About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Dear NetLetter,

Welcome to the 937th issue of "NetLetter". We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2727 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

The "NetLetter" is written by Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker from Vancouver Island (see sidebar) and published courtesy of the ACFamily Network at www.acfamily.net

  • Remember when...
  • We are re-running the article from NetLetter 936 to include an image of the stamp referred to -

Remember the North Star? - Visit the web site for Project North Star Association for information regarding the restoration of a North Star at Ottawa Museum.

The stamp above depicting a TCA North Star was issued in Barbados to commemorate Expo 86.

  • Between Ourselves - 1941
  • More from the first issue of the Between Ourselves magazine issued in 1941 - An article headed "We welcome our ladies" provides information regarding the hiring of females to work in the work shops, ramps etc., to replace those employees who had joined the armed forces for the duration of WW11.

The accompanying photo is of Miss Doris Forbes of Winnipeg, one of the first group employed. Through the good offices of Joe Fountain, Publicity Rep in New York, Miss Forbes was one of the most publicized girls on the continent, as women passenger agents were an innovation and TCA's pioneer work in this connection was closely watched by airlines in the United States.

  • In-flight Web surfing takes a step back. The prospects of surfing the Internet and receiving email at 35,000 feet took a knock on Thursday as Boeing said it will wind down its service for offering Internet access on board planes. Although the market may get a boost with newcomers LiveTV and AirCell developing offerings, cost pressures on airlines make it unlikely that on-board Internet access will be widely available soon. Upgrading a plane for Internet service is a complex task, and with fuel prices high, airlines are more focused on keeping costs down rather than offering new, expensive perks.

After six years, Boeing said on Thursday it would shut down its loss-making Connexion unit, which allowed airlines to provide high-speed Internet service to passengers. The satellite-based service, for which Boeing failed to find a buyer, was too costly, and few airlines signed on. Boeing becomes the second large company to withdraw from the in-flight communications market in recent months. In June, Verizon Communications said it was canceling its on-board phone service by the end of the year.
