. We recently welcomed Joe Lee, and he sends us his bio -

I started on the ramp in Sudbury on Feb 02, 1961 with good old T.C.A.
and retired at the early age of 55 on Feb 01, 1990, as a Station Agent
11.  Many stories can no doubt be told that occured during that 29
Years.  Going to camp this morning to do some fishing and golfing, isn"t
retirement wonderful.  Imagine getting paid to fish and golf.
Will talk later, have a great day.

. Bill Norberg has put fingers to keyboard again -
It has been a while since I sent you an oldie so here goes:-
It was around late 1959 or early 1960. I was on a flight from the old
terminal at Dorval to Winnipeg with my boss at the time, Jim McLean. We took
the 1:30 PM flight from Dorval via Toronto which  in those days utilized a
Super Connstellation. It was the top flight from the East to the West and a
very popular flight. We were seated in the First Class section and were
looking forward to a normal comfortable flight.
The flight to Toronto was routine and after the normal stopover were soon
on our way west. About an hour after leaving Toronto the Captain made an
announcement that was to change our plans considerably.
He said they had an overheat warning light on # 3 generator and would have
to return to Toronto. He said he would be in contact with Toronto and would
advise of the plan to deal with this problem. A while later he said that we
would be arriving at  Gate 6 at 5:30 PM and would be re-departing from Gate 8
in a Viscount aircraft at 6:00 PM to continue our flight west.
True to his words that is exactly what happened, at least initially. We
deplaned and were routed to gate 8 where we boarded the Viscount and
departed at the appointed time. We took off in a normal manner but I sensed
the aircraft was not behaving properly. As it was now dark outside I
pressed my face against the window to try and see what was happening. I saw
that the wing flaps were not retracted and said to Jim that we had a
problem for sure. A few minutes later the Captain came on the PA to
say..."We have a small problem, the ground crew failed to close an access
panel and we cannot continue the flight. To make matters worse this
particular Viscount does not have fuel dumping capabilities so we will have
to fly around a while to use fuel and lighten the aircraft for landing. He
then went on to say that they would use the time to serve the dinner."
Later he came on again to say that we would be landing at Gate 8 at
8:00 PM and be re-departing at Gate 6 at 8:30 in a Super Constellation
aircraft.
True to his word that is exactly what happened. When we landed the second
time we were sure that we would lose a number of passengers but that was
not the case. A couple did leave but the majority continued the flight to
Winnipeg and West.
After take off We noted one of the passengers sitting opposite us,
obviously a Britisher, who had taken advantage of a bottle of Scotch he had
stashed in his briefcase. By the time we were airborne the third time he was
getting quite sloshed...but quite happy.
There was a neighbour of Jim's on the flight and we were getting quite
embarrased at the whole process being from the Technical Division of the
airline. Jim also had a bottle of Scotch in his briefcase but as an
employee would not be involved in using it in flight. Jim quite politely
stated this situation to his neighbour and then said..."If I was to give
you the bottle of Scotch would you offer us a drink?" The gentleman was
quite ready to oblige and rang the bell for the flight attendant to provide
glasses and ice. The flight proceeded without further disruption to our
destination. It had taken three aircraft and 11 elapsed hours to make the
normal 6 hour flight.
As it is now and always has been, if passengers are properly advised of
problems and we deliver what we say, they usually are very cooperative
under such difficult circumstances.
