. News from the Districts.
Subject: Halifax Pionairs
Hi: The following from Charlie Stock:
Due to the closing of Armdale Yacht Club for the month of January,
there will be no January meeting, the next meeting will be the first
Wednesday in February, the 3rd.
Also a very successful Christmas Party was held at the Armdale Yacht,
their were about 70 in attendance, down slightly from last year.
Olie Moore attended the party, he was enroute home from Sydney, where a
new Pionairs group was formed. Mitch
Subject: Montreal District Pionairs.
131 Montreal Pionairs and guests held their Christmas dinner Dec.3rd
& elected Pam Rosholt to succeed Herb Guilfoyle as regional director
for 2 years.
Sam Gatelaro, has donated one of his painting for the last six or seven
years (I'm the one that has to pry the painting from him, he's easy)
and the lucky winner Mrs Sheila Reynard. Sheila's husband Russ has been a
long time worker for the Montreal Pionairs.
We got $501.00 from the 131 that attended our dinner, I figured it about
$3.80 per head, who said that Air Canada people are cheap.
Apart from Dreams take Flight. The Montreal District's, original adopted
charity is still, The West Island Volunteer Bureau. A part from the 501
dollars that was donated, to this add approximately 90 Christmas wrapped
gifts for seniors.
FYI I recently had a call from our new Director Pam Rosholt, asking me to
go and help sell some Dreams take Flight, clothing tee shirts, etc.,
this took place Dec 11th at the Dorval Maintenance Base cafeteria.

Bob Carson and his wife Esther recently attended the Dorval C&SS retirees
monthly 'Bored meeting', these are his comments -
We went out to lunch today at Chenoy's (that is where they serve Smoked
Meat remember that) with the group from C&SS.
They meet every first Thursday and I do attend when in town. I'll give
you a little nostalgia there was a good turnout today - Kal Kalonowski,
Gilbert Gibson, Gord Henkle, Eric Lalonde (who is my neighbour),
Bonnie Alexander, Mavis & Lois Morrison and Monica & Bob Belding.
Andy McCready and Ed Mason usually attend but were not there today.

TCA Alumni -
The Alumni was >very nice and wonderful to see old friends again. A
very small turn out this year only 43.
We know there are are a few people not well enough to travel also the
Canadian dollar is for the pitts but we sure need some support.
We hope this is not the last year.
The new president Mary Emmerson is going to send out a letter with some
suggestions and hope all the members will answer.

Meanwhile, SOC staff through out the room are busy carrying on with
their routine tasks. Overseeing cargo is Ross Leighton, who is doing
calculations for ferrying two 6,500 kg engines to London. There
are a whole range of items, from horses to radioactive material,
that moves by plane. Recently, Air Canada shipped 27,000 kg of
Toblerone chocolate from Zurich. Across the way at another cubicle,
Erwin Wagner, in the load and balance section, is calculating
how a plane in Phoenix should be loaded. Each plane needs to be
balanced like a teeter totter, without too much weight forward or
aft, he says. Thus each piece of luggage and cargo is loaded on a
pallet that is assigned a place in the hold and the instructions are
then sent to the ground crew in Phoenix. The level of detail on the
screen is impressive, including a note that there's a "live puppy"
on board. Next, Mr. Wagner has to calculate the amount of fuel to
load in the plane's various tanks. The key is to have enough fuel,
but not too much because any surplus is extra weight that has to be
carried and reduces fuel efficiency. Another factor in the fuel
calculation is the weather and headwinds the plane can expect to
encounter en route. Over at another panel of computers, Larry
Babcock calls up North American weather patterns on his screens
and feeds the information to route planners. These same computers
can also show real time air traffic, and with a point and click of
his computer mouse, he can pinpoint and identify any plane larger
than a Cessna aloft anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, over in
operations control, SOC officials are re jigging a London departure
to give the delayed Delhi plane time to make a connection. As well,
the weather is worsening in Thunder Bay, making it increasingly
dicey to send a DC-9 into the storm. To remedy the dilemma, Drew
Tapson types a series of commands into the various keyboards
before him to replace a DC-9 designated for the route with a larger
Airbus A319. But the Montreal-Toronto jet, which is due to leave
within two hours, is still doubtful because of its technical
problems. Suddenly, Doug Platt in maintenance control hangs up the
phone and announces the plane is available. Its problem, a clogged
lavatory, has been fixed. Mr. Bredt doesn't crack a smile, but
continues to survey the room. "These are one of the few guys in the
airline who I'm happy to see sitting back with their feet up on the
desk because when they're hammering on their keyboards that means
we've got some problems," he says.

On May 1st 1942 a 12 passenger Lockheed 14H-2 landed at Torbay airport at
St.John's, Newfoundland to establish the first commercial air link between
