. With the approach of the 50th anniversary in Nassau, George McKillop
shares these memories -

Inaugural flight December 3rd 1948. Recollections of one of the first
maintenance representatives almost fifty years later.
The Station Managers (old titles) were John Gilmore, Nassau ; Bob Cowan,
Kingston and Arn Penner, Port of Spain. The sales rep was Pat Labrie,
formerly a Major in the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, who
subsequently retired from the Company as Vice President, US Region
The maintenace reps were Emmet White, Nassau; Jim Breckenridge, Kingston
and George McKillop, Kingston and Nassau. Jim, a Licensed Mechanic at that
time, accompanied the flight from Kingston to Port of Spain and supervised
the servicing of the aircraft on the overnight layover.
Some of the pilots, Lindy Rood, Gil McLaren, Jack Jones, Steve Abulet,
Roger Smith and Bob Bowker, of "Bowkers Airline" fame.
Some of the flight attendants were Gordy Kay, Dorothy Gilmore and
Mel Latour.
C D Howe, Minister of Transport was in Nassau over Christmas. One of his
colleagues had to return to Toronto accompanied by a Medical Attendant.
This required four seats on a North Star aircraft. If Mr Howe's immediate
reaction was any indication I'm sure our president Gordon MacGregor got an
earful of his opinion of Company regulations.
An engine change in Nassau in late December was the first time a Merlin was
transported in a North Star. This was prior to the development of
the "walking beam".
( A mechanical device developed within the Company to assist in the
unloading an engine without damaging the aircraft.) Moreover there was no
goose-neck crane available at the airport and the difficulty encountered in
unloading the Merlin is not among my fondest memories of Little old Nassau.
Cargo custom requirements for Kingston required multiple copies of all
documents and when asked when the aircraft would be ready for departure,
Keith Lindo of the ground handling company replied "when the weight of the
paper equals that of the aircraft".
Arn Penner's family was due to arrive from Toronto and upon boarding the
aircraft one day Jim noticed a woman with an infant, when he asked if she
was Mrs Penner she replied "no I'm Mrs Spooner".

. Found on the internet.

A PAX BLACK LIST:
Airline passengers who act like horses' backsides might find themselves
hoofing it under a new passenger blacklist system.
The plan to ban bad passengers was prodded along after a British
Airtours flight attendant was hit over the head and slashed with a broken
vodka bottle by a man who got mad at the stewardess because she was being
"aggressive."
Several airlines are now working on a known offenders registry.

Singapore Airlines is to join the Star Alliance in 1999, according to
Lufthansa chief executive Juergen Weber. Lufthansa and Singapore
Airlines signed an agreement on a strategic alliance in November
1997, a move usually considered as the first step in joining the Star
Alliance.

Israeli carrier El Al is to offer the first in-flight money changing
service. The airline's Fly & Change service allows passengers to
buy up to USD 500 worth of the local currency of their destination.
Available first on flights between Tel Aviv and London, Frankfurt,
Paris and Zurich, the service is set to cover the entire El Al network
within a few months.

. News from Toronto - supplied by Brian Dunn.
British Airways retired their first 747-136 G-AWNA this recently and
one side of the aircraft will be painted in the original BOAC livery to
mark the occasion.  The aircraft logged some 51 million miiles, 21,000
flights, and 102,000 hours.  The last flight operated from Philadelphia
to London and the aircraft was then ferried to a paint shop in Cardiff
Wales.

Air Nova and Air Alliance jointly announced their intention to
consolidate both operations into one airline, early in 1999.  The
consolidated DHC-8 service and the BAe146 jets will operate under the
Air Nova banner, while the remaining Beech 1900D services will continue
to operated under the Air Alliance name.

. Smilie.
John Hayes sends us these -

After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the Flight
Attendant came on with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please
remain in your seats until Captain Crash and the Crew have
brought the aircraft to a screeching halt up against the
gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning
bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick
your way through the wreckage to the terminal.

Part of a Flight Attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd
like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the
next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through
the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think
of us here at US Airways."
