Found on the Internet - Since there has been so much confusion on the different freedoms, here is a quick explaination of the eight freedoms of the air which are the fundamental building blocks of bilateral aviation agreements. Hypothetical examples are placed where I think they are necessary. FIRST FREEDOM: Allows an airline to overfly the sovereign territory of a foreign country. SECOND FREEDOM: Allows an airline to make a technical stop in the territory of a foreign country for refueling, etc, but not to load/unload traffic. THIRD FREEDOM: Allows an airline to fly passengers from its own country to a foreign country. FOURTH FREEDOM: Allows an airline to fly passengers from a foreign country back to its own country (or what will be referred to from now on as "the home country"). FIFTH FREEDOM: Allows an airline to fly passengers from its home country to one foreign country, and then onto another foreign country. This is commonly referred to as "beyond rights". An example is Boston (BOS)- Los Angeles (LAX)- Narita (NRT) - Singapore (SIN). Forget the BOS origin, and look at LAX-NRT-SI. NRT-SIN is a fifth freedom leg. Without the LAX tag, thi would be a seventh freedom leg, which we will get to. SIXTH FREEDOM: Allows an airline to fly passengers from one foreign country to another with an intermediate stop in the airline's home country. Example of Mexico City (MEX)-Dallas (DFW)- Amsterdam (AMS). SEVENTH FREEDOM: Allows an airline to operate shuttle or turnaround service between two foreign states (i.e., the flight number does not have a tag to the home country as a fifth freedom flight must, and the flight/aircraft can remain independent of any service back to the home country). EIGHTH FREEDOM: Allows an airline to operate service between two cities within the same foreign state. This is also known as "cabotage". Eighth freedom opens domestic markets to foreign competition. Most carriers accomplish this through codesharing. News reports on 4/29 state that a Virgin 747 lost an inflatable slide for the overwing exits during take-off from London Heathrow (LHR). This slide is housed in a compartment on the wing. Apparently, it inflated for some reason in-flight. It landed in a car park in Slough, near LHR, narrowly missing some parked cars. Independant TV (ITN) actually had it on video as someone was playing with their video camera and caught it separating from the aircraft! | \------_------/ (~) __|__ {| |} On 2nd June this year there'll be a flypast to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Heathrow Airport London.
