STAR ADDS VARIG, FOCUSES ON ASIA

Brazilian airline Varig has officially joined the Star Alliance
on October 22 as alliance airlines are now focusing their attention
on Asian carriers to expand the reach of their global network.
The alliance partners are now working at strengthening their
network in the Asian market amid speculations that Singapore
Airlines or Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific Airways will shortly
announce they are to become the new Star Alliance members.
If, as is possible, both choose to join the Star Alliance, it
would be almost certain Thai would decide to remove itself from the
cooperation agreement.

AIRCRAFT ORDERS

Start up EASTWIND Airlines (W9) has ordered two Boeing 737-700s for
delivery in April and June 1998. The airline currently operates two
B737-200s between selected US East Coast airports.

Australia's QANTAS Airways (QF) has announced the purchase of three
Boeing 747-400s for delivery in 1999 and 2000, an order worth about
USD 474 millions.

Spanish airline SPANAIR will offer 266 free tickets to passengers
presenting themselves dressed in costumes celebrating Spain's
culture or history to celebrate its first scheduled North American
route when it opens its Madrid (Spain) - Washington (USA) flight on
November 20.

QANTAS will be moving from Heathrow Terminal 3 across the south
runway to Terminal 4 next week.   That would bring 3 airlines of the
BA-AA.CP-QF alliance into one terminal.
One wonders when AA will also make the move.

. In NetLetter nr 205 we mentioned Varig joined the Star Alliance -
Helene Seiz sends us this observation -
I found it... hilarious that with Varig joining Star Alliance,
passengers can now visit 642 cities on 1 ticket and 1 baggage check.
It is O.K. to have ONE baggage check but ONE TICKET? with 642 TRIP
COUPONS? Ha! Ha!
How long would it take to complete this trip?   Regards.

. Smilie

Mark Caduc sends us this one -

The student pilot was midway through the oral portion of his
Private practical test.  After reviewing his pre-flight planning,
the examiner pointed out that the Weight & Balance figures showed
that the airplane would be 50 pounds over max gross.
"What can you do about that?" asked the examiner.
"First, I would have my passengers take off their clothes,"
suggested the applicant.
"If that were not enough, I'd drain a gallon of oil from the engine.
Finally, I'd remove 12 pounds of air from each tire..."

.  That's it for this time, please we need your input, send
