS
If a spaceship were to travel across the vast emptiness of space, enter Earth's atmosphere, and then find itself hovering above the busy ramp at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, can you blame those astronauts for deciding to just turn around and leave, without even stopping to say hello? According to about a dozen United Air Lines workers, including some pilots, that's just what happened one overcast night in November. The observers said they saw a flying elliptical object, dark gray and about 20 feet across, that hovered about 1,000 feet or so above the airport for several minutes about 4:30 p.m. They told their story to the FAA and the airline, who kept it quiet until a Chicago Tribune reporter got a whiff recently and started asking questions. The FAA at first denied any knowledge of the event, but after the Tribune filed a request for documents a record of a telephone call from a United supervisor surfaced.

  • Air Canada believes Fluffy invites sneezy, dopey and docs
The carrier takes an allergy-busting stance on animals on board. But will any others follow suit?
AIR CANADA this fall fired the latest volley in an aerial dogfight: It banned nearly all animals from aircraft cabins, saying they could trigger allergy attacks in susceptible passengers.
Pet lovers aren't taking this lying down. They say the alternative, the cargo hold, is stressful and even deadly for dogs and cats, a view that airlines dispute. (Source Los Angeles Times)

  • Naming Canada's Airports
  • Montreal has Trudeau.
    Toronto has Pearson.
    Ottawa has Macdonald and Cartier.
Even Saskatoon has an airport named after a former prime minister: John Diefenbaker.
    Winnipeg - ???
Aviation pioneer whose name graces our airport was as down-to-earth and giving as the wheat fields that forged the family fortune
But this month when the federal government chose a "commoner's" name to grace Winnipeg's airport, the citizens' reaction was less than enthusiastic, at least, from those who answered a Free Press website poll. An overwhelming 77 per cent of the 1,700 respondents said "No!" when asked if they agreed with renaming Winnipeg International to James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.
He was the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame's choice as "Father of Commercial Aviation in Canada," and the pioneering founder of what would become Canadian Airlines. (Source Winnipeg Free Press)

    Subject: TCA and forgotten Airports

    Earlton YXR

The airport was built in 1937 as part of the Trans Canada Airways system of emergency fields.

Every 100 miles - It began airline service in 1952 on the YUL/YVO/YUY/YXR/YYB/YYZ route first by CPA and then taken over by TCA as part of that trade for MEX in the mid 50's.

Service was discontinued in 1973. At the time, I believe it was the smallest station, passenger wise, in the system One of the TCA Station Managers at YXR was Bill Lucas

Cape approach: "It's some type of microwave installation."
Cessna: "Yup, I see a tower ahead."
Cape approach: "That's the tower I want you to miss. If you fly near that tower, it could ruin all your equipment, and you'll never have anv children." Cessna: "Roger that. Turning now..."
