.     We are sad to report that Bill Ripley, 1st Vice President of the
Pionairs Executive Board (National Executive) passed away peacefully
at 5:30 AM, 29 July 1998.
Bill has been in declining health for the past few months and we
extend our condolences to his wife, Beverly and family.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will take place on
Tuesday, August 4th at 11:00  AM. at St.Judes Anglican Church in Oakville,
Ontario.
Bill was a great friend; a great Pionair and just fun to be with.
We shall miss him.

It was interesting to see names of some of the really first Pionairs in
NetLetter 287; Lindy Rood, Herb Seagram, the Leigh brothers, etc. etc.
If anyone is visiting beautiful downtown Sidney here on Vancouver Island (note
the proper spelling of Sidney, not like that other place on Cape Breton, eg. -
kidding) you might run into Dick Leigh who was once mayor of the town. My most
oddball experience with Dick was in the late 50s at Dorval. We (P&S) had moved
from hanger 2 mentioned by Peter Kralka, to the ex Rolls Royce building
located on the road near the railway tracks between the roads leading to the
Trans At and Domestic Terminals.  Our boss, Les McDowell was away and I was
acting for him, and Dick's boss, Bill Samson, was also away and Dick was
acting for him.  Dick phoned to say the company had hired an American named
"Smokey" to check out fire preparedness and he wanted to visit Stores - but I
wasn't to warn anybody.  We met in the parking lot where Smokey proceeded to
put a harmless smoke bomb in a pail then he put it in Flammable Stores and set
it off. The Lead and another were there watching and much to Smokey's chagrin
on one either tried to put out the smoking pail or to sound the alarm.  When
challenged, the Lead's response was that if the bosses were watching it must
be OK.  Next Smokey was to demonstrate how the fire doors would work in the
event of a fire.  He tugged and tugged on one trying to close it, but someone
called out that because the doors sometimes tended to roll out of their
housings and carts or forklifts would nick them, the guys had propped them
open.
I don't recall how Smokey rated Maintenance, but needless to say money was
found to train P&S people and upgrade the facilities.  And of course, I wasn't
very popular for not warning of Smokey's visit so we could be prepared and not
look foolish.

. Frank Houghton who recently joined our mailing list sends his bio -
There isn't much I can tell you about my "time" with the airline.
I spent all my time at Toronto  airport in the "Sales" Dept. starting by
working the checkin counter weighing baggage etc.
Over the years I worked in several areas such as ticket counter, gates,
terminal control. All my service was spent at yyz airport, and over the
years I had many "on the job" experiences dealing with the rich and famous
that went through the airport. My only experience I have had travelling west
was spending 8 hrs at YWG after being bumpted off a flight trying to return
home. In addition to landing in Abbottsford and the drive by bus to YVR due
to fog. Over the years there has been several of my fellow workers, that
transfered to YVR, but I have lost touch with a lot of them. One name that
comes to my mind was that of a Frank Koerner, who went west many years
ago.  There isn't much more that I can think of now, but I appreciate your
news letter, as we used to call "Beside Ourselves" at the Toronto airport.

July 19 1998 - BRITAIN - MICROLIGHT MAN CIRCLES GLOBE

AN AMATEUR pilot's microlight spluttered through its final leg to Britain
last night after a record-breaking 117-day flight  round the world, writes
Chris Dignan.
Brian Milton, 55, landed in Orkney last night to become the first pilot to
circle the globe in a microlight.
He is expected to fly into England today to complete his journey at
Brooklands in Surrey, the airfield where he took off in March.
Milton, a financial journalist and father of two from Bethnal Green, London,
failed in his bid to emulate the feat of the  fictional Phileas Fogg in
circumnavigating the world in 80 days, but will still enter the record books
for his open  cockpit, single-engine navigation of the world. The previous
record of 175 days was set by four United States army fliers  in 1924.
Just a few minutes after landing alone in Orkney, he said: "I am very tired,
but I am not dead although I came close. I was very nervous flying the 500
miles from the Faroe Islands to Orkney because the engine coughed five or six
times and there was only sea below me."
This was one of several frightening moments during his adventure.
"When I was flying across the Baring Sea to Alaska, I just  iced up and
could quite easily have died. I knew I was fighting for my life and had to
stay in the air," he said.

. Sheila Moscoe recently joined our growing list of readers, and sends this -

I'm a Customer Sales and Service Agent at Pearson Airport (Toronto).
I took the retirement phase-in program November 1, 1997. So, I work
part-time now.  I'm in my 30th year now.

Anyhow, just to let you know, that we are starting a T2 Coffee Klatch
for airport sales retirees.  It will be at the Golden Griddle, Airway
Centre, 5559 Airport Road..phone (905)677-0560. The restaurant is right
across the road from the airport terminals. Lots of free parking; easy
access, too.
Our first get-together will be Tuesday, September 8 at 1100 hr.
So, we would like to see our airport retirees from Toronto airport sales.
Then, we will meet on the FIRST Tuesday of each month.
Because we have limited space at the Golden Griddle...25 would "fit"
comfortably...we would like to invite only those s> retirees from Terminal
II Sales (i.e. customer sales/svc  agents; supervisors) for the start.
Then, let see what happens before we open it up to all depts.
