HAPPY ANNIVERSARY AIR CANADA On April 10th - today - Air Canada turns 60 years old. It all began on that date in 1937 when Bill 74 received Royal Assent in the Parliament of Canada. Trans-Canada Air Lines was born. The moving force behind the establishment of TCA was C.D.Howe, and the company he had created would give the country a national airline. Philip Gustav Johnson, an engineer from Boeing Airplane Co was appointed V.P. Operations on June 24th 1937. He established his office in the C.N. Express building at 355 McGill Street, Montreal. Don MacLaren, hired on May 15th 1937 as the airlines' first employee was Johnson's assistant together with W.F.'Bill' English and F.T.'Fred' Wood. H.T.'Slim' Lewis was appointed Superintendent of Flying. O.T.'Ted' Larson was Meteorology. S.S.'Steve' Stevens was Communications and Oliver West headed up Maintenance & Engineering. The fleet consisted of one Stearman and two Lockheed Electras. 50 YEARS AGO The 'NORTH STAR' aircraft was introduced into the fleet. 40 YEARS AGO The airline ordered 20 Vickers Vanguard aircraft at a cost of CA$67 millions. 30 YEARS AGO Inauguration of the YUL-YYZ-LAX flight and the direct flights YUL & YYZ to MIA. 20 YEARS AGO New line mainteneance hanger opened at Winnipeg. ~-=o0o=-~ If anyone has any memorabilia they wish to give or loan to the company for the archives, or photographs, with suitable identification of location and people, then contact Cory Mcdams email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Central Mountain Air, who recently took over routes from AirBC to Penticton, Nanaimo, Castlegar, Cranbrook and Dawson City will honour trip passes until April 18th, pending an Interline Agreement being signed. ~-=o0o=-~ .
