Subject: Newfoundland FlotillaI
It may interest Air Canada Hams to know that a flotilla of about
50 sailboats left Toronto May 11th enroute to Trinity,
Newfoundland as part of the  John Cabot celebrations. They plan
to arrive Trinity June 21st before the arrival of the replica
Matthew on June 24th.  This could be an exciting adventure.
The boats vary in size from 70 feet to two 26 foot Grampians.
I visited them in Kingston on May 12th where they arrived after
a cold and rough 28 hours from Toronto.  One boat ran aground at
dawn on Prince Edward County shoals near the Ducks Island and two
went in to Cobourg with engine problems and are now trying to
catch up.  The fleet is one day ahead of schedule. They passed
Montreal last night and this morning so will arrive Sorel today
May 16th.
13 of the boats have HAM stations onboard and the fleet has a
special event call sign CF3NYC. They have been checking in to the
Mississauga Maritime Net around 0745 EDT on 14121. Their planned
frequencies are 3738, 7060 and 14115 at 8.30 a.m. EDT and 3785,
7230 and 14325 at 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.
These last frequencies are on the American Band as they plan to
have contacts with a similar U.S. fleet, also enroute to Nfld.
So far they haven't really organized their listening on all
frequencies so it's a bit haphazard. I'm trying to keep in touch
with them so if anyone wants more info just drop me an email.

Charles Legate VE3CFL is the Chief Radio Opr and is on the Burin
Star.  His wife Dianne used to work with us in Stn Svcs computer
section in the late 60's I think (don't remember name).
Anyway she's principal of Flowervale Public School in Thornhill,
has a HAM licence and her station is in the Library of the school.
Each morning around 9.00 a.m. three students, ages 6 to 10 operate
the station and try to contact the fleet.  They are being well
trained and spell their names in very clear phonetics.

. Found on the Internet.

Complaints have been circulating about the 'Endless wait at BA at
LHR'. The new Cargo Service Centre was particularly mentioned.
(Unfortunately the article concluded with the statement
'Oh yes, and let's not forget Air Canada, which is creeping up
on the time-wasting charts' - eds)

Companies making cabin supplies - everything from cups and trays
to swizzle sticks and towels - are being invited to tender for
Japan Air Lines business .. via the Internet.

Canada 3000 have added a 6th A320 Airbus to its fleet at a cost of
US$42 million.

Royal Airlines has taken delivery of its 1st A310 Airbus.
The carrier used the aircraft earlier in May doing charity flights
for Cystic Fibrosis at CA$35 a flight. The pilots and flight
attendants gave their own time, maintenance provided by Wright
International, fuel by Shell, AMR supplied the ground handling
and Signature Vacations provided the reservations.

Hollis Harris (remember? - eds) was granted preliminary approval
to proceed with Caljet to provide low fares with newer
equipment than other previous start ups.

Latest charter startup airline called Vistajet operating out
of Toronto with Boeing B737 took off May 3rd.

Most of you know that Airbus Industries use the Super Guppies
to transport large aircraft components to the final assembly
point. Well the next generation is called the 'Beluga', based
on an A300 airframe known as the A300-600ST with a volume of
50,000 cubic feet, larger than the US Air Force C-5 Galaxy or
the Antonov An-124.

British Airways is to change their Corporate Livery on June 10th.
Code-named 'Utopia', the top-secret livery will reflect the
airline's quest for perfection.

.Smilies.

During a perfect flight at 33,500' passengers of the flight XYZ123
get frightened by a bang and vigorous vibration. After a few
seconds a soothing voice on the public com says : "Dear passengers
please look to your left, you can see a half of the port wing was
torn off. Now look to your right, if you plese, and see that the
starboard engine is still on fire.  And then please look below -
there you'll see five little white clouds.  Dear passengers, those
little clouds are not real clouds, they are the open parachutes of
your flight crew who would like to appologize for any inconvenience
to your further travel plans.
