This is a bit if Trivia captured by Vesta Stevenson off her local BBS might interest some of our former RCAF/RAF members. From: CY RELPH Subj: What is a Chippie. In 1917 when the R.A.F. was formed, many mechanics/technicians came from the Royal Navy. There were not too many technical bods in the army those days. The Navy has usually been a little different, (Any one who goes on one of those ships has to be. Aeroplanes were made mainly of wood in those far off days so there was a big demand for carpenters. In the Navy, carpenters were known as "Mr Chips". So the RAF bods being a little more different referred to "Mr Chips" personnel as "Chippie". During the big one I work as a "Chippie" on Airspeed Oxfords and later on the fabulous Mosquito that was also made of wood. It was a great thorn in the side of the Germans. This perhaps explains that frequent tag line "Ex Air Force people, really are superior" that you see (true too ) -=o0o=- .
