. News from the Districts.

45 Pionairs gathered for the OTTAWA District's Spring Luncheon April
18th.  We enjoyed a new location and the Chinese food.
Graham Richardson donated two Regimental ice buckets that raised a
substantial sum when raffled for "Dreams Take Flight".  Incidentally
Helmut and Maria Hemmerich are spearheading new efforts by the
District's members to support that great initiative.
This year's nominating committee (Past District Directors Ken McCord,
Art Scott and Lloyd Wedge) nominated Pat Hare to become District Director
and Bruce Wanamaker as Treasurer.  This ends umpteen years that Al Martel
has looked after the dollar side of things, and my three years in the
District Director chair.  Pat and Bruce were elected by acclamation.
Jess Rougeau continues as Social Coordinator,  Glee Shapiro as
Membership Coordinator,  Jack McGuire as Telephone Coordinator, Ilene
Pedwell as District Networker, Roy Nash as Fund Raiser and Bob Holmgren as
Member-at-large.  Cam Evans is our Archives representative.
Our Fall Luncheon will be on Saturday October 17, and Christmas Luncheon
on Wednesday December 2.
We appreciate Pat taking on the District Director's job, as she lives in
Iriquois, about an hour's drive away from Ottawa on the St. Lawrence River.

Just to let you know that HALIFAX Bowling restarts the first Monday in
Oct., which is 05 Oct., same time and place.  Had our monthly meeting
today at Armdale, about 40 in attendance, Russ Reynards remarks about
changes coming in the ECC later this year and changes to travel info on
cheque stub were conveyed to the meeting, all thought this would be an
impovememt.
All the best.  Mitch <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

The EDMONTON district luncheon was very successful with approximately 53 in
attendance.  It was the annual meeting so we had no guest speaker.
Our next event will be a barbecue in early August but will forward the
details later.

. Ted Styrczula sends us his bio -

In Aug 1950 I was hired by Trans-Canada Air Lines as a Learner
Mechanic. I really enjoyed my work and the people I worked with like learner
Howie Noel, mechanic Buck Bentley and crew chief Howard Bonniecastle and even
the big boss that most of the mechanics 'lovingly'? called "Spannerface" or
"slim" Munsen...there were a lot more names, but it was a long time ago...
Sounds like my career path is set, right? Wrong! I flew to Toronto one
weekend to see a friend of the family. When I got back to work I asked
(begged) for a transfer, needless to say I was refused...what else to do but
resign my job take my severence pass and fly to Toronto...
To my pleasent surprise I was rehired by T.C.A. in Malton to the same
position I had at the Dorval base.
A month later I got called to the personel office..."Ted" they said
"   you'll be on steady afternoons from three to midnight including Saturday
and
Sunday with Monday and Tuesday off"...
To a nineteen year old living alone in T.O. that was like saying "your
absolutely cut off from any and all social life indefinitely"...O.K. only
thing to do, I resigned my job on Jan 29 '53, and started work at
A.V.Roe in Malton...
After a year and a half or so I get homesick for Montreal, I reapplied
to TCA in Dorval, but they said I already quit twice and they wanted someone
a little more stable. So I went to work for Canadair.
July 1966 after another application for employment at the Dorval base
Air Canada had a change of heart.  I was hired August 8th, 1966.
The period between '66 and '78 went by rather quickly having worked on
most of the types of instruments from all the aircraft including the ones in
the gyro clean room. 1978 was also the year I got my amateur radio licence
VE2FYU. In 1980 I started getting acting foreman assignments that lasted
'till 1982 that's approx. the time I started the acting Instructor
assignments in Mtce Training 'till Jan 1983.
May1982 I got my Pilot's Licence with night Rating...I also bought
my very own airplane in 1983...
My first day of retirement started July 1st 1991.

Ron Munson from LHR shares this information -

If any of you are planning a visit to the UK the following website
may be of interest:
Suggest you log into www.ukindex.co.uk/  - this site is full of info
and you can insert your day of travel, time of day etc. and up will pop the
relevant timetable.  If you click the Search the Index icon then type in,
say, travel and railway or travel and flight and click submit this will
bring up various links, one of which is "UK online all in one travel
timetables". On the left hand side will appear several links i.e. Holidays,
Flights, Ferries, , etc.etc..
Log into the appropriate link and this allows you then to enter your
date and time of travel etc. I think you will find this website very useful
as you can pinpoint your needs against date of travel and time of arrival.

. Smilie.
Karl Eliason found this one - airline not identified!

A young businessman was seated next to an elderly priest on an airplane.
Having a minor technical problem at the gate and the flight being delayed,
the Captain apologized and announced that the airline would be buying a
free round of drinks.

When the charming and very attractive flight attendant came by, the
businessman ordered a double scotch.  Then she asked the priest if he would
like a drink.

"Oh, no thank you," replied the priest. "I would rather commit adultery
than drink alcohol."

Halting in mid-swallow and dribbling scotch down his front, the businessman
quickly replaced his drink on the beverage cart and replied, "Excuse me,
miss, I didn't know I had a choice."
