About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Dear NetLetter,

This is back issue from March 25, 2006 that was published on the ACFamily Network but never sent to the mail list as I was away.

We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2712 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

To get in touch with either the Editor/Pilot or Co- Pilot our email address is still This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

To make changes to your e-mail address or to unsubscribe, please see the links at the bottom of the page for "Update Profile/Email address" and SafeUnsubscribe. This is now automated so that you can remove yourself from the list or change your email address (or name) without our assistance. We will still do this manually if you have any difficulties.

Many of our members are having difficulty finding these links. You will need to scroll to the bottom of the page, the link in similar to the following image. (The image below doesn't work but your links at the bottom will).

Pionair Member - GERRY ARCHAMBEAU's, LIFE HISTORY BOOK

I was fortunate to work with Air Canada as a Lead Station Attendant, from 1967 to my retirement in 1993, after the demise of Canada's railways passenger industry, both CNR & CPR. I had worked on the C N Trains as a Porter.

My new book "A Struggle to Walk with Dignity" has gone far beyond my retirement dreams, as I have had a number of write ups in magazines and a local paper. I thought I should expose my work to our fellow Pionairs and retirees to show that there are many things that one can get involved with in our retirement years.

My book was published by Trafford Publishing of Victoria, BC. I also have a web site www.trafford.com/robots/04-2001.html for you to view, and my phone and fax no. is 1.905.646.0679. Catalogue no. ISBN 1-4120-4194-5, it is also available at the major book stores such as Chapters, Coles etc. My book is a life story about a new immigrant struggling to find his way through many complexities.

    Sincerely, Gerald A. Archambeau

Carol Humphrey sends us this -

RYANAIR introduces sweeping changes to its rules on luggage this week - and the new charges could penalise thousands.

On all flights booked with Ryanair after March 16, passengers will have to pay for every piece of luggage they check into the hold.

Although the weight you can take increases from 15kg to 20kg, you will be charged £2.50 if you check in your suitcase at the time of booking or £5 per item if you do it at the check-in desk.

But a change to Ryanair's rules introduced in January with little fanfare, means you will now no longer be able to pool your luggage allowance with fellow passengers on the same booking.

It means families and couples face the ridiculous task of taking a suitcase per person to avoid paying excess baggage charges. And with Ryanair charging for every suitcase checked into the hold, this increases the airline's revenue.

Unsuspecting travellers are discovering that packing one case for a weekend break lands them in hot water with excess baggage, charged at eight euros £5.50 per kilo.

"One family was told they would have to fork out £36. They emptied their luggage into black binbags provided by Ryanair, then took them on as hand baggage."

This year's inductees include Annette and Géralde Brunelle, -

Annette (1909-1997) and Géralde (born in 1911) Brunelle. Two sisters, members in 1939 of the first air stewardess class in Canada. More than 1000 women applied on the competition held by Trans - Canada Air Lines (now Air Canada), for about only fifteen open positions.
Among hiring conditions, candidates had to be certified nurses, single, with a mandatory resignation clause upon marriage. Starting on 10-passenger Lockheed 10A Electras (unpressurized and unable to fly high enough to avoid bad weather and turbulence), the presence of a nurse as a crewmember helped passengers feel secure and provided expertise to handle discomforting situations, a reality of early commercial flying. Pioneers in their own right, the Brunelle sisters and their colleagues built the foundations of a new profession, essential to later development of commercial aviation.
