About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Dear NetLetter,

Welcome to the 944th issue of "NetLetter". We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2732 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

The "NetLetter" is written by Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker from Vancouver Island (see sidebar) and published courtesy of the ACFamily Network at www.acfamily.net

    SpaceShipTwo Gets Its Curtain Call
Richard Branson, the U.K. airline mogul who has joined with Burt Rutan to build spaceships for tourists, unveiled a mockup of SpaceShipTwo last week at the Wired NextFest event in New York City. The ship, as expected, is a larger version of SpaceShipOne. It's designed to carry six passengers and two pilots. It will be carried aloft to about 60,000 feet on a carrier named White Knight Two, then detach and rocket into space at about Mach 4. Virgin Galactic has also launched a spiffy new version of its Web site, with lots of new movies and information about the project. According to the site, flight testing of the prototype is expected to start next year. It was also reported last week that Branson is negotiating with British TV networks to develop a reality show where six contestants will compete for a spot on a ride into space. Branson's first commercial craft will be named the VSS (Virgin SpaceShip) Enterprise, and is expected to be ready to go in early 2009. Space tourists ! will undergo three days of pre-flight preparation. Seats will cost about $200,000 each.

In other space news, Rutan is working with Transformational Space Corporation to build a two-stage vehicle that could reach orbit and would act as a taxi to the International Space Station. And also last week, Jim Benson, founder of SpaceDev (the company that built the rocket motor for SpaceShipOne), said he is starting a new company called Benson Space Co. and aims to be the first to offer space flights for tourism. His Dreamchaser ship looks similar to the space shuttle. It would take off vertically and glide to a runway landing.

Re the article on the North Star in NetLetter nr 943, here’s a timely reminder from Project North Star Association working on the last remaining North Star, 17515 at Canada Aviation Museum that we need more members (only $25 thru 2007) to keep this project going. Currently we only have 116 paid up members which is insufficient to maintain operating costs. Please visit our website at www.projectnorthstar.ca to get membership form and join up this most worthy cause.

    Cheers,

When a student flew from Belfast to Madrid via Manchester the luggage was lost in transit. Not to worry as the airline promised that it had merely missed the plane and that they had traced it and would send on by taxi the next day to the address that the student was staying at. True enough, the luggage arrived the following day and the student was mortified to see that they had stamped "MAN MAD" all over it. Those were the days before the student started working in airlines and learning 3 - letter city codes.
