. We recently welcomed Michelle Molloy to our readers, and she sends this -

I just want to clarify a few things for you.
I see your welcome but unfortunately I am not a former Air Canada employee.
I have received the last two news letters sent out and gave them to my
stepfather who worked for Air Canada for 27 1/2 years.  Currently he is in a
nursing home and has been diagnosed with Alztimers.  It is good for him to
hear familiar names as it appears he only remembers things up to the early
80's.  He worked at Pearson T.2 in Baggage.
His Name is George Leslie Frankland.
His fondly remembers his days at Air Canada and enjoyed the last news letters
he read.
Welcome to George Leslie Frankland who can be reached through

. Your Chief pilot, Vesta, sends this information regarding a trip made
by a friend of hers  -
HOW TO GET ON-LINE USING A LAPTOP, IN SCOTLAND.
told by Kathleen Brookfield to Vesta. Kate lives in Guelph, Ont
When I arrived in Scotland, I phoned British Telecom, to get my laptop set up
for messaging. The instructions for the modem warn very specifically about
the danger of using the modem on a digital line; it can only be used on an
analog line.
The user is advised to check with the telephone facilitator if not sure.
As I had no idea of the difference, in spite of enquiries before I left about
these terms, I checked with BT and was told that the line was definitely
digital. Panic, panic. Here I was with a new laptop bought especially for our
travelling and it was no good!
I proceeded to phone technical help for Hitachi. The California number for
International help could be dialled but they couldn't hear me.
I ended up phoning our mutual friend Bill in Burlington, ONT and he e-mailed
to Chris Kenward (sysop of Fonix ISP in UK), who, in turn phoned me. And
Chris told me BT were wrong and that all phone lines were digital and of
course I could use the modem. I had also been trying to use a converter
switch from 110 to 240 volts. Chris went to Hitachi web site while he was
talking to me and checked out the specifications for my model. He confirmed
that the laptop is autodetect and it changes to the right voltage without me
doing anything.
I was amazed at this advanced technology.
So after flying across the Atlantic I could go to bed happy in the knowledge
that all I needed to get was a small adapter that converts the larger BT jack
to the smaller US telephone/modem jack!
If anybody is thinking of taking a laptop to Scotland, get your UK to US
modem/telephone connector (jack) before you go.
(Then we can send you your copy of the NetLetter! - eds)

. Found on the internet.

FOREVER ROLLS.
A Rolls-Royce aircraft engine has set a new world record by completing
31,000 hours on the wing of a Boeing 757 that has been in service for
7 years. The RB211-535E4 powering an Icelandair B757 twinjet has broken
the record previously held by a CFM International CFM56-3 engine by over
600 hours and is still flying.

PILOT HOLDS PASSENGERS "HOSTAGE"
The Brits have built quite a reputation on their "stiff upper lip."
Captain Brian Bliss' reputation may have been made by his quest for the
truth...in a rather unusual way.  Bliss is a pilot on British Airways'
low-cost airline, Go.  After someone was accused of smoking in the
toilet, the captain made all 148 passengers stay in their seats in Milan
for 40 minutes to give the unholy perpetrator a chance to `fess up
Italian police boarded the flight and detained Bliss for holding
passengers against their will.  A Go spokeswoman says the company stands
behind Bliss in not being willing to "compromise passenger safety."

AIRCRAFT ORDERS

Russian carrier Aeroflot (SU) has signed a contract for 20 Ilyushin-
96 jet aircraft equipped with US-made engines and electrical equipment.
Arkia Israeli Airlines has placed an order for two Boeing 757-300s
with options for a further two aircraft, and has also signed a contract
with ATR for three new-generation ATR 72-500.
British Airways affiliate CityFlyer Express signed an order for two
Avro RJ100 regional jet aircraft from British Aerospace.
British low cost carrier EasyJet has ordered 15 Boeing 737-700s from Boeing,
with options for 15 more.
SAS (SK) has increased an order for Boeing 737-600 to 55 units by
converting 13 options to firm orders.
United Airlines (UA) has placed an order with Airbus for 22 A320
family aircraft, bringing the total of Airbus aircraft on order or in
service with the carrier to 133.  They will replace older
Boeing 737s and 727s that the carrier is retiring.
Leasing company Bouilloun Aviation Services has placed an order with Boeing
for 30 737-700s and took a further 30 options for the aircraft type.
Airbus is said to be in final negotiations with express shipment
delivery company United Parcel Service (UPS) for an order of about
30 A300-600 aircraft.

. Anyone help out?
We're planning on going to Galveston Island, Texas in November.
Do you think any of your readers have been there, and if so could they
recommend a nice hotel on the beach? Otherwise, we'll do the old point and
hope routine with the brochures. With the way the money is right now we
have to be a little more frugal and won't be at the "Hilton" too ften!
Thanks!   Ed & Cheryl Scarth, Winnipeg <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
