Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

We had a glitch in communication in getting this NetLetter out in the new format. Although ready on Feb 25, 2005 and posted on the ACFamily Network, we are just getting this out now.

Getting to Boston from Quebec City will be a lot easier this summer. Boston and Quebec City are not only two of the oldest cities in North America, they share a lot in common - an Irish heritage is just one that comes to mind. Bringing them closer together, effective June 1, Air Canada will be the only carrier offering daily non-stop service between the two historic cities. This new route will cut the existing travel time by more than two hours and provide our customers with a handy link to Quebec City's cruise ships.
The new route will be operated by Air Canada Jazz using a 37-seat Bombardier Aerospace Dash 8.

Six additional Boeing 767 widebodies and 60 Embraer aircraft will join our fleet beginning this year. The 767s are scheduled for service to international destinations, such as the Toronto-Rome route being introduced this summer, while the Embraer fleet will be deployed to increase frequency in current markets and for the start-up of new routes.

RETIRED AIR FORCE ONE GETS $31 MILLION HANGAR
While we don't know how much a used 707 goes for these days, the $31 million hangar taxpayers are funding to keep the rain off one to be based in California might be a bid worth considering. Of course, this is no ordinary 707. It's the old turbojet that carried Ronald Reagan to the far corners of the world for his Cold War-ending private chats with the likes of Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev (here ends our knowledge of world politics). The Boeing, dubbed the Spirit of 76, is now mounted on a pedestal, in takeoff attitude, as workers create the Air Force One Pavilion at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. "I know Ronald Reagan is looking down on us and saying, 'This is wonderful,'" said Duke Blackwood, executive director of the library.

Skyservice to serve Russia
According to Commercial Aviation Today, Canadian charter Skyservice Airlines has announced it's been designated to operate scheduled international air service between Canada and Russia using its own aircraft. Skyservice, which has already operated charter flights to Russia, plans to operate year-round flights between Toronto and Moscow, three times a week beginning in the spring of 2005.

Canadian Pacific Airlines inaugural Vancouver to Whitehorse on May 24th., 1944 Capt. George Jarvis, First Officer Larry Dakin and stewardess Eleanor Block made up the crew.

In 1944, the fare from Prestwick Scotland to Montreal in a Lancaster was gbp572.12 one way!

On May 10th.,1949 Trans-Canada Air Lines Canadair DC4M North Stars replaced DC3 on the Edmonton - Saskatoon - Winnipeg and on Dec 2nd, Barbados was added to the Bermuda-Trinidad service.

It was not the TSA's finest hour but at least they followed their own rules -- according to the TSA. A woman was barred from a Mesa Airlines flight from Phoenix to San Diego on Thursday after she allegedly told a screener that the TSA "couldn't find a bomb [in her bag] if there was one." While the woman was detained, the bag was put on the flight, where it traveled uneventfully to San Diego -- uneventfully, that is, until arrival. At Lindbergh field, the plane was evacuated, the passengers and crew were delayed for debriefing and the (previously cleared) luggage was extricated from the aircraft and blown up (not of its own accord). It was all by the book, according to the TSA's Nico Melendez. "If a bag is cleared by TSA, is it OK, under current regulations, to fly without the passenger on the plane." "... All procedures were followed in this case," he said in an e-mail to the Arizona Republic. The passenger, a New Jersey psychiatrist, was questioned (and later released, taking a later flight) as the bag made its way to San Diego, where the plane taxied to an isolated area of the airport and passengers were ordered off without their coats and carry-ons while authorities found Koshnu's luggage and blew it up. ... How was your day?

Dear friends,
While we were aware of the serious problems facing Air Canada and many other carriers in these difficult times,we hoped there would be a way through without going the CCAA route.
The solutions to these types of problems are never easy or pleasant but there is no choice.We sincerely hope the way through this dilemna does not hurt too many people.
What is really obnoxious is the "Holier than thou" attitude of outfits like Westjet,the Johnny come lately's of the airline world.
I can tell you a short story about that. In 1959 when the first DC-8 on a country wide tour stopped in Dorval to show irself off to Trans-Canada.
Jim McLean and I were at the terminal watching it take off as it departed Montreal.
The aircraft rotated and climbed at the now familiar steep angle we associate with jet aircraft. This one however was even more dramatic to impress the locals. Jim said to me..."Bill that proves once again...an empty aircraft can climb like hell".

Westjet has no unions,does not have to develop routes,flies only where others have created the business. Not to make money under those conditions would be almost impossible. The news media does not seem to grasp this situation when they make comparisons.
The day may not be far off when Air Canada may be operating under similar conditions and we will see what happens then.
I do not intend to sound bitter but it is hard.
