TAMPA ACRA BOWLING
Betty and I are registered to go to the Tampa ACRA Bowling and the actual
dates are "registration Friday, May 29th, Bowling Saturday May 30th, and
get away on Sunday May 31."  There have been several dates listed in your
newsletters, none of which were right.  We expect to have a really good
time, we have been going for about l8 years now and it is a really good
party and a little bowling.

. News from the Districts.
Ron Munson in LHR sends this in -
Air Canada staff at Heathrow are preparing to combat an army assault
course to raise cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care.  Four workers at our
offices at Radius Park, LHR, have collected more than GBP200 from
colleagues and friends and they hope to complete the gruelling course
within an hour.  The course features scramble nets, monkey bars, a water
ditch and a 10ft wall.

. Ron Munson sends this information -
Virgin is moving into the European package holiday businees and two B737s,
flying under the name Virgin Sun, will begin services next year to Spain,
Portugal, Greece, Turkey and the Canary Islands.  Virgin Holidays, which at
present specialises in long haul breaks, will offer around 150,000
short-haul holidays with prices from GBP199 per person.

A new directory covering more than 1,000 airlines has been published by a
British firm.   The Aerospace International Directory of World Airlines is
sponsored by Boeing and edited with the help of IATA.   The new A5 size
book is in colour and comes with free CD Rom which enables users to
download any information without the need for re-typing.   The guide
details address, fax, email, web site, senior personnel, fleet, financial
performance, shareholding, route, network and history.  Airlines are
indexed alphabetically, by country, by two letter IATA code and three
letter ICAO code.
The GBP36 guide is available from Aviation Directories, PO Box 1315, Potters
Bar, Herts, EN6 1PU.  Tele: 01707 665151.  Fax: 01707 660330.

.  Tom Grant sends us this -
I was wondering how many of your readers take the National Geographics
and after reading them are reluctant to get rid of them unless it is to a
"good home."  Now, since most of these readers have cargo passes, I would
like to suggest a possible destination for the valuable, but not easily
placed, issues.
I would direct everyone to the January 1998 NGeo and the "Helping Build
a Bridge" article in the BEHIND THE SCENES department. Also they should
have a look at  http://www.bridge.org/  which is the Bridge-to-Asia site.
The question is how can we get our NGeo mags to SFO and to the docks using
Air Canada and volunteer power?
I ask your readers to suggest some ideas after looking at the article and
the website. They can email me, Tom Grant, at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
(Sounds like something the Pionairs USA could think about - eds)

. Following on our recent article re the Vanguard, Mike Leduc sends this -
I remember the V/G quite well, as a matter of fact it was the first
aircraft in which I flew first class and it was in the rear!  From a
passenger perspective, I quite liked the aircraft.  It was fun (?) to
watch passengers when the craft reached an altitude where the prop pitch
changed and the engine RPMs changed.
Also, I remember a former mechanic who transferred to our department, one
Harold Macdonald, who didn't like the V/G.  I believe he said "One Vanguard
should be cut lenght-wise and put on display to show how not to build an
aircraft".  Cheers, Michael Leduc   This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. Found on the Internet.

El Al announce that only cartoons and nature movies will be shown in the
rear section of its B747 for passengers who find in-flight movies
'too raunchy'!

A New airline British South Atlantic Airways based in the Falkland
Islands will be operating a B737-200.
(Some of us will recall that B.S.A.A were the initials for British South
American Airways, a forerunner to B.O.A.C and now British Airways - eds)

AIRCRAFT ORDERS
German leasing company Bavaria is ordering five Boeing 717-200s.
This is the first order for the 100 seat 717-200 since Boeing decided to
rename the MD-95 which it acquired as part of the Boeing McDonnell merger.
Prior to the merger, the MD-95 attracted a single customer, the former
ValuJet, with an order for 50 aircraft.
The roll out of the first 717-200 is planned for June 10.

French regional carrier Brit Air (DB) has an order with Bombardier
Aerospace for eight CL-65 aircraft.

US flag carrier Continental Airlines (CO)'s regional subsidiary ordered
25 Embraer ERJ-135 jets with options for a further 50 aircraft.
The first ERJ-135 rolled out of Embraer's factory in Brazil on May 12.

A Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-200 was the first widebody aircraft to land
at Hong Kong's new Chek Lap Kok airport as part of the Hong Kong airport
authority's first airdrome trial.
The new Chek Lap Kok airport is to begin commercial operations on July 6 to
replace Kai Tak airport.

A STORY OF THE WEIRD:
A Denver man is suing Continental Airlines because he was injured by a
tubby seatmate.  Michael Townes claims he needed surgery to repair tendon
damage caused when his elbow was pinned to the armrest for two hours.

. Smilie.

Back in the days when direction finding equipment was being installed in
towers, a pilot enroute from Pensacola to Norfolk and not knowing
exactly what his position was, called:
"Atlanta Tower, this is N1234"
"N1234, go ahead"
"Could you give me one of those practice DF steers?"
"Sorry but we don't give *practice* DF steers."
(short pause)
"Well, how about one of them other kind, then?"
