. One more from Bill Norberg -
Subject: Lockheed 14's and Parachute flares.
When TCA started operations in the late 1930's initially with Lockheed
10A's and later 14's the system of airports and airway facilities across
the country was fairly limited.
As an aid to the flight crews in event they had to make a forced landing or
land at a relatively unequipped airport the aircraft were equipped with two
parachute flares. These were fuelled by magnesium which burns with an
intense white light after ignition. The flares were located on either side
of the front cargo compartment directly ahead of the cockpit area. These
could be jettisoned by the flight crew when and if needed.
When the aircraft were to be hangared for major maintenance work, the
flares were removed to prevent inadvertent deployment as they could be a
serious fire hazard. These flares were not of course removed when the
aircraft were hangared for short periods or overnight.
I forget the exact date but it was probably in the 1943-1944 period when an
exciting event took place in hangar # 1 at the Winnipeg Base.
An aircraft was in the hangar close to the rear (or north) wall of the
hangar when for reasons unknown, to me at least, one flare was discharged
onto the hangar floor beneath the aircraft. It immediately burst into flames
and started to burn with an intense heat. It was also giving off a great
deal of smoke and in a relatively short while the complete hangar was
filled with smoke down to within about 3 feet of the floor.
The fire alarms went off of course and I left the Instrument shop where I
was working in accordance with the fire  plan. Upon entering the hangar all
I could see was a very bright light in a pall of smoke and the legs of many
people running around in a frenzy. As luck would have it the tow bar was
still attached to the aircraft and an individual after opening the hangar
doors to clear the smoke towed the aircraft out of harms way.
The burning flare was eventually extinguished using sand from the many fire
buckets placed around the hangar. Before being extinguished it managed to
burn a hole in the concrete floor about 15 inches in diameter and about
1 1/2 inches deep.

. Recently Alan Rust who operates the web site for ACRA in Vancouver
visited Victoria on Vancouver Island, here are his comments -
Subject: Leo is in Victoria
Hello everyone,
I just thought I'd provide all of you with some information I picked up
on a recent trip to Victoria, B.C.
We decided to check out the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit which is in Victoria
until February 28/99 (it opened on Oct 1/98). The crowds weren't as bad as
we had thought, it took us less than 10 minutes to purchase our tickets
which were only $8 each. We were there on a Wednesday, so I imagine it
would be a lot busier on a weekend. I was amazed at what this man
accomplished in his lifetime and I'm sure you will be too.

"Leonardo da Vinci: Scientist, Inventor, Artist. This International
exhibition of the works of Leonardo da Vinci makes its only Canadian and
North American west coast stop at the Royal British Columbia Museum. A
total of 230 drawings, paintings and models, plus multimedia units with
8,000 pictures and a wealth of information will represent the Renaissance
genius."

Although the WWW site was slow when I visited it, you may have better luck,
try:  http://rbcm1.rbcm.gov.bc.ca/leoexhibit/index_leo.html

We also saw a very good IMAX movie called "The Magic of Flight" which I'm
sure you would enjoy.

Where to stay:
There are many good B&B's in Victoria, you can look at:
http://victoriabc.com/page2.htm
or
http://www.vacationsbc.com/bedbreak.html
for some ideas.

We stayed at Scholefield House ( http://scholefieldhouse.com ) a Victorian
style B&B that I would highly recommend. A five course gourmet champagne
breakfast is included and sherry is available in the library in the
evening. Note: you should be a cat lover.

I even managed to negotiate a discount for ACRA/Pionair members! For full
details on the discounts offered see our own "Discount" area at:
http://www.acra.ca/travel.asp (password is required) or you can go directly
there at: http://www.acra.ca/member/discounts/nam/canada/bc_d.htm
A link to a map is even available to view or print!

We welcome any members to submit recommended hotels, etc. that they have
stayed in (especially those with discounts). I will publish it in our
"Travel" or Discount area on the WWW.

. Found on the internet.

EARLY CHRISTMAS CHEER?
The airlines are hoping that your days will be merry and bright and all your
luggage light this holiday season.
The push to cut the size of carry-ons has led to one problem, though.
DOT figures show airlines mishandled more bags during March through August
than they did before the carry-on crackdown.  Apparently, the emphasis
on checked baggage is overstressing the baggage handling system.  What a
surprise...

CLOTHES CALL OVER OHIO:
One airline has the right idea:
when those pesky bags get in the way, jettison them.  Pilots of a US Airways
DC-9 returned to TOL after feeling some strange vibrations.  Apparently the
cargo bay door was not properly closed and the dainty underthings of all
aboard were strewn across the runway at TOL.  How did that grease spot
get on your shirt?

. Smilie.

AT&T apparently has a pilot on staff with a wry sense of humor.  We were
amused recently to learn that the procedure for reporting problems with
AT&T's cellular telephone service is to call 1-800-888-7600.

And a couple from 'The Sky's the Limit', Nov 1970 'Between Ourselves' -

Porno for pilots?
A BEA captain recently noted his radar wasn't giving him high-quality
signals. He asked maintenance to have a look at it. The inspection tag
read 'Captain reports dirty pictures on radar.'

Push button warfare!
A new French airline recently installed this system -
You push a button and out comes your seat belt.
You push a button on your seat belt and out comes a pillow.
You push a button on your pillow and out comes your hostess.
You push a button on your hostess and out comes your teeth.
