. John Hayes sends this -
Subject: Second-hand cabin air-another voice
Re Vesta's concern (Netletter #346) over  recirculated cabin air, also
addressed by the British Sunday Times, is further echoed in a recent
letter by former Captain William Heller. Captain Heller between 1945 and
retirement flew the new DC-6 across the Pacific.
"We had," he says,  "the first pressurized airline equipment on the
Pacific and replaced our air supply constantly. It took 3 min, to free
the cabin of the air just breathed".
"Today's airlines brought on by the fuel crisis of some years ago, are
forced to economize. One way was to begin recirculating the compressed
air brought in from the outside ambient source and decrease fuel
consumption. Recirculation redistributes foul or germ-filled air that
already has been breathed. Passenger comfort can be improved greatly by
ending recirculation".
"To recover the cost", Captain Heller concludes, "let airlines curtail
or discontinue those ridiculous "frequent flier" programs except for
frequent fliers".                  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. Remember when?
From the November 14th 1975 issue of 'Horizons', loaned by Kitch Olson -
Deja vu?
The headline 'Carry-on baggage - A major airline problem' an article
by Dave Williams, Manager Airport Passenger Service tells us about
this problem and that 'All Canadian airlines have agreed to take a more
consistent approach in enforcing MOT regulations'
(24 years later this problem still seems to be with us! - eds)

and from the September 16th 1977 edition of the 'Horizons' -
'Instructions to Hostesses (May 1930)'
1) Warn passengers against throwing cigarettes and cigars out the window.
2) Keep the clock wound up in the passenger cabin.
3) Carry a railroad timetable in case the plane is grounded.
4) Keep an eye on passengers when they go to the toilet to be sure they
don't mistakenly go out the emergency exit.

. Found on the internet.
CONCORDE REACHES THE BIG 3-0:
The fastest passenger jet in the skies had something to celebrate recently
but the party may be short-lived.  On March 2, the pointy-nosed bird turned
30 after logging more than 900,000 flying hours, two-thirds of them above
the speed of sound.  The Concorde is caught in a U.S.-European Union dispute
over environmental controls and could be banned from the U.S.

IS IT MY IMAGINATION, OR IS IT A LITTLE BREEZY IN HERE?
A window in business class recently blew out of a South African Airways
Boeing 747-200 while the jumbo was between Johannesburg and Frankfurt.
The window let go at 11,000 feet and the crew dumped fuel before returning
for a safe landing at Johannesburg International Airport.  None of the 301
pax were injured, beyond maybe looking like they were having a really
bad hair day.

ELECTRA SCRAPES BY AT SHANNON:
A landing incident in early March involved a Lockheed L-188 Electra at
Ireland's Shannon Airport.  The Electra's crew was asked to expedite the
landing and forgot the gear. Three props contacted the runway.
With only one engine producing full power and the plane vibrating badly,
the crew managed a go-around and landed safely, this time gear-down.

. Smilie.
Pilot:  Montgomery County radio, could you give us the current weather
at College Station?
FSS:  Currently they're carrying a 500-foot broken ceiling, winds out of
the northeast at 10 to 15, visibility 8, and the altimeter 29.85.
Pilot:  Copy that.  Is that 500-foot ceiling due to clouds?
