Found on the internet Ryanair of UK is having the Jaguar Car Company paying approximately UKL100,000 (CA$221,000.00) to have its leaping 'big cat' mascot painted on the fuselage of 11 B737's. This is the first UK airline to follow the North American trend of advertising. Western Pacific has all its B737 advertise local and regional places. A Southwest B737 is painted in Shamu colours to promote Sea World. California One has B737's painted in the colours of state flags. America West B757's are painted to represent its hub cities of Las Vegas, Phoenix and Columbia. Air Canada sported an Olympic theme during the summer, also for the Raptors and, rumoured is a future edition of the fastest man, Bailey, to run the 100 metres. Airport control towers - Amsterdam's Schiphol airport at 100 metres is considered the tallest, free standing air traffic control tower in the world. Denver International airport's is 99 metres. Houston's at 91 metres. In Canada - Montreals Mirabel airport reaches 62 metres Vancouver's is at 76 metres Toronto Pearson airport goes at 26 metres. BUT possibly the worlds tallest control tower sits atop a 30 story building providing the controllers with a 147 metre high perch to regulate helicopter and float plane traffic in the Vancouver harbour area. Vancouver YVR newest runway is scheduled to open Nov 4th. The new parallel runway with its CAT III Instrument Landing System and the latest in runway lighting systems is a far cry from July 1931 when the airport opened and flying was strictly a daytime event. The vehicle parkade has been opened at Vancouver airport situated immediately in front of the terminal buildings. With 1,560 parking stalls in the four-level structure, the bottom level reserved for 520 vehicles of car rental companies. Closest parking is the P1 section level 1, classified as short term for passenger pickup or drop-off at CA$1.00 per 15 min with a daily maximum of CA$20.00. Areas P3 & 4, levels 3 & 4, rates begin at CA$2 per hour with a daily maximum of CA$12.00. Off airport parking with shuttle service is CA$4.75 per day, CA$31.50 per week and CA$120 per month all plus tax. DELTA MD-80 MAKES A SPECTACULAR "ARRIVAL" AT LGA Delta Flight 554 from Atlanta was landing into the teeth of a fierce Nor'easter Saturday afternoon when its landing gear apparently clipped an approach light stanchion. On touchdown, its gear collapsed, causing the aircraft to spin 180 degrees as it skidded down the runway, coming to rest in the mud just short of Flushing Bay. All 63 passengers on board were evacuated safely down the chutes. The incident shut down Laguardia until Sunday morning to allow NTSB investigators to examine the crippled aircraft before it was moved. Fearing long lines and devastating delays, the airlines have pressured the Clinton administration to delay plans for a new airport security system that would match up passengers and baggage on domestic flights. 490-POUND GORILLA CAUSES B767 RTO: As Delta Flight 709 was about to take off from Salt Lake City for Seattle, passengers and crew heard a "rather loud" noise from the cargo hold, where a 490-pound 17-year-old lowland gorilla named Vip was rattling his reinforced aluminum cage. Seems that although Vip had been tranquilized prior to his original departure from Boston, departure delays plus a stopover at Cincinnati and a plane change in Salt Lake resulted in a gorilla who was "fully awake" by the time the final segment of his flight began some 12 hours later. Not wanting to press their luck, the Delta crew returned to the gate where an obviously displeased Vip was deplaned, after which the flight and its 82 human passengers departed about 90 minutes late. ~-=o0o=-~ .
