. News from the districts.
From the Montreal Pionairs newsletter 'Sentinel' Spring 99

First Thursday each month - d'Air Canada - lunch
Les Amis Retraités Restaurant La Sirène
480 St. Martin Quest, Laval

May 27,     Spring Buffet Lunch St. Lawrence Yacht Club
June 18-19    Bus Tour - Grosse-Ile    Quebec City Region

Lunch at Casa Grecque - reported by Yvette Ste Marie
February 25th was a mild, pleasant day. Over 70 Pionairs gathered for a
friendly and noisy lunch.  Old friends greeted one another warmly and new
friends were soon included in the general conversation.  At times, the noise
level was deafening.  This was particularly noticeable after lunch when our
Director, Pam Rosholt, attempted to make a few comments.
Once the noise subsided, door prizes were drawn and two travel bags,
donated by Air Transat were won by Denise Germain and Herb Guilfoyle.
Gennie Steizkiewicz got an Auto Europe Worldwide Car Rental T-shirt,
donated by Vic Scalzo. (Incidentally this company offers 15% discount to
active and retired employees - call 1-800-223-5555).
Morris Emsley took home a cuddly handmade teddy bear, another generous
donation from Ena Zuurdeeg.
Pam mentioned that volunteers are needed to help "Dreams Take Flight"
fundraisers.  Anyone interested should advise her directly.  She reminded
the group about the Italian Luncheon on March 12 at the Lachine Curling Club.
She also handed out maps with directions for those who had not yet
registered, and a list provided by Bill Sim was passed around.
Replete with good food and lively conversation, members took their leave
reluctantly and all look forward to soon again seeing one another.

Planned Two Day Coach Trip to Grosse-Ile (Quebec City Region)
June 18 & 19 (Friday & Saturday)  $155.00 per person (two per room)
Michel Bériau, Committee member from Québec City, has put together a
terrific package for us and we hope many of you will be able to take
advantage of this trip to the Lower St. Lawrence.  The price includes bus
fare, all tours, the overnight stay at Motel-Hotel L'Oisellière in Montmagny,
and meals (except for lunch June 18th, lunch ranges from $7.00 to $13.00).
The bus will leave at 8.00 a.m. June 18th from Fairview Shopping Centre
(between Eaton and Reno Depot).
Program
Friday, June 18th: Our first stop will be Ricaneux Artisanal, where  we will
enjoy a wine-tasting tour with tasty treats.  Next we will travel to St.
Jean-Port-Joli.  After lunch at Café La Courteuse des Grèves, our group will
enjoy the Wood-Carving Festival.  We will listen to a guide give us a
historical perspective of a Church and Cemetery.  When we arrive and register
at Motel-Hotel L'Oisellière in Montmagny, we will be welcomed with a punch
- then there will be time to relax before dinner. However, some of us may
want to swim in the indoor or outdoor pool, or relax in the Sauna --
while others may like to use the Fitness Center.
Our leisurely dinner will be followed by a fun evening together.
Saturday, June 19th: After breakfast at the Motel-Hotel L'Oisellière, we
will leave for Bertheir-sur-Mer where we will take an excursion to Grosse-Ile.
On the island, guides will explain the interesting history of this area,
which dates back to 1832 when many ships came from Europe, especially Ireland,
under difficult circumstances and the tragic yet fascinating story, which
followed.  We will then meet at the Cafeteria, where we will enjoy a
leisurely lunch prepared by Le Manoir des Erables, before leaving at 3.00 pm.
for our return trip to Montreal.
Because the bus must be booked in advance, we will need your registration
and the full payment before May 15, 1999.  There are 55 places on the bus and
the reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis - so get
your registration in early!
If you would like to take advantage of this super tour, contact
Mr. Ben Vezina, before May 15, 1999. 514-697-1037

. Smilie.
Tom Martin spotted this article in the February 1999 issue of the
Airways magazine -
Airline pilots are reportedly being warned to avoid flying within 6 hours
of   taking Viagra according to an Associated Press story.  A US Air Force
physician has discovered that the "resurrection pill" can interfer with the
ability to distinguish between blue and green - the colours found in taxiway
lights and many cockpit displays.  An American Airlines spokesman  somewhat
boastfully told reporters that Viagra use was not an issue for airline pilots.
There is also an unconfirmed rumour that middle aged male pilots from South
American carriers VIASA and PANAGRA are joining to form a new airline -
VIAGRA   - whose slogan will be "We give the others stiff competition"
Cheers - Tom
