Your Navigator - Terry - has returned from his trip. We decided to drive down into the US for our trip this year. We left Dec 17th amid flurries and some freezing rain, but made good time to overnight at Everett. Next day we took route 1 along the Oregon coast and saw some spectacular scenery, enhanced by the crashing surf made high due to the storms approaching from the Pacific. We finally reached San Luis Obisco and stayed there for about 10 days. The weather could have been better, but managed sightseeing and golf. With all the rain the area had had, I became quite adapt at negotiating the water hazards! Prices for the motels we stayed at ranged from US$39 to US$27 each night. Incidently, at two of the motels, there was no plug for the sink, so we added one to our 'get-a-way' package for the future. After being used to seeing the Canadian gas pumps all displaying the same price per litre in the same area, we were surprised to find variations even with major names next to each other ie US$1.12 per gal at BP and US$1.29 per gal at the 76 - now that's free enterprise! Needless to say, we shopped for the cheapest gas before filling up. Most Denny's, the fast food resturant, have free brochures with coupons for discounted motel rooms. These brochures are regional, one for Oregon,Washington,Idaho and BC. Another for California, Arizona and Nevada. We made use of those publications. . From the London England monthly newsletter - Almost 90 retirees and partners enjoyed the Christmas lunch, with many bringing memorabilia to display. The theme was 50 years at LHR. Dick Bradbear, who joined TCA in 1947 gave his reminiscences of his career. Another Pionair, Ben Benfold explained his fund-raising efforts for a 'Convoy of Hope' taking aid to the children of the former Yogoslavia during March 1997. Ben will be driving one of the trucks and was appealing for donations and funds. Next event will be the theatre trip to 'Scrooge' on Jan 20th and 'Miss Saigon' on Feb 10th. ~-=o0o=-~ . Found on the Internet American Airlines have a plan in place for its frequent flyer customers to donate their points towards flights for physically and mentally challenged children - 'Kids in Need'. TWA TO CUT LOSSES AT JFK, PARK ITS 747 AND L-1011 FLEET After losing some $131 million last year at New York's JFK Int'l Airport, Trans World Airlines is reducing the size of its operation there. The carrier also plans to ground its Boeing 747s and Lockheed L-1011s. Instead of 747s and L-1011s, the carrier will operate smaller, more fuel-efficient Boeing 767s and 757s, which also require fewer crew members. PLASTERED PAX PLANS PEN A man who became unruly aboard a USAir flight in July was sentenced before Christmas to spend four years in jail and perform 200 hours of community service on his release. Gary Lee Lougee threw a flight attendant against the cockpit door and threatened to throw her out of the plane. FRENCH TOURISTS GET HOSTILE, TAKE HOSTAGE Apparently misconduct by airline passengers is not strictly a North American phenomenon. A planeload of frustrated French tourists whose Christmas holidays in Africa were cancelled took a travel agent and a hotel manager hostage after they were forced to spend the night in a dreary airport hotel (is that redundant?) outside Paris. BYRD'S ANTARCTIC FOKKER TO BE RECOVERED The Fokker Universal monoplane flown to Antarctica in 1929 by explorer Admiral Richard Byrd has been located and plans are underway to recover it. New Zealanders Chris Rudge and Andrew North are negotiating salvage rights for the plane, dubbed "the Virginian," with Byrd's daughters. ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff Don't forget the Exotic trip of the Orient aboard the 'Sky Princess' with your hosts Kay & Syl Napolitano, two Pionairs from Vancouver Island. Priced from US$2743 pp dbl plus US$176.50 port charges. Departure Mar 28th for 14 days - call Bonita at 1-800-690-3223 Some extra taxes are being applied to car rentals and hotel accommodations in some US cities ie Atlanta and New York, to help pay for new sports facilities, thus saving the local populace from more taxes. Atlanta 3% on car rentals, New Orleans a 4% on hotel accommodations and 3.5% on car rentals in New York. During a recent visit to the US, the city we sought accommodation, gas and food had been hit by the storms which knocked out all the telephone lines for the past 3 days, and we were obliged to use travellers cheques or cash and credit/debit cards were unacceptable - beware! ~-=o0o=-~ . Smilie found by Terry - SHORT FINAL... The pilot of a small freight/mail plane was getting a little complacent in his phraseology, probably because of the rather dull routine of his late-night run. Every weekday at 0215 he would stop at a small airport and check in with: "Good morning Jones field, guess who?" The lone controller was bored too, but insisted on proper terminology and would lecture the pilot on proper radio technique every morning. The lessons fell on deaf ears and the pilot continued his daily "guess who?" callups. That is, until the morning the radio crackled: "Jones Field, guess who?" The controller, well prepared, turned off all the lights on the airport and responded "Jones Field, guess WHERE!" establishing proper communications from then on. ~-=o0o=-~ . That's it for this time, please we need your input, send comments and email addresses of any others who may be interested to Vesta with a copy to Terry. -!- Landing on an Island in the Pacific. _____(~)_____ ! ! !
