Subject: My Career with TCA/AC
Discharged from the RCAF as a pilot in 1945 along with two other
TCA types namely Rolly Davies and Angus Carnahan. As pilots we were on
leave of absence from the RCAF and flying for and paid by Canadian Pacific
Airlines which company in those days ran the Commonwealth Air Training
Scheme across Canada. Great nontaxable pay.
We three joined TCA the same day in 1945 as Space Control Agents
in Central Control on Bay St. in Toronto. Angus and I were both transferred
a month later to Western Control in Edmonton. Rolly remained in Toronto
and eventually became involved in the Training Dept. with Jack Chamberlain
in Montreal. Transferred back to Toronto as a supervisor in Central Control
(Austin Bldg.) in 1949 working with the likes of Ted Duffield under
Jack Goddard.
In 1954 my next move (at the suggestion of Reg Campbell) was to
Midway Airport in Chicago as Res/Ato Manager with Harry Akin as Airport
Manager. In those days there was no pre-clearance of U.S. Customs and
Immigration in Toronto and the clearance procedure was carried out in the
old Administration Building at the corner of 63rd and Cicero Ave our
aircraft arrival point. At Midway the first scheduled Viscount Aircraft
was introduced to our Toronto Chicago service. When the move was eventually
made to O'Hare Field reservations was by then located in downtown Chicago
where I worked with the likes of Bill Rourke, Lorne Timbers and
Alex Douglas.
Transferred to Los Angeles in 1967 to setup a reservations and
airport counter operation (under Gordon Gaffikin) prior to the start of
service in late 1967. Joined the U.S. Regional Office in Los Angeles as
Passenger Service Manager for Art Suffron under Pat LaBrie. In 1975 moved
with the Regional Office to New York City. I then accepted a move back to
Chicago in 1977 as Airport Manager and remained in that position until my
retirement in 1983 with 38 years of service.
My final move was to Sun City, Ca. my current residence.

Raynard Russ sends us this update -
Subject: Montreal Pionair`s curling day info
Close to one hundred Montreal area Pionairs gathered at the Lachine Curling
Club on Friday April 3rd. Our hosts were the Lachine Curling Senators
(retired men day curlers) we were met in the reception area by Gaetan Fortin
the President of the Senators and Russ Reynard the Pionair coordinator of the
event. Both of these gentlemen wearing their bright red Curling Club dinner
jackets. A very impressive welcome to a fun afternoon.
We were treated to a lunch of lasagna, ceasar salad, garlic bread, a dessert
of ice cream and peacan pie, and then all the coffee/tea we could drink.
All for a Pionair price of seven dollars, all included.
So much for the food. We were there to meet, talk and enjoy the efforts of
our Pionair curlers on the ice. We were treated to some very good curling.
For those of you who are curling fans and may be familiar with Pionair
curlers from some of the system events, our mixed (men and women Pionair)
rinks were skipped by Roger Carter, Tom Sayer, Lil Rybend, Hugh Carre,
Peter Simpson and Reno Alfonso.
When the ice chips had settled the rink of Skip Reno Alfonso,
Third Norm Reed, Second Paul Nakamachi and Lead Bud Cluet had won the day.
Quebec Director Herb Guilfoyle presented them with AC forest green
sweatshirts sporting Pionair pins.
Thanks to the Lachine Senators for their great hospitality, we really
had a fun day.

. Jack Cooke sends us information about the TCA ALUMINI -
I do not believe there is an application form per se, but this is a
laid-back group and probable only needs "your vitals', such as name,
employee number, location, employ/term dates.
Morley Ryder is the current President and his wife Mary, the Secretary.
I do not think that they have an email address, and they winter each year
in the Tampa Bay area. I believe they should be back in Canada by the end
of April. The address is Mrs. Mary Ryder, 1000 Mic Mac Blvd.,
Apartment # 607, Dartmouth, NS, B3A 4M7.
Anyone wishing to join should just send this info to Mary, but should
not expect a reply until early/mid July when she sends out this year's
Alumni details.
At that time she will send out the conference schedule, a hotel request
form, and a remittance request for the current year's membership plus the
conference banquet, and activity fees. A stamped, self-addressed envelope
should be included to help defray the processing costs.
This group is looking for new blood, in order to remain active.

FAA Administrator Jane F. "Flightless" Garvey, tired of being nicknamed
"The Penguin," announced plans recently to begin flying lessons.
SOUTHWEST'S CARRY-ON POLICY GETS SERIOUS: DON'T BE A BIN HOG...OR ELSE
Southwest Airlines President and CEO Herb Kelleher said, on Apr 1st, that
his carrier's short-lived "Don't Be A Bin Hog" slogan is being retired in
favor of "You Must Want A Whuppin'." The "bin-hog" program began as an
effort to reduce the amount of carry-on baggage but has not worked as
well as Southwest planned. Said Kelleher, "We tried. A couple of weeks
ago, we even began offering free luggage if passengers would simply
CHECK their larger pieces. But now, all bets are off," he said.
DELTA'S NO-BAG POLICY MEETS RESISTANCE:
On Apr 1st, Delta Air Lines acknowledged that its new policy prohibiting
all carry-on bags except those containing food was not going well.
The carrier reportedly ran out of closet space on several flights --
galleys were pressed into emergency use to store the excess bags.
"It's a good thing they weren't in use after all".

BILL BUYS BOEING BIZJETS: MICROSOFT MAGNATE GOES TO THE AIR
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates announced today that he has placed
an order with Boeing for three new, fully customized 747-400 personal
aircraft. The new "Billjets" will not have the normal high-bypass
turbofan engines, but instead will use a super-scalar array of 333-mHz
Pentium II microprocessors complete with cooling fans. Boeing has
promised delivery no later than 3Q 1999. "So, Bill should have them by
2002," an unidentified Boeing official stated.!!!!!
