Welcome to Jack Newart ex TCA/AC worked from 1941-1984 now dividing his time between White Rock,BC and Cathedral City, California. Retired from Flight Crew Schedule in YVR. Phil Pawsey sends us this information - The latest Canadian Amateur Radio magazine contained an article, which I have condensed which some may find interesting. The 11 crew and 14 passengers, including three children of the 250-tonne Cook Islands ferry MV Avatapu were adrift in three life rafts and an aluminum dinghy for more than 30 hours after being forced to abandon ship on Sat. night Feb. 22. A raging engine fire north of Palmerston Atoll in the Cooks Islands caused the emergency. Quantas Flt. 101 enroute from Auckland to Hawaii was notified and they picked up the ship's emergency beacon. The flight descended and located the burning vessel and the life rafts. The survivors shone a flashlight at the jet and using morse code got the message through that they were safe. I find that quite remarkable because even with an Aldis Lamp, I think that would have been difficult. Anyway by using the wingtip lights the pilots were able to signal that they would receive HELP IN 1 DAY- this is also very remarkable. Two RNZAF Orion aircraft and two container ships were diverted to the scene with the Orions dropping a radio and medical supplies. The survivors were rescued on Feb.24, 30 hrs after abandoning ship-no reports of injuries. During the recent Vancouver Island Spring Luncheon, at which your Navigator attended, I was fortunate enough to sit with, amongst others, Pauline and Harry Davies from Parksville. I found out that Pauline was born in the same UK city of Bristol as I was, so we had lots to talk about. You never who you will bump into at the various Pionair functions - you really should plan on attending one nearest you - if you don't already! ~-=o0o=-~ . Don't forget all you ex P & F Stores types, Fred Pedder, editor of 'Parts & Pieces', the newsletter for Stores by Stores people has for slae at CA$20 a video of photographs from the newsletter for the past 35 years with music sound track. Found on the Internet - LUFTHANSA'S "IRON ANNIE" EMBARKS ON NEW SEASON: Lufthansa's legendary WWII-era Ju-52 trimotor commenced a new season of sightseeing flights in Hamburg on Easter Sunday after a meticulous winter overhaul at the company's maintenance facilities. Apart from Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart are on the agenda. To obtain the timetable, mail a postcard to Lufthansa Stiftung, P.O. Box 630300, 22313 Hamburg, or fax to 49-[0]40-5070-5061. LUFTHANSA'S CITYLINE GOES ALL JET: Lufthansa Cityline, once the world's largest operator of Fokker 50 turboprops, last week bid farewell to the last of them. The Fokker 50 has been gradually replaced by the new 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet. COMAIR dedicated a Canadair RJ to employees as its 20th Anniversary Jet. April Fool fever seems to be running rampant this week. Our spies in the field turned up this (unverified) memo: "There appears to be some confusion over the new pilot role titles. This notice will hopefully clear up any misunderstandings. "The titles P1, P2 and Co-Pilot will now cease to have any meaning, within the BA operations manuals. They are to be replaced by Handling Pilot, Non-Handling Pilot, Handling Landing Pilot, Non-Handling Landing Pilot, Handling Non-Landing Pilot, and Non-Handling Non-Landing Pilot. "The Landing Pilot is initially the Handling Pilot and will handle the take-off and landing, except in role reversal when he is the Non- Handling Pilot for taxi, until the Handling Non-Landing Pilot hands the Handling to the Landing Pilot at eighty knots. "The Non-Landing (Non-Handling, since the Landing Pilot is handling) Pilot reads the checklist to the Handling Pilot until after the Before Descent Checklist completion, when the Handling Landing Pilot hands the handling to the Non-Handling Non-Landing Pilot who then becomes the Handling Non-Landing Pilot. "The Landing Pilot is the Non-Handling Pilot until the "decision altitude" call, when the Handling Non-Landing Pilot hands the handling to the Non-Handling Landing Pilot, unless the latter calls "go-around", in which case the Handling Non-Landing Pilot, continues handling and the Non-Handling Landing Pilot continues non-handling until the next call of "land" or "go-around", as appropriate. "In view of the recent confusion over these rules, it was deemed necessary to restate them clearly." ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff Interline Emergency Half Price Sale! Smilie from Alan Rust - What if Microsoft Started Making Cars ***************** 1. a particular model year of car wouldn't be available until after that model year instead of before it. 2. every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car. 3. occasionally your car would just die for no reason, and you'd have to restart it. For some strange reason, you'd just accept this. 4. You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought a Car 95 or Car NT. But then you'd have to buy more seats. 5. Sun Motorsystems would make a car that was powered by the sun, twice as reliable, and five times as fast-but it would only run on 5 percent of the roads. 6. The oil, engine, gas, and alternator warning lights would be replaced with a single "general car fault" warning light. 7. people would get excited about the "new" features in Microsoft cars, forgetting completely that they had been available in other cars for years. 8. We'd all have to switch to microsoft gas. 9. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
