. We recently welcomed Gilles Bolduc to our listing, introduced by
Vladimir Slivitzky -
I was recently speaking with Gilles Bolduc, formerly
Passenger Sales Manager, Montreal. He is "alive and well" and operating a
moving company in Montreal, called Intraglobe. We had lost track of each
other since our respective retirements 8-10 years ago, but a couple of
years ago, when I needed to bring some stuff back from France to Montreal,
I checked the yellow pages and one of the companies I called was Intraglobe.
A very pleasant receptionist answered that the Boss was out and would call
me back.  A few hours later a man with a familiar sounding voice called me
from Intraglobe and asked if I was related to the Slivitzky who used to work
for AC.  That was Gilles. He had taken over my job as PSM in 1973.
What a coincidence in a big city!

. News from the Districts.
The Vancouver Island District held their annual picnic on July 29th, and
your Chief pilot ends us this information -
The Vancouver Island annual picnic held July 29th on Mt Doug and it was
pretty much routine.
Syd Napolitano's "Sea Gull' hat that he bought in Peggy's Cove, NS was
a hit.
There were 53 Pionairs and guests in attendance, a record breaking event!
Donna Coutts from Pionairs Toronto District was our visitor.
Stan and Eve Cornock, Saville Hambleton, Bill Singer,
Christine (Agnew) Crozier, Bill and Sally Fisher, John Innes and wife,
Frank Takasaki, Norm Stoddart, Leo Goulet and his wife, Arlene and
Cecil McCulloch, Nancy Walchuck and her husband to name a very few.
I left in the middle of the baseball game where every player that came up
to bat never made it to 1st base! And I think it was a one-base game.
No homers, that's for sure. Errors? Yes too many to count.<G>
Leo Goulet had to be called in from the field as he was out there playing
on the wrong side. And as soon as he came in, the inning was over.

. Found on the internet.

BACK TO THE FUTURE:
The FAA says that one of its most critical mainframe computers, used in the
nation's largest ATC centers, WILL function properly in Y2K.  However, while
programmers hired by the FAA say the system will work, IBM -- the computer's
manufacturer -- continues to say it can't be sure, and wants the system
replaced.
Perhaps they had a nice, new, expensive IBM mainframe in mind?

BIN HOGS GET DIET MENU:
Travelers who cram a year's supply of goods into a weekender bag the size of
a Volvo are going to be seeing a change in attitude among airlines, courtesy
of the FAA.  The feds are providing the airlines with written instructions on
what baggage is acceptable and what is not.
This is good news for airlines, which have been grappling for guidance and
trying not to offend paying customers.
Now they can blame it on the FAA.

HOOP DREAMS DOWN UNDER:
Pilots flying aircraft into the Northern Australian region of Torres Strait
may soon be doing so at their own risk.  Insurers are reportedly threatening
to withdraw coverage on aircraft because windsocks at the remote strips may
wrongly indicate a no wind condition.  Turns out the islanders are
throwing coconuts into the windsocks for basketball practice.

If you are leaving a province in Canada, you should be aware that your
provincial medical coverage may not pay all health care costs.
Health services provided outside Canada often cost more than the amount
paid by the Ministry of Health for your province, sometimes as
substantiaL difference. For example - for BC residents, emergency
inpatient hospital care will not eceed ca$75.00 a day. The average cost
for a hospital stay in the U.S. often exceeds us$1,000.00 per day and can
reach us$10,000.00 per day for intensive care. Recently, a friend from
Quebec suffered a severly broken ankle while in Scotland, and the bill
for the treatment in Scotland for the 2 nights and 2-1/2 days was 2,450.00
pounds. (ca$6,076.00) - Before you leave the province, best get additional
health insurance to supplement your basic coverage.

We still have some great deals on cruises!

. Smilies.
John Gallagher sends these for us -

On a Southwest flight once that was delayed at the gate after everyone
boarded. The flight attendant said over the intercom, "We're sorry for the
delay. The machine that normally rips the handles off your luggage is
broken, so we're having to do it by hand.
We should be finished and on our way shortly."

"Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but
they'll try to have them fixed before we arrive.
Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than
Southwest Airlines."
