On Apr 18th 1950 the first commercial flight was operated by British European Airways from London Heathrow to Cyprus. Exactly 46 years later, on Apr 18th 1996 the last commercial flight was operated by World Airways on the same leg. Included in the guests were Sir George Edwards - designer of the Vickers Viscount, and Sir Peter Masefield - President of British European Airways in 1950. British European Airways has since been absorbed with British Overseas Airways to form todays British Airways. In North America, the following sites have Vickers Viscounts - 1 in Pima Air Museum at Tuscon 5 parked at the Tuscon International Airport 1 in Mid Atlantic Island Air Museum 1 at Vancouver International Airport (ex Air Canada) On the 22nd June Air Canada created a daily departure record of 607 flight legs and carried 49,551 passengers. ~-=o0o=-~ . From the Pionairs Montreal District quarterly newsletter 'Sentinel' Wednesday June 26th a tour of the Maintenance Base at Dorval. Wednesday July 7th a tour & picnic at the Ecomuseum on the Western tip of Montreal Island. Sunday August 11th will be a special day at the Olympic Stadium celebrating 'Air Canada Pionairs Day' at a game between Expos and Chicago Cubs baseball. At the Italian lunch & curling day on Mar 22nd, close to 100 Pionairs met at the Lachine Curling Club. Winners of the 3rd annual district championship were Gord Thompson, Peter Kralka, Bill Sim and Peter Beauchamp. At the Spring Luncheon on Apr 24th, Brian Rosco, Coordinator of Dreams Take Flight in Quebec gave a talk about this years planned flight. Each child is given an instant camera provided by Kodak plus $20 spending money in additon to a 'loot' bag as they leave the aircraft for home. Each child is fingerprinted & photographed as a means of identification prior to departure. Last year 140 children were on a B767 and this year, a B747 has been requested for the October flight. All involved are volunteers. If anyone is interested in volunteering their time for this worthy cause, which is company wide,get in touch with your nearest Pionair group. News from other Districts - London England plan a Riverboat Shuffle on the River Thames from Kew to Westminster August 5th. Halloween party in October. Christmas Dinner & Dance in December. Okanagan Pionairs went to the races at Lake Okanagan June 17th and participated at the 1st Pionairs National Golf at Penticton on June 4/5th. New Brunswick Pionairs - if you are heading down East, you can check for any events with Frank Cogger phone 506-672-2159. Edmonton Pionairs had a fund- raising success recently to the tune of $640 for their area Dreams Take Flight. The System Bowling Tournament was hosted at the Bonnie Doon Lanes last month. ~-=o0o=-~ . Airports of Paris, France Roissy/Charles de Gaulle 23 kilometres north east of Paris near the village of Roissy-en-France is Charles de Gaulle airport. The largest airport serving Paris, it has two terminals, the second of which is split into terminals 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D. Air France Bus leaves every 15-20 minutes during the hours of 5h40 - 23h and deposits passengers at Porte Maillot, Etoile/Place Charles de Gaulle, or Gare Montparnasse. Travel time of about 25 minutes if traffic is clear; an hour or more during rush hours. Cost around 40F. (CA$10.50) An RER/TGV station now serves the airport directly. Trains leave every 15 minutes during the hours of 5h30 - 23h30 to downtown. Travel time is 35 minutes to Gare du Nord. Cost around 35F. (CA$9.20) RoissyBus departs every 15 minutes between the hours of 5h45 - 23h. Average travel times is 45 minutes. Cost 30F. (CA$7.90) Orly Airport South of Paris (14 kilometres) near the town of Orly is Orly Airport. It has two terminals referred to as Orly-Sud (Orly South) and Orly-Ouest (Orly West). Air France Bus leaves every 15-20 minutes from during the hours of 5h40 - 23h and deposit passengers at Gare d'Austerlitz or Gare St-Michel. Travel times of about 25 minutes. Cost approx. 40F. (CA$10.50) Orlybus service to and from Denfert-Rochereau stops next to the RER train stop). Departs every 15 minutes; expect about 45 minutes travel time. Cost is 30F. (CA$9.20) JetBus bus service to Villejuif Louis Aragon stop. Regular departures and similar travel times to those of Orlybus. Cost is around 25F. (CA$6.60) OrlyVal. Frequent connection to Antony RER stop. This conductorless train is the most expensive way into Paris from Orly; roughly 45F. (CA$11.85) ~-=o0o=-~ .
