I was back in QY (Sydney NS) after completing a radio operators course in WG given by Mac McNaughton and Doug Allen. Will never forget the first time I saw the electric train that used to run from Sydney-Reserve Airport-Glace Bay. It drooped badly in the middle and miners from Glace Bay had left their mark on the floors, walls, and yes even the ceiling. Met my new boss Dennie Dowling and after a few shifts with Gerry McGloin, I became one quarter of the staff per shift. The lead mechanic was Eric Grimmett now a s/k (silent key) along with mechanics, Al McWilliams, Lefty Feldman (ex RAF RCAF fighter pilot) Bud Raymond and Eric?. Worked with passenger agents Virginia Morrison (became Mrs.Dowling), Burt Beers (left TCA in early fifties and now lives at Qualicum Beach BC. -became our best man) Alie MacLean. Cargo agents were Phonse and Duff Doyle, remember the faces of the others but do not recall the names. Radio-ops were Ron Matthews, Charlie Brown, Eric Robideau. Some of the pilots passing through were Don Beatty, Joe White, Ian March, Vance Larsen, Harry Kent, Gus Cirko, John Cosco, Al Salo, Pete Hamilton, Norm Ramsay and many others. Bought a new Mercury car for $1250 and always liked to work with Eric Grimmett on the day shift because each day he would drain a little extra off when he checked the sump on the gas truck and being environmentally conscious even in those days, the contents of the bucket found its way into the Merc. Sold that car to Gus Cirko a year later for $1450. Most shifts were quite routine and during the midnight shift especially when the weather was down, we quite often had water fights in the waitiing room, it was difficult to get things dried up before Denny would arrive in the morning. Quite frequently, overseas flights would have to land at Sydney when Boston and or New York went down - remember one night we had five big ships (Connies, DC4 and 6, Stratacruiser). There was room for about 20 people in the waiting room and you can imagine the scene when about 250 came in on us. Had psgrs sleeping on the desk in the radio room, on the floor all over. They had to come in because there was no heat in the aircraft. Also remember pilots like Joe White reporting light local traffic off runway whatever and that would be our cue to jump on the gas truck and bag ourselves some fresh meat. Anyway - I have many fond memories of those days and in 1948, I was transferred to Moncton Flt Dispatch with Bob Wicks replacing me. Smilies found by Terry - Overheard at a local flying club - For all of my flying life I have written essential information on my right hand. IFR approach essentials, frequencies, and ATIS are always on my hand. I was also instructing several young ladies at the time. On this occasion I was talking about this procedure I used in the presence of my wife. I further elaborated that, unlike pieces of paper, I was unlikely to misplace my hand. Wife, "You'd better not." Picture this, Berlin, 1952, airfield real busy. American pilot comes on the radio requesting taxi instructions to the terminal. Controller: 'Have you not been here before?' Pilot: 'Yes, once in 1945, but I was just passing through!' At London Gatwick: a A320 Air France is making an auto-approach. At 200', the computer decided to make a go-around with no reason and no command from the crew. Here is what we heard on the TWR freq: Air France: "London from Air France 1234, It's going around !" London TWR: "Air France 1234, report intentions" Air France: " Well ... to go with it sir ! " ~-=o0o=-~ . That's it for this time, please we need your input, send comments and email addresses of any others who may be interested to Vesta with a copy to Terry. -!- Landing on an Island in the Pacific. _____(~)_____ ! ! ! <<<>>> Air Canada Pionairs ~Between Ourselves-Netletter~ http://www.mortimer.com/acra mailto:This email address is being protected from spambots.
