Travel Advisory for PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI, #2

Air Canada Security continues to evaluate the situation in Haiti and considers it safe for our operations. Air Canada crews do not have a layover in Haiti and the aircraft operate turn flights with short ground times.

However, the security situation away from the airport in Haiti can be dangerous and unpredictable. Kidnappings and carjacking are on the rise. These acts are mostly taking place in the areas of Bel Air, Martissant, and Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince.

Demonstrations, protests, marches, and strikes, some violent, may occur at any time. They can quickly turn into violent demonstrations with gunfire and burning barricades. Local transportation services can be disrupted. Roadblocks may occur on main roads at any time and often cause traffic disruptions. Curfews may also be in effect.

The rhetoric of some activists and popular organizations has been anti-foreign; therefore, travelers in Haiti are advised to take the following precautions:

* Avoid high-risk areas of Bel Air, Martissant, and Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince.
* Avoid large crowds, particularly in downtown Port- au-Prince.
* Do not attempt to cross blockades, even if they appear unattended.
* Maintain a high level of vigilance, monitor local developments and news broadcasts.
* Monitor the political situation and remain indoors during political rallies and demonstrations.

IMPORTANT NEW PASSPORT REGULATIONS FOR TRAVEL TO/FROM THE USA MACHINE-READABLE PASSPORTS

UPDATE June 15, 2005: Travelers from the 27 countries participating in the United States' Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must have a machine- readable passport to enter the United States. Please visit the following for more info: www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/display?content=4542

If you are in possession of a passport issued by any of the 27 countries listed below, please contact the passport issuing authority to ensure that you are in possession of a machine-readable passport. Please note that boarding will be denied to travelers from VWP countries that do not have machine-readable passports.

The 27 countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program include: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

WESTERN HEMISPHERE TRAVEL INITIATIVE

On Tuesday, April 5, 2005, the U.S. State Department announced details of the proposed "Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative." If the proposed rules are enacted, U.S. and Canadian citizens will be required to carry a passport for travel to or from certain countries/areas that were previously exempt. The proposed implementation is as follows:

* December 31, 2005 - Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America.
* December 31, 2006 - Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.
* December 31, 2007 - Passport required for all air, sea and land border crossings.

Once the proposed rules are finalized - either in their current form or a modified form - the cruise industry will communicate that information to our travel agent partners and guests. In the meantime, individuals with future travel plans that would be affected by the proposed new rules are strongly encouraged to obtain a passport now.

More ACV Sun destinations open to book for winter travel. Air Canada Vacations (ACV) is now accepting confirmed, advance bookings to more destinations for travel this winter. In addition to Barbados and Puerto Plata, three additional destinations­Aruba, Guadeloupe and St. Martin/Maarten­are now open to book for travel on or after Nov. 1. Instead of using the Employee Travel Site (ETS), employees and retirees who wish to book their winter vacation to these destinations will now, until further notice, need to do so by contacting Staff Travel via e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This temporary change in staff booking procedure is a result of ACV's current transition to new reservation system. Once the transfer is completed, we will return to booking through ETS. More destinations will be open in early July, and we will keep you informed as they become available. Please note, if you plan to travel before Oct. 31, you may still book your vacation on ETS.

Air Canada has announced new transborder routes between Las Vegas and both Calgary and Vancouver.

Air Canada pilots over the weekend rejected a new tentative agreement, and as a result the carrier informed Boeing that it has canceled the massive $6 billion 777/787 order it placed in April.

Air Canada parent ACE Aviation sold a 12.5 percent stake in its Aeroplan loyalty points business on June 22nd., 2005 in the airline industry's first spinoff of a frequent flyer program.

The NTSB has released new information (including cockpit voice excerpts) related to the Oct. 14 2004 fatal crash of a Pinnacle Airlines regional jet. The pilots were flying an empty Bombardier CL- 600-2B19 and hoping to "have a little fun" when they decided to climb to the jet's maximum altitude at FL410, according to transcripts from the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) that the NTSB released this week. The two were ferrying the 50-seat jet from Little Rock, Ark., to Minneapolis on Oct. 14. A controller questioned the jet's model and altitude told the pilots, "I've never seen you guys up at 41 there." The crew responded, "Yeah, we're actually ... we don't have any passengers on board, so we decided to have a little fun and come up here.'' Minutes later, the pilots told controllers first that one and later that both engines had failed.

Female British Airways pilots won right to reduced hours to care for children.

As part of the aircraft certification, the fourth A380 will simulate evacuation proceedures. Fitted out with 835 seats and filled with volunteers from local sports clubs. The aim of the test is to evacuate all passengers plus 10 crew, in 90 seconds. Under the terms of certification, only 8 of the 16 exits will be used. The results will determine the number of passengers allowed on each flight.

Angel Flight is a charitable organization that provides free, accessible air transporation for people who must travel for medical purposes.

On Vancouver Island, people with medical issues often cannot receive treatment in their own locales and are forced to travel long distances to centralized medical facilities in Vancouver and Victoria. These trips by conventional means can range anywhere from four to six hours and sometimes longer, often required several times a week for a number of weeks. Angel Flight of British Columbia was founded in 2001 with the purpose of easing the burden of these individuals by utilizing a network of volunteer pilots, aircraft owners, and ground support. Angel Flight launched its service in April 2002 and transports ambulatory patients whose medical conditions make it difficult or impossible for them to travel by conventional means.

Upon medical referral, people can be transported to treatment centres quickly and comfortably so they can focus their energies on getting well. With immune systems that are often a critical consideration, Angel Flight can assure a contagion-free environment on a flight that is dedicated to only that individual and his or her escort.

We fly whenever needed and as often as our capacity allows. Our services are proudly supported through corporate and private donations, as well as fundraising events.

Angel Flight, Inc., is a non-profit organization of pilots and other volunteers dedicated to serving the community by arranging free private air transportation for medical patients who cannot afford to utilize normal, commercial transportation. Angel Flight also provides services to blood, organ and tissue banks.

Angel Flight, Inc. is a member of Air Care Alliance, a group of thirty-seven organizations providing similar services throughout the country. However, these groups do not fly patients or supplies when insurance or other funds can provide commercial transport via air ambulance, charter, or airline. The volunteers fly only when financial need or other special circumstance means a compelling human need would go unfulfilled.

Angel Flight, Inc. was created by a group of people who believe in the benefit of volunteering and strive to keep all aspects of the organization on a volunteer basis. Pilots help people by offering their airplanes and time to help through tough times. Volunteers continually recruit pilots with airplanes as well as other volunteers to help throughout the organization. It is also necessary to make medical facilities, health organizations, hospitals, and the general public aware of our capabilities.

Overheard this Fathers' Day...
A friend and local pilot thought his father (a years- ago pilot) would enjoy a chance again at the controls. So he arranged on Fathers' Day for his Dad to go up with an instructor. The "old man" brought it in for a squeaker. Here's what I heard on tower frequency:
Tower: Understand that was 'Senior' at the controls?
Instructor: Affirmative.
Tower: Well we certainly don't see them that nice very often. Thank you, sir, for showing us all how it's done.
Senior: Well, I may not be as good as I once was. But I'm as good once as I ever was.
