Airport staff will be on hand to answer questions about various displays (including demos of computer models used by the Planning Department, and our World Wide Web Home Page), and tours will be available including a bus ride around the airside. Space on the tours is limited, so you should call to book in advance. ~-=o0o=-~ . Found on the Internet - DELTA JET LANDS SAFELY AFTER ENGINE PART FALLS TO GROUND A New York airline worker was watching a jet fly an unusually low approach over his neighborhood in Queens last Wednesday when a sizzling hot piece of metal about a foot square bounced off the roof of his house and landed on a car. The engine part fell from a Delta 727; the pilot had shut down one of the three engines and declared an emergency, landing at JFK about 10 minutes after taking off from La Guardia. MORE METAL FALLS FROM THE SKY In San Antonio, Texas, an unarmed missile jettisoned from an F-16 fighter jet as the pilot prepared for an emergency landing crashed though the roof of a house and landed in the driveway. "There was a huge boom, and the whole house shook," said resident Anna Parker. And back in New York, a 9-foot-long leading-edge wing flap from a 727 was found on a street in Queens, near JFK, on Friday morning, leaving a dent in the road. Oddly enough, no 727 flaps have been reported missing. WATCH THAT WAKE -- AND WAIT Expect longer waits for takeoff now that the FAA has imposed its new wake vortex separation standards for IFR operations. An FAA study shows the new rules could increase delays by 72 percent at LAX and 29 percent at NYC. The new rule redefines a "small aircraft" as one weighing less than 41,000 pounds (up from 12,500), reclassifying 57 types of aircraft from bizjets to commuters. Separation of a small aircraft behind a large one also goes up from 4 to 5 miles. AIRLINER HELD UP ... AS IN "HOLD UP" An Air Inter A-320 full of vacationers heading for a resort area in southern France was taxiing down the runway after landing Tuesday when a gang of masked men in two vans rammed through a chain link fence, brandished guns, and held up a banner saying "Shut off the engine and open the hold." The bandits made off with $800,000 in Spanish pesetas that were being transported by Brinks. Nobody was hurt. WE'VE HEARD OF "MANUAL GEAR EXTENSION" BUT THIS GOES A BIT FAR... What do you do when the hydraulic gear gets stuck on a Cessna? If you're Brian Hewson of Perth, Australia, you get your fellow passengers to hold onto your legs (tightly, please!), dangle outside the door at 4,000 feet, and yank those wheels down with a leather belt. The plane -- with Hewson aboard -- landed safely. DEPARTING ON-TIME, WITH OR WITHOUT THE PAX: When they've got to go, the airliners in Tel Aviv have got to go, even if the passengers are still waiting in line for security checks. A shortage of security personnel at Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion airport has been causing takeoff delays -- and missed flights -- in recent weeks. Passengers wait up to 3 hours to reach the security inspection; the unluckiest ones finally get to the gate to find their flight left without them. DELTA OFFERS LIVE TV IN-FLIGHT: Delta Air Lines announced last week it has become the first airline to offer direct satellite TV to passengers, with CNN, Headline News, and the Discovery Channel, through a six-month test aboard one of its planes. ~-=o0o=-~ * * * This message was from JIM DAWSON to ALL * * * * * * and has been forwarded to you by VESTA STEVENSON * * * ----------------------------------------------- According to local newspapers, recently a local commuter carrier was departing Casper with a full load and needed to accommodate a deadheading pilot for the carrier and the copilot's girl friend who is/was a ticket agent for that carrier. The solution was to have the girl friend utilize the jump seat and the deadheading pilot sit, unbelted, on the toilet seat! Casper station personnel called the Denver office and all 5 company people were fired upon landing in Denver! ~-=o0o=-~ .
