Hi
I received a few Mails from past colleagues who noticed my name in your
informative news letter. They were all replied. I guess some were intrigued
to know why we retired in Paris !! Guess my CV will explain, in part, why.
My working life has been dedicated to aviation, starting at 15 as an
apprentice metal fitter in an aircraft factory, in Paris, during the War 41/44.
I joined Air France in 45 as an aicraft mechanic and lived the pioneer years
of the reconstruction of the airline; In 48, I was based to London Eng until
52; I was the youngest outbase mechanic at 22.
Emigrated to Canada in June 52 , and 3 days later started as a junior
mechanic at Dorval. More pioneer years : you knew when you started your
shift but never when you would finish; great leaders and a strong " esprit
de corps"
My career path with TCA/Air Canada might surprise some, it is unusual in our
aviation world.

Unusual career path indeed and I owe this and much more to TCA/Air Canada,
and all those who created the airline, across the spectrum of our company.
And Canada, a great country.
My memories rest vivid: good & rough times. You don't keep taking chances
without paying at times some penalty. But it was worth it.
Why Paris for our retirement? Certainly not for the value of the Canadian
dollar !!! For the weather, to avoid the long winters.
And as we arrived in Paris in 86, I was asked to introduce the enRoute Card
in France and surroundings countries as Sales Mgr.
A new challenge rewarded by The President's Award.
It's in 92, at the age of 66 that I realized an ambition of mine, 5 years at
the Sorbonne University as a free auditor to study the "History of Art".
And now, Computers...
Jacques Gras,, ex Airport Manager at CDG now has the complete list of French
retirees. Dinners are organized and those interested can join in.

. News from the districts.
From the Air Canada Pionairs - USA newsletter -
Changing of the guard - the current executive concludes its term upon
adjounment of their meeting at the AGM in Vancouver on April 26th.
Art Thrun, formerly Sales Representative Chicago and Sales Manager -
St. Louis has agreed to be a candidate for Director Pionairs -
USA replacing Ian MacMurray.
The Fall Meeting for 1999 is planned for October, so keep the first
two week-ends of October free until thje actual dates are known.
From the Toronto Pionairs newsletter -
The last social event was the luncheon held at the Old Mill on
December 6th, and was a great success with a total of 184 pionair and
friends turning up. Len Callaghan, GM Airports - North America for Air
Canada was guest speaker and provided an update on Terminal II.
Del Dickenson, the 'Yorkshire Lad' played background music before lunch and
a comedy routine as well. Roy McCormack, of the National Pionair Executive
gave an update on the upcoming 1999 AGM in Vancouver. Several TCA/Air
Canada' groups' were in attendance, some pilots and spouses, also members of
the 'T2' organised by Sue Moscoe, a group of widows and single ladies
organised bu Sue Schreiner, and the Burlock coffee group was represented.
From Out of town were Sil and Kay Napolitano from Victoria.
A cheque for $1000 was presented to the Dreams Take Flight organisation
from the Toronto District Pionairs.
News and Notes from the semi-annual Directors meeting held Nov 19th in YVR.
Leo Goulet provided a brief summary of the Air Canada Pension Trust Fund
mid-year 1998, net assets showed $4,949m.
Doug Lovat gave an update on the Voluntary Supplementary Health Plan, and
advised that Mutual may want an increase in administration fees which may
result in Air Canada looking for a change of insurance company, however,
claims will still be handled the same way as at present.
Fraser Muir advised that the memorabilia project is progressing extremely
well and requested all Pionairs to give any items to the project. The
display will be available for viewing at the Pionair AGM at YVR in April.

Burlock Coffee meetings are now held at Tucker's Market Place restaurant
in Burlington for the Oakville/Burlington and vicinity Pionairs.

Air Canada Pionairs single ladies meetings are held each month by
Sue Schreiner who lives in Etobicoke. If you would like more information

Scarborough Coffee Group.
John Mumedjian is trying to form a Pionairs coffee group in the eastern
section of Toronto to cover Markham, Willowdale, Scarborough and the
surrounding areas. If you are interested in joining a once a month coffee

Scientists at NASA had developed a gun whose purpose is to launch
dead chickens at extreme velocities. No, this isn't the result of
over-competitive engineers at the annual Goddard Chicken Toss
(though that would be a perfectly understandable consequence.) The
gun is used to shoot dead chickens at the windshields of airline
jets, military jets, and the space shuttle, (while they are parked,
that is) at that vehicle's maximum velocity it could be traveling
while in "bird space." As such, it simulates the frequent incidents
of collisions with airborne fowl, and therefore determine if the
windshields were designed strong enough.
British engineers, upon hearing of the gun, were eager to test the
gun out on the windshield of their new high speed trains. However,
upon firing the gun, the engineers watched in shock as the chicken
shattered the windshield, smashed through the control console,
snapped the engineer's chair backrest in two, and embedded itself
into the back of the cabin. (Luckily, the train was unmanned at the
time.)
Horrified, the engineers sent NASA the results of the experiment,
along with the design of the windshield, and asked the NASA
scientists for any suggestions.
NASA sent back a one-sentence response: "Thaw the chicken first."

Aviation humour -- definitions
Range = usually about 30 miles beyond the point where all fuel tanks
fill with air.
A & P rating = enables you to fly grocery supplies.
Aileron = a hinged control surface on the wing that scares the hell out
of airline passengers when it moves.
Airstrip = In-flight performance by exotic female flight attendant.
Airfoils = Swords used for dueling in flight. Often used to settle
disputes between crew members and passengers.
