NetLetter Archives

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Correction to last weeks NetLetter - It was pointed out by Gordon Woida (the Vancouver District Director for Pionairs) that the Pionairs BC mail list which started in September was actually in place before the NetLetter. It was the BC Pionairs mail list that most likely prompted the Pionairs National to adopt the same format. As he says, "I just wanted you to know I was paying attention".

We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2700 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

Pionairs Helping Pionairs - Two very good reasons to belong to the Pionairs - Recently, two entirely different situations presented themselves to Pionairs.

First, it came to our attention a Widow in Winnipeg misplaced her final separation cheque some 18 years ago. A few weeks ago while sorting out these papers, she discovered the cheque. When she contacted Pension and Estates it seemed unlikely she could get compensation for the almost $2,000.00 dollars involved. Pionairs took on the task and within a week she had her cheque reissued for the full amount. Pionairs say Thank You, Air Canada.

In another incident a Widow from Western Canada had her car broken into while returning from a Winter trip to the U.S.A. It seems her home insurance was due in October just as she was leaving for this Winter stay.
Upon seeking compensation for a couple of laptop computers which were stolen, she quickly learned her home insurance had been cancelled last October. It seems her neighbour, who picked up her mail, signed for a Registered Letter and dropped it into her mailbag thinking nothing in particular about it. Upon her return and the claim to the insurance company ( after some 14 years ) they said -- No you don't have insurance. They went on to say we don't want your business since you didn't pay your premium. An application was made to Johnson Inc. for home insurance and because she had failed to pay her last policy on time, Johnson refused. Pionairs were contacted April 15th, 2005 and today we are happy to hear Johnson Inc., has reconsidered and has accepted her as a new customer. Pionairs say, Thank You, Johnson Inc.

After an intense competition with two European- based organizations, Jeppesen has won the chart and electronic aeronautical data business for both Air Canada and its regional airline subsidiary, Air Canada Jazz.

Not just another aviation book.

I'm a retired member of the ACFamily and have just published a book called "The Big Dipper Route". In the book I recount some of the frightening, amusing and exhilarating experiences I had when I was a young DC-3 Captain for Great Northern Airways in Whitehorse and Inuvik during the late sixties. I tried not to make it just another aviation book but rather an account of how I matured as a pilot and as a man through learning the hard way. I also tried to describe the Arctic in all its beauty and danger plus the interaction between the people who inhabit the north, both First Nations and Whites. Help wanted - Betty Morgan sends this plea

Just wondering if anyone who reads this would remember the presentation film used way back in th '60's called "Mr. Barnaby Sleeps in The Sky" - I would love to get a copy so I could give it to Jack for his 85th birthday. He recalls going to meetings on PEI of the IODE or little church groups and trying to sell them on flying with that film.

Your help would be wonderful.

Accommodations in N. Ireland

I am interested in finding reasonable accommodations in N. Ireland (on the coast), in the vicinity of Belfast. My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September 2005. We will be traveling with two other couples, and we will be in Ireland for approximately two weeks. We could also stay in the Irish Republic, as long as the accommodations are close to the border. Any help from members would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Correction notice#2

With regard to the 24 April Netletter the information on the disposition of DC-8-63, Tail No. 879 Registration (FIX), I believe it was FTIX as all of the DC-8's.from DC-8-41 Tail No. 801 C-FTGA thru to Tail No. 879 C-FTIX, all were C-FT and so on.

It was a pleasure for me to fly DC-8's from 1962 to 1979, they were all good aircraft but the 63 series were finest. I was flying 747's when the Company was using the 70 series DC-8's.

I look forward to receiving the "Netletter". Keep up the good work.

Airbus First Flight Of A380 April 22, 2005

The first flight of the world's biggest airliner, the Airbus A380,as final tests are run on the massive doubledecker with room for over 800 passengers.

Secrecy and a slight delay have fuelled rumours of fires, collapsed landing gear and plots to spirit away the plane to a deserted German air base as anticipation mounts among enthusiasts lining the fences at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, southern France."We've heard them all.

There's no truth in any of it," said an Airbus spokeswoman, who reiterated that plans called for flying the plane by the end of the month.The most closely watched debut since the supersonic Concorde first roared down the runway in 1969, the A380 will fly straight into the history books as the first airliner bigger than the Boeing's 747 jumbo, which debuted four decades ago."It's a great milestone in the history of the project," said a spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic, one of the airlines waiting to take delivery of the plane.Virgin founder Richard Branson, who wants gyms and private double beds on his A380s, had the words "Mine's bigger than yours" written on the side of Virgin's first Airbus A340- 600 in 2002 and is expected to have similar fun with the A380.

Maiden flight of Airbus A380. The first flight of the world's biggest airliner, the Airbus A380, was successfully completed Wednesday, April 27, 2005. The aircraft took off from its production site in Toulouse with a crew of six and about 20 tonnes of test equipment, and landed safely after a test flight of approximately four hours. The massive double- decker has room for over 800 passengers and Airbus gave the first plane playfully gave the first plane the registration F-WWOW.
