This year's local ACRA Golf Tournament takes place at Ken-Wo Golf Course
in Kentville, Nova Scotia, on July 15th, with a 1 pm Shotgun Start.

. Ed Leckett sends us his bio -
I am a member of the Air Canada family, retired since 1991. I have recently
been introduced to computers and your Newsletter through a friend who has a
binder full. It is quite pleasurable to read these accounts of years of
experiences.
In February, 1952 I became employed with Trans Canada Airlines in Winnipeg
as a mailroom clerk and almost 40 years later took my retirement. I moved
from mail clerk to work in the sheetmetal shop with Div.5. which was an Air
Force contract the company had for around five years. When the Vickers
Viscount, fin#602, the then "Queen of the skies" belly flopped on the runway
while doing "circuits and bumps", the company needed some sheetmetal guys PDQ
and I was fortunate to be chosen to work on this machine as a permanent
employee and so began my long association with the airline.
In 1961, the Airline was having a bad time of it and an austerity program
was implement which meant some lost jobs. I was laid off from the Metal shop
but was re-hired immediately as temporary staff in Category One (mtce.)with
the chance of permanency down the road. Six months later it became so.
Needless to say I was happy about that.
In time I wrote for a "Certs" license (certified mechanic) and as D.O.T. now
M.O.T changed the nomenclature to read C.A.T. (certified aircraft
technician)then to A.M.E (aircraft maintenance engineer)I became all those
things. A rose by any other name........!
I like many others came to Montreal where I now reside, as part of the base
phase-out in Winnipeg. My move to this city took place in 1970, right before
the October Crisis. Here, as an A.M.E. is where I ended my active duty.
In a nutshell, there you have it.

. Brian Dunn sends us this update -
Contrary to earlier reports, the London International Air Show went
ahead under different leadership and sponsorship.
Air Ontario among others are helping to promote and sponsor the event.

The National Capital Airshow was held in Ottawa and was a huge
success from all accounts....despite some rainy weather now and again.
David Collenette, the Minister of Transport announced new international
route opportunites for Air Canada and Canadi>n Airlines Intl on June 2nd.
Air Canada has been given the green light to launch a daily Toronto to
Hong Kong service, subject to new bilateral talks with the Government of the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Canadi>n Airlines Intl. has been
granted daily Vancouver-Osaka service, subject to bilateral talks with
Japan.
Air Canada has put their 32nd A319 into service (FIN281) last week and is
expected to have the 33rd in service by today (FIN282). That leaves only two
more to be delivered during June to complete the order for thirty-five!
Seems like only yesterday when the first one was delivered.

. Air New Zealand and Ansett are to join the Star Alliance in 1999. The
announcement was made as the six member partnership celebrated its
first birthday.
. British Midland of the UK have denied it is their intention to join
Star Alliance.
. Travellers will be soothed!
Stressed travellers at Britian's major airports will soon be pacified
by the sounds of singing birds, humming bees and gurgling streams.
British Airways is testing the natural sounds at Heathrow, Gatwick and
Manchester airports.
. Drunken passenger brought down to earth -
A computer systems engineer who got drunk on an Air Canada flight from
India was jailed for two months in the U.K. recently. On the 4 hour
flight from Delhi to London, England the passenger, who had been drinking
got very abusive. The captain radioed ahead for police assistance and the
passenger was arrested on landing.
. Boeing 737 orders are now past 4,000, the worlds most successful airliner,
operated by 280 airlines in more than 100 countries. It is estimated that
more than 825 of the aircraft are in the air at any one time, with one
taking off every 6 seconds.
. The British Airways Concorde is now 22 years old and flies 3 hours per day
on average. The Boeing B747 flies an average of 13/14 hours per day,
therefore, BA looks upon the Concorde as being equivalent to a 3 year old
B747.
. Air Canada defended its title as top team in the transportation division
of this year's Vancouver Sun Run held in April. Times of Air Canada's
top 10 runners was also good enough for a top eight finish among 900
corporate teams in the event. Air Canada had 59 employees on its team.

July 1st 1999 marks the end of the duty free shops at airports in the
European Community countries. The fear of lost jobs and the expectation of
an increase in landing fees to cover the lost revenue is upper most within
the various airport authorities.
Normal commission fee of GBP3.00 to exchange travellers cheques or money
at London Heathrow can be reduced to GBP1.00 at Thomas Cook or the
International Currency Exchange PLC in Terminal 1 only, on production of
your Airline ID.
Commission fee for exchanging travellers cheques at Vancouver Airport
can be avoided if using the same bank as your Visa or Master Charge card.

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle yesterday when
an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic
navigation and communication equipment. Due to the clouds and haze
the pilot could not determine his position or course to steer to
the airport. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled,
drew a handwritten sign and held it in the helicopter's window.
The sign said "WHERE AM I ?" in large letters.
People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft,
drew a large sign and held it in a building window. Their sign said,
"YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER.' The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his
map and determine the course to steer to SEATAC
(Seattle/Tacoma) airport and landed safely.
After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how
the "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their
position. The pilot responded, "I knew that had to be the
MICROSOFT building because they gave me a technically correct
but completely useless answer".
